Title: warehouse or office space for setting up mining equipment
Post by: mxc0bbn on July 03, 2013, 11:03:13 PM
I've been thinking about moving my operation to a commercial space, but I'm not sure how to look for a place with enough juice.  I know I will need at least 140-150 amps for housing my expanded operation.  Plus enough juice to run cooling units...

Is this even possible or am I thinking about a dedicated data center?

Just wondering.

Open a gym where the bikes and treadmills are rigged up to generate electricity.  Charge a bunch of people to come power your rigs, and use water from the swimming pool to cool down your chips and customers.  ;)

Damn that'd be awesome.

But OP: You're thinking of a dedicated DC. I'll be offering hosting services soon with the cheapest electricity rates in the country.

Very innovative. We will have healthier population follow by a warm swimming pool!

Yes move to Iceland and setup your rigs in a geothermal power plant.

As a more serious suggestion, you might want to look at factory / light industry type commercial spaces. These will be more likely to have the power requirements you need, but ensure that they have single phase power that meets your requirements (ie. not just a lot of 3 phase). Plus, there will be plenty of space and you wont have complaints from anyone about a huge number of high speed fans running 24/7.

What you are looking for is modest and should be easy to find, especially in a commercially rented environment. Depending on where you look, finding even 1000sq ft with 400 amps isn't hard. Getting power in commercial environments is never hard, most warehouse spaces can easily house large test units (we used to have four 600VA test units in an area about 3500sq ft, granted my last company did utility grade solar inverters). Just my garage even has 100 amps, so 140-150 is nothing.

how much maintenance does a GPU or ASIC rig require?  Is it feasable to rent some warehouse space, set up some rigs, and leave them there for weeks/months on end?  I move around a lot but want to mine so renting office space seems like a good option.

I'd not be able to say as accurately as someone with several rigs or months more experience but..
So long as you had remote desktop access to your rigs, checked on them every once in awhile via that, and remote rebooted them time to time, it would seem possible. Granted, this requires that you have stable clocks/settings, which requires a deal of configuration. If the power flickers, or goes out for a few hours, you can set your rig to auto boot as soon as the power is restored.

So, it might be feasible, but I personally couldn't say for sure.

i'm looking to set up some rigs somewhere and do a lot of travelling.  would this really be feasible to do?
