Title: new real tangible physical bitcoin coin
Post by: RSantana on July 01, 2011, 06:42:34 AM
I've created a real tangible physical bitcoin.
Ok, so it has no real bitcoin value, but it's a cool novelty coin.

It's a high quality 18k gold plated brass coin, measuring 1.5" in diameter.

Each coin has a unique code on the back that allows you to track where the coin has been using our website.

Best of all... you can buy them with bitcoins! The price is very reasonable.
I'd appreciate some constructive feedback on the coin, website, and service.

I don't know why, jumped into this thread thinking this was going to be something shitty and cashing in on Bitcoin in a cheap way, but it honestly looks like a solid product and I want one lol

UK here but would like one.

I like the geocaching idea!

Vires in Numeris - In Numbers We Trust? That's great. Ah nope. Google syays "Strength in Numbers". Shame. I quite like "In SHA256 we trust"

very nice item, bought 2 of them.

You should make them like bitbills, and put a redemption code on them

It isn't really a bitcoin, just a brass coin with the logo stamped into it.

And it isn't really first if you count the limited edition resin coins that went around a while back.

But it is still really cool looking.  I ordered two.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I'll get these orders out ASAP.

To answer some of your questions:
Obverse/Reverse pictures: You've seen the Obverse, I will post a good picture of the reverse over the weekend. Below is a rendering of what the reverse looks like.

International shipping: I'm struggling how I can deal with international orders at the moment.

Bitbills: I agree making this coin like a bitbill would be cool. However manufacturing costs are a little too much for me to deal with right now.

What is the code on the back of the coin for: Each person who gets the coin can go to CoinedBits.com and enter their location and a message. This allows all those who had the coin the ability to see where the coin has been and what people think of it. OR... You can be creative and use the unique code for your own purposes.

Is this a real Bitcoin: Sorry for the confusion. I guess I shouldn't use the word "real". It has no real Bitcoin value. However, depending on how you use the unique code you might be able to have it represent real Bitcoins.

What is the point of these coins: To get these coins into circulation, and help spread the Bitcoin message to the world :-)

Just bought 3.

If you wanted it to be really cool, you would charge 1 bitcoin each coin and have an exchange in and out, with 100% reserve of digital bitcoins for all outstanding physical ones.  That would allow for easy transactions on the street.  This would allow for complete anonymity.  You would just have to be audited to insure that you hadn't given out more coins than bitcoins in your wallet.

It would be ironic that the "real" bitcoins are ephemeral bits on a computer, and the "paper" bitcoins would be physical metal.  A complete 180 from how money usually works!

As long as the value is low for a physical bitcoin, it wouldn't be worth counterfeiting, any more than counterfeiting quarters.  But if bitcoins go up to $100 each, then it would become very worth it.

Not sure how to counteract counterfeiting without multi-million dollar anti-counterfeiting technology like engraved holograms or something.

Another thing that may work is some kind of embedded EEPROM chip that contains an encryption key.  Maybe a wallet.dat file with just this one bitcoin in it.  Make it RFID and transfer the virtual bitcoin out of the wallet.dat when transferred, and make a new wallet.dat stocked with a bitcoin from your computer's wallet.dat before handing it out again.  In order for this to work, you would have to check the wallet.dat against the network before accepting, to insure there was a valid bitcoin inside.  Which would make it more cumbersome.

Maybe the gurus could come up with some scheme for such a scenerio.

Maybe it would be easier to just sell them as novelties :D

It's a very neat idea but please, pretty please, this is supposed to be a world-wide usable coin, not just in the US. This means we definitely can't use the Thai baht symbol.

I mean, seriously: do you imagine a bitcoin-coin with a "$" symbol on it? Do you imagine reading/writing "$4.5" meaning 4.5 bitcoins? Wouldn't that be confusing? Then you know why the ฿ sign doesn't work either.

We're seeking for a fair economy system, and we can't even start being fair choosing the very symbol of the currency. That's depressing.

The symbols are different. The Bitcoin symbol has two strokes, and they don't go through the middle of the B. No one who actually uses the Thai Baht symbol would be confused. Compare:

฿

Hey, tried to order one.  I had to switch computers to pay.  The website told me not to submit my address until I paid.  Somehow my browser flipped out and the buy screen went away.  How can I send you my payment ID and Address?

P.S.  It would be nice if there was a contact email on the website.

