Title: WTF is wrong with Sapphire's 5850 fans ? (3 broken)
Post by: Transisto on June 30, 2011, 03:10:20 PM
They have a fan that stop spinning or is hard to spin, (1100rpm @ 100%)

Here I just notice the crap fan (on top) has no free space between the blades and the base.

more information would be nice:
were they run at 100%?  if not, what percent?
how long have you had these cards?
did you buy them new?
you have 3 broken fans out of 4 cards, or 3 broken fans out of 50 cards?

I ran them on "auto".
I've had these card since they came out to market ~3 months ago,,,
out of 12 card,

Fact is ; I posted a photo,
I have no idea how a fan can end up like this.

I'll try oiling them up but have little hope this will help,,,
at this rate I expect having to replace the fan on all card within a year.

I see way too much dirt. Oil + dirt is a very bad combination for a fan.

Are you running cards side by side without a gap? The fan will sometimes hit the card next to it in this configuration, which could easily lead to broken fan blades.

Who talked about broken fan blades ?

You see dirt ??? they are relatively dust free.  anyway, I was not going to oil the blades.

The only notable thing I don't understand yet is why is the fan stuck this close to the base.

I caught this fan not spinning, I touched it a bit and it went to 3000+ rpm.

I will be looking for an official sapphire responce. They'd be better to send replacement fan.

No, that's dirt not just dust.

Are you looking for an official sapphire response on the bitcoin forum? Good luck.

A sapphire reply , ? No I'm just thinking out loud since nobody's added anything related to the issue a hand.

Dirt , broken blade, How is this any relevant ?

Is this a race to bump post # ?

I've had this card running for ~2 month in a relatively dust free environment.

Here, same fan, different lightning, (has not been cleaned) https://i.imgur.com/Cqdh3.jpg

The problem is the plastic gets hot when you run these cards 24/7, add that to the centripetal motion of the plastic makes it want to move outwards. When it expands outward, the plastic hits parts of the gpu, break, and cools down.

Explain that genius,

Hint #1 : 2 mm of clearance.
Hint #2 : The blades DO NOT GET WARM !!!

Well then there just made out of shit materials that cant handle being spun at 3000RPM for 24 hours a day

I also have these cards, FML. Let us know how you go with sapphire. I'll be checking the clearance of the top and bottom half of the fan.

that fan looks wrong.

I tried to get a replacement fan from Sapphire and others too. There only answer so far was to f*ing RMA.

check out this thread for a shop that has them listed - I could not get them to send one to me, though. =(

http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=18111.0

your options:
- try to find a replacement fan from that shop or better from someone here on the forum
- zalman cooler (quite expensive imho)
- RMA (~3 weeks - you may get trouble because you unscrewed the fan)
- try to find a fan you can somehow fit in (80x15, 4pin, I found one from titan but did not use it)
- buy a bigger fan and sandwich it below your card (cut a hole in the bottom of your case if there is no room)
