Title: More Evidence Paypal (eBay) hates Bitcoin
Post by: mjc on July 01, 2013, 02:32:38 PM
I listed a 7970 GPU with a mounted Antec 920 water cooler on eBay with a buy it now for $500.  A buyer bought it and then paid for it through the automatic Invoice system.  The payment never showed up on my paypal account.  The buyer provided a transaction number.  I contacted paypal and they said the user sent the funds to the wrong email address.  They had left one letter out of the email address.  Paypal said the user would have to cancel the payment and resend it.  sounds reasonable.  The buyer has not been.

But wait, it was done through the automatic invoice system, the user doesn't enter the email address.

Now some how eBay has the item ad refunded by me, so I cannot file a non paying buyer complaint.  I'm stuck with a $54 fee for an item that essentially didn't sell.  I cannot leave negative or otherwise non positive feedback for the buyer, I cannot contact eBay.  I have a long standing (like 12+ years) account on eBay with a rating over 100.

I have never had so much trouble.  Ok why do I say they hate Bitcoin.  I mentioned I used the GPU for a month to mine Bitcoins.  One other auction I had listed was ended early because it referred to bitcoin mining.  Since when is it illegal to mine or talk about Bitcoin.  I'm not selling Bitcoins on eBay, I just mentioned tangentially something about Bitcoin.

I think it is time to rid myself of paypal and eBay.

Certainly serious if the problem was related to mentioning Bitcoin. But did eBay/Paypal stop the auction because of that? Or is this just some other problem with the buyer?

That said, I have also been running into more bad buyers lately, people who come in and bid on an item, then never pay up. What a pain!

You guys too... trust me stay away from eBay companies, paypal, kijiji. Something screwy is happening with them and Bitcoin right now.

There are too many stories circulating around about odd behaviour with ebay: buyers getting accounts revoked, listings being canceled, insane periods for listings to post which normally take only seconds, etc.

Just don't do it, start frequenting bitcoin friendly sites.

Ebay/Paypal is afraid.  That is a compliment to Bitcoin I would think.  Why would they fear it otherwise when they have so much control in their little corner of the market?

Sorry for your troubles by why mention Bitcoin.  Any Bitcoin miner is going to know which GPU are good for mining and anyone gamer just looking for a decent gaming GPU will hardly care.  You could always be discrete "does xxx MH/s" and leave it at that.

Not excusing ebay/PayPal incompetence just point out sometimes it is better to walk around the wall then trying to bash it down with your head. ;)

I have also had problems with eBay and Paypal when it comes to Bitcoin. They are so unhelpful about the matter!

I wouldnt be surprised if they stop anything Bitcoin related from being sold.

Maybe they are afraid of being linked to money laundering and do not want to be under the watchful eye of FINCEN?

I called paypal and talked to someone and they told me it was up to the buyer to make it good.

For gamers who are aware of the fact the GPUs in mining farms run 24/7/365 @ 99-100% load mentioning bitcoin mining may actually act as a deterrent.

Bingo. They see sites like Dwolla and even MtGox being pressured by governments. Paypal does not want to be associated with that. Just don't mention anything about it on your listing. Used is used.

You are being a drama llama. Ebay's customer service sucks consistently, period. The idea that you're being persecuted because you mentioned bitcoin is hilariously naive.

Some people are honest and will actually tell you the truth about the item they are selling.  If the odometer on a car you're buying has been rolled back, wouldn't you like to know?