Fair enough. My criticism would rather stand against the use of the "฿" character, then. But keeping using the double-striked B as a symbol for Bitcoin will make people use the ฿ character by laziness. We'd be better off choosing a totally different symbol.

I'm sure that if someone had suggested using an S letter with a non-crossing bar for Bitcoin, everyone would have refused because it would look too much like the $ sign. Let's have some empathy and imagine for a moment that we live in Thailand and our everyday prices are written with a ฿ symbol. Seriously: wouldn't we prefer to just use a totally different sign for Bitcoin? The fact that Thai people are less present in the conversation at the moment shouldn't be an excuse for not taking them into consideration. Let's not be such assholes.

I just bought one and did as the site asked and didn't fill out my info and close the window until I sent payment.  However, I DID manage to do all that between sending and before 1st confirmation of sending.  Was that bad?  It's been a whopping five whole minutes and I didn't get an e-mail confirmation, so I'm starting to worry.  I want to make sure I get my coinbit because they look so neat and I really really wants one!

Cool coin! I like the "traditional" Bitcoin symbol (like on your coins) but I have to agree that this is a problem with the Baht symbol.
Here is a list of possible alternatives: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Bitcoin_symbol

I heard a lot about Ƀ. There is a site that even suggests specific colors to use.

Btw, is there really a difference between ฿ and the B with two strokes (like on the coin)? Because I've also seen $ with one stroke and two strokes attached. (Uncle Scrooge uses this, for example :-)).

You may want to consider making a more definitive statement on the Website that this is for 'novelty purposes only'. I can imagine that government interests (i.e. Sen. Charles Schumer) are just looking for some excuse to hang Bitcoin (and in this case, you) with a federal currency violation.

I have never seen the Baht with two bars.

And I don't think there will be a currency violation as these coins have no dollar denomination.

imagine your site is like instawallet.

the code on the coin could be used as an "view-only" mode for checking balance.
i am note sure about how to secure transactions (eg who "owns" the coin; handing one coin to somebody else without internet)...

and PLEASE offer shipping to europe soon. i want some!

if possible i would like to see "real" gold coins. maybe work together with them: http://midasbitcoin.blogspot.com/ (not sure if they are trustworthy, but i think i'll try)

very nice work!

If they are marketed as a "real" physical representation of a currency, then that is how the prosecution would treat them (if such action were pursued). The vendor's own verbage would be the prosecution's case.

Indeed, they effectively have serial numbers.

I am just saying that Bitcoin is clearly on the gubberments radar now, and 'Bitcoins' being posed as physical coinage is not going to help.

The two legalese keywords here are 'novelty' and 'entertainment'.

Just wanted to let everyone know that all orders that have been placed up til now have shipped!
Due to the holiday they won't actually go out until Tuesday.

That's what I was thinking... I had been investigating something similar and was quoted $12 per coin with a min quantity of 2500 to get them done at the Perth mint, so I would have to sell them for at least 1 btc each.

Looks like they're going for whatever $6 USD is in bitcoins.

As they are not limited edition, they should get cheaper (in BTC) as the BTC value goes up, thus, they're always worth $6 USD.

Also remember reading that it was ILLEGAL to mint your own currency. Not sure if that refers to counterfeiting US currency, or any currency, or if it includes "digital tokens". Not sure the fed's will care if they decide to bust you  ???

Oops, sorry about that. You can now order larger quantities and save on shipping. This is only available if using Paypal.

Also, Free shipping has ended. Shipping is now included in the price for Bitcoin and Dwolla payers. Paypal still has the price at $5.99 +shipping.

However, you must use paypal. We do NOT support orders outside the USA if paying via Bitcoin or Dwolla. Sorry for the inconvenience.

All orders placed by today will be shipped tomorrow (Tuesday the 5th).

I'm guessing this is due to the domestic shipping cost being "baked in" to the cost of the product when paying via Bitcoin or Dwolla. Is that right? Why not separate it out for international orders? Or just, y'know, separate it out all the way? Is it because you don't have a system that can handle different shipping rates on each order?

Sorry, it just seems funny that you don't accept bitcoins for international orders since that's probably where Bitcoin shines brightest.

Just got my 3 bitcoins in the mail today.

They look awesome!

Do you do laser engraving for the serial number?

