I highly recommend cryptopia. It is the exchange I use most of the time and they are well trusted. I mostly buy Bitcoin and DeepOnion coins.

Using Coinbase no doubt is "one" of the easiest way to buy bitcoin in US if you meant to buy it via fiat. Although you must understand and learn first their fees if it's reasonable to you. You can also sell bitcoin here but you are dealing with the company itself and not on the usual trading platfrom where you are trading with the trader itself.

For trading (we are talking about buy/sell bitcoin in US), you can try Bitstamp, Bitfinex, Gemini. These are large exchanges and operates for long time now although as usual there is downsides like fees, methods and Bitstamp & Bitfinex have a hacking history.

For the usual trades, you can try Poloniex, Bittrex, Crytopia, HitBTC.

Remember that best and safe exchanges will depend on your experience. You will get random responses here but the final view about that exchange will depend on you.

Is Coinbase the only one that can exchange fiat currency to coins? USD to bitcoin for example and Bitcoin to USD

Bittrex will be the best choice if you are looking for many altcoin and cryptopia also good choice but less altcoin ..
Poloniex  are good but i heard that there are some traders experience of less secured in their poloniex wallet..
If you wanted to look for other trading site you can check the coinmarketcap.com and choose what altcoin you wanted to trade and you will see the market of each coin with rankings..

I have been trading a lot on poloniex for the reason that they have margin trading which is rarely found in most exchanges. But without margin trading, I would not have used poloniex since it is a bit slow and support sucks there. Anyway, aside from Poloniex, I would go with hitbtc, bittrex or cryptopia as I like their interface and other impressive features not found in each other.

According to me coinbase is the top exchange. It is a secure online platform for buying, selling, storing and transferring, you can exchange digital currency into and out of your local currency.

Nobody mentioned YoBit which one I use. I think we need to choose an exchanger by those terms that it suggest and YoBit suits me the most with their fees. I usually pay 0% to withdraw fiat after cashing out and it is just great, but it is never the same, unfortunately, last two times I have paid 1%, which is also not so much actually.

0%-1% I was always paying 0.0001btc fee no matter what the amount. :/ Their support is terrible so if you have some problem, it might take a few days. I've been using them before but lately someone posted something about YoBit accusing them of "scam" which I think isn't true.

What's the best exchange for alt-coins tho? I've checked a few and found some coins on yobit that I couldn't find on some other ones, tho that was some time ago.

I would avoid bittrex at the moment. They're acting weird (freezing accounts, their verification isn't working, withdrawals not working).

The best exchange depends on where you are located. If in Europe try Bitstamp or Kraken (kraken has more alts). If in the US try Gemini, GDAX or Poloniex.

I have used them just 2 days ago to buy some coins. I have an account with basic verification and haven't need anything more for months, although I heard some users were forced to verify. I sent the coins to my wallet and it was almost instant, took less than 30 min, so IMO bittrex is working just fine. I have also been using poloniex that people often give negative reviews and it was just as smooth.

if you solely want to trade bitcoin and maybe ethereum and litecoin you could use gdax!
it is linked to coinbase which is a good entry point from FIAT currency to crypto,
you can then send bitcoin to other addresses WITHOUT FEES!

Bittrex also has a good reputation as an exchange for trading.

Keep in mind that no exchange is "safe" for holding cryptocurrency. Even reputable exchanges get hacked. That said, the safest exchanges for US residents are Coinbase/GDAX and Gemini. Bitflyer has also just launched in the US; they are the biggest Japanese exchange and appear to be obtaining licenses in every US state they operate in.

Altcoin exchanges are risky. Poloniex and Bittrex are the biggest exchanges, but they are now notorious for support backlogs, account/withdrawal disabling, etc. Binance and HitBTC seem to be the most popular alternatives for now, but you should be aware that as users flood these platforms, performance tends to significantly degrade.