Just curious, how did you design and come up with the molding for the coins for a reasonable price?  I thought striking a new coin was 10s of thousands of dollars or more.

Yes, they are laser etched serial numbers. I'm worried they may wear off. Time will tell.

I can't tell you my secrets  :-X. Manufacturing a new coin can be expensive. I've streamlined it a bit and cut out some of the costs.

I just ordered 3 of them to EUROPE. Hope they will ship soon!

Ironically, I had to buy them using PayPal, not Bitcoins. The price in Bitcoins was too expensive compared to current conversion rate between BTC and USD. Also, selecting 3 pieces was trivial in PayPal, but not in the Bitcoin payment window.

We definitely need simple and usable payment gate for Bitcoins!

These look so cool!  Well done :)

I think I might buy some to give away as bonuses on freebitcoins.org!

I do echo others' comments, though, about being careful with the wording on your site.  Other than one line on the FAQ page, you really make it sound like they are real bitcoins.

In addition to the FAQ, on the Buy page I do say this:
"These Bitcoin coins do not represent digital Bitcoins. They have no Bitcoin face value."

However, I'll do something to make it more clear.

Thanks.

I'm glad you ask this question. Yes I have considered it.

Who all would be interested in a one troy ounce .999 high quality silver round? If so how much over the silver spot price would you be willing to pay for it?

Also, the silver coin would not have the unique serial number on the back.

ASEs are going for about $5 over spot in small quantities.  You should be able to get away with a dollar or two more than that for novelty.

Although, one of my coins, the etching of the words 'VIRES IN NUMERIS' was so shallow, one side of the 'V' isn't even etched, etc. -- I'm keeping it though because it's a collector's item ;)

That coin must have slipped through quality control. I've visually checked a dozen or so coins and I can see some variation in the stamping depth. If you want to send it back I'll replace it for you. It does give some uniqueness to your coin though :-)

Could you give some more data about the site "coin history" interface? I couldn't see it on the website. I would be interested in being able to give someone a tangible bitcoin, then they key in the number at the website and see a matching bitcoin public address that I have entered. Preferably, I would also like to give a link that generates a block explorer page for that address showing the balance etc.

The public bitcoin address would come from a paper bitcoin wallet (http://paperbitcoinwallets.com) like those sold by Casascius. The private key would be handed over separately, either at the same time, or when the person reaches the age of 18 or whatever.

Since there is no guarantee that the balance will remain as shown, there is a strong incentive for a recipient to keep in the donor's good books. I'm thinking of a scenario like a rich relative and a teenage recipient, where the recipient is not likely to be jerked around on a whim.

Some intriguing ideas. Thanks. You could certainly implement your ideas on your own website using my coins.

Regarding the coin history. Here is a screenshot of what it looks like. Each person who obtains the coin has the opportunity to go to the website and enter a position on a map of where the coin is currently, and add a comment. The person then passes the coin on to someone else.

Isn't that the same as in the offline world?

What about a titanium coin? Its probably a lot harder to fabricate then silver or brass but i like the idea. "A indestructable coin for a indestructable currency". Also a bit cheaper then pure silver and alot more durable. Where silver bends and scratches fast, you could use a titanium coin as a keychain easily.

Edit: Almost forgot to mention, it looks great too :D!

I just noticed, that for international shipping of 4 coins Paypal says 29.96 USD (including shipping), whereas with Bitcoins that would be 2.8 BTC.
I really don't mind the price - it is still a great offer, but the 30% discount when paying with Paypal appears a bit strange to me.

Am I missing something here?

Very cool idea.  I'm too bitcoin broke to buy one right now (saving up my minimal btc for a Corsair case), but I could see getting one of these and placing it in a Geocache here in Lawrence, KS :)

Any ETA on when I'll receive my coins? I placed an order for 4 of them yesterday.

If you're in the U.S., it's pretty quick.  I received mine in less than 72 hours but I probably got lucky that I paid the same day that RSantana was doing a shipment.

Cheers,
Kermee

What about internation shipments(the netherlands)? Any estimates? I paid mine last wednesday.

Got mine today, so international shipping takes about a week(to the netherlands) :)! And i have to say, they really look great!

They should be cheaper to buy in BTC than with paypal to stimulate the market :).

I received mine today as well. They are AWESOME! I just ordered more :)
Thanks a lot RSantana!
The only thing I'm wondering now is would it be possible to insert an RFID chip into these coins when manufacturing and how much more would it cost?

To those who are wondering about delivery times:
I ordered from the first batch which got sent out last Tuesday. So it took 5 business days. It usually takes 7 to get parcels from USA to UK. The rest of the Europe should be the same

RFID would not work inside metal casing.

Yup, i tried to get the color as real as possible, but it's still a bit more yellow in reality.
Made the second photo with people in europe in mind, so they can see how it compares to the euro.

As a quick question.

Why does paying in BTC cost more then any other payment?
Using tradehill or mtgox, @ current price of 14.00$ and your price being 0.61 BTC.
($14.00x0.61BTC=$8.54)

Site says: "Base price per coin is (plus shipping) $5.99"
While Dwolla amount is at $7.99
and Paypal at $5.99

Can you provide some insight on how you are creating the BTC price?

Ok, now that you have cornered me. I hate to admit it, but the extra $.55 is simply there to compensate for the risk and volatility of BTC.

And keep in mind that the paypal price isn't including shipping.

Title: Re: new real tangible physical bitcoin coin
Post by: cinos11 on July 13, 2011, 03:16:22 AM
I would suggest removing the extra .55$ until a certain threshold exceeds.

Since as the price of 1 BTC in $'s becomes less, the amount to pay in BTC becomes higher.
So, you should kick in the .55$ once BTC hits around the 15$+ range, as that's when it becomes volatile again.

This can be easily done with a php script with an "if" statement.
if($pricebtc >= '15') {$volatile_protect = true;}

Anyways, i just bought a coin from your website right now :)

EDIT: Apparently my Bitcoin client screwed up and sent everything in my decimals.
I guess you got just a tip of .00119888

nice, have you considered making one in solid .999 silver?

I'm glad you ask this question. Yes I have considered it.

Who all would be interested in a one troy ounce .999 high quality silver round? If so how much over the silver spot price would you be willing to pay for it?

Also, the silver coin would not have the unique serial number on the back.

Me! Good idea.

I received the two I previously ordered. They're awesome! Really well done. Gave one to my dad. Thanks.

Well, the only way to pay is via mybitcoin's shopping-cart-interface.  There are two buttons you can press "pay with bitcoin" and "pay with mybitcoin".  If you select the former, it will just give you a bitcoin address that you can send coins to in the traditional way.  PM me if you have any issues.

I like the current version, I just got mine in yesterday, but I would also like to buy 1/2oz or 1oz silver coins.  $7 over spot sounds good.  As for design, I would prefer the old fashioned fiat look.
I like the simple look of the coin because it is similar to the signage used by commerce, but I like your idea for something like a bitbill to look more old fashioned.

Its interesting how people feel the need to make a picture of bitcoins, make medallions, or some other tangible representation of a bitcoin.  I don't think we need any picture or any representation of a what a bitcoin is.  It is digital, 0's and 1's.  What matters is that it each is unique, and that there is a way to trade them, whether on an exchange or person to person.

Its hard to leave the old way behind.  ;D

Reflections are sort of a tricky thing to photograph, you can either have a reflection, or you can have detail. It's nearly imposable to have both.

It actually serves a cool purpose, but I agree.  I'd buy one if it weren't for that.  Perhaps the coin creator should make a 2nd type of coin without the website branding on it and sell it for more?  That way he could lower the price on his existing coins (they'll be subsidized by the higher priced ones) or give them away for free to promote his site (1 per order of the new coins?).  A non-numbered coin would also be cheaper to have made, so there would be a much higher profit margin, especially considering he could charge a large premium.  Giving 1 of his website branded coins for free with the order of new coins would also get people like myself (and probably the 2 people I quoted) to give his website a try with their free coin.  I'd imagine that would be a great help to getting this project off the ground.

Ok, this is not a bad idea. I can understand not wanting my website on your coin. How about this... what if there was no unique code and the url was very small on the back, OR possibly laser-etched on the coin edge. so you wouldn't even see the url if you were looking directly at the front or back of the coin?

Also, would you want the design of the obverse & reverse on the coin to be the same?

I would have to guess that it's not quite that easy to just leave them off. Unless he is using an extreme lean process I'm sure they are created in bulk.

It wouldn't hurt If it was missing the website & number. I kind of want a more "classic" style btc coin with nothing proprietary on it.

I think you should offer both versions. I honestly don't know if I want the code or not.

Also you should maybe make a version with a whole at the top so you could make it a chain or something. I mean I wouldn't just carry around a coin to spread the word :P

Even if the website was in invisible ink, it would still be there.  That gives the coin less of a "currency" feel and more of a website promotion feel.  Right now you're the only person (I know of) offering cool cheap bitcoin collectors coins.  Take advantage.  Even if they're brass now, you are in a position to corner the market, which after some profiting could lead to silver coins, then gold...

I say you should design a new back and sell them for double the price of the ones on your website.  Then include one of your website coins for free with every purchase of 2 or more.  You'll make more money, your website coins will get to more people, and you could just end up being the exclusive physicial bitcoin supplier once you work out all the kinks in your operation and gather more customers...

I'd definitely buy one made of pure silver without the website listed.  Just sell the brass (gold plated) ones to gather the funding needed to get a batch of silver ones made (then discontinue the brass ones and only use that for your website coins, which you will then give away free with the silver ones).  I'm excited for you.  This is a great opportunity.  I'm just an ideas guy, but would love to partner on this with you somehow if you were interested in building a team for this project.

Or just go ahead and toss me a free coin when you get rich.   ;)

i totally agree with this premise.  i would also like to be able to purchase ones made of gold.

i was one of the earlier buyers of one of these and i love it.  but i just cancelled an order for 4 b/c i realize i really don't like the URL promotion.

make these in silver and gold w/o promoting and you'll make alot more in profit.

I'm sure I speak for RSantana when I say if I was in his position and someone wanted to send me several oz. of Gold coins, I would not feel comfortable handling them if issues arise.  We're talking about taking on the responsibility of several thousands of USD...

I'm sure it's not personal.

Just wanted to chime in and say I finally got mine in. Ordered July 7th, arrived today (15 days).  Toronto, Canada.  As was said many times in this thread, it looks much better in person!  Very happy with it.

Of course, I do not think anyone wants to see a man-peck shot a la MsBitcoin so no pictures.  Plenty in this thread to suffice :P

Will definitely purchase more in the future.

I don't know if it's been mentioned about costs, but I contacted a private mint, and they said for a custom silver coin, the minimum order amount is 500, and custom die making costs anywhere from $300-1200...

So to sell a custom silver coin, we would need at least 500 pre-orders, at the current spot price alone is almost $20,000...  So that might be why he hasn't released anything in silver yet.

 :P

Yes, you've hit some of the issues. However, I think I have a way to do silver. They would probably be half ounce coins. And I don't think I'd have to resort to pre-orders.

RE: to random other replies

ummm, a USB flash drive built in would be kinda heavy on your USB port lol.  You'd need like a little 6" extender cable and not one of those reinforced ones.  Damn cool idea for storing my GUIminer app though!

And umm, yeah solid silver would be pretty epic but gold plated stuff looks like gold so I like the gold plated brass idea.  I think pewter coins would be pretty old school and ironic but still cool though and I bet a hell of a lot cheaper.  I mean 90% tin and 10% copper is many times cheaper than copper or bronze.  I dunno what exact tin prices are but last I heard, it was something like "a dog wouldn't take a **** on those prices" :P

Btw I'm definitely feeling a big, gaudy, 3-5" version for clubbin and LAN parties...mostly LAN parties lol.  I currently have an ASUS board's non-functional 1" chipset fan as a LAN party necklace but that would be way cooler.  Ooh and a shirt that says "You only got a headshot because my GPU was mining" :D  ooh and a bumper sticker that says "my other car is a bitcoin mining rig" rofl.

Anyway, that coin is certainly the coolest bitcoin-buyable product I could find :D

Bah, silly forums don't like quotes around URLs.  Link fixed.

A coin dealer put it together for me from bulk parts, so there is some confusion about which parts are really involved.  I think it is a "H" sized ring holder with a black 38mm ring.  Except that the H sized holders on air-tites.com aren't the right size.

If you live near a decent coin store, you can ask them, or look for a retail package with a 38mm ring.

I think coinedbits might be looking to order some in bulk to offer for sale along with the coins, but you'd better wait for them to say it.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to notice that.  We found like 30 kits, all brand new and mostly unopened.  They were down in the coal room of a building we are tearing down.  Sadly, the demolition contract had already been signed, so a salvager got them instead of me.  I've been watching eBay.
