Title: Powering 2 S9s on 30A Socket
Post by: ICeZer0 on December 03, 2017, 01:10:57 AM
Hi guys,

I am just going to type out loud and would like to hear your thoughts on the matter..

I have 2 S9s each with their own APW3++. I have a 30A 3 prong washer line that is not being used. I want to connect the miners there since they have the largest amperage on my breaker box.

I wanted to buy a 30A Plug to (2)15A Cord Adapter Camper Y Electrical Split Adapter (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073WBD5NK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A33CMOVE6L77VZ&psc=1)

I am in the US so 110V (Also note that the house is newly wired).

  • 110V * 30A = 3300W max that I can provide to that Dryer outlet.
  • Splitting my 30A socket to 2(15A) means 1650W each plug
  • Each APW3++ can supply 1200W on 110V but can provide 1600W on 220V.
  • Each S9 puts out 1323W

So both S9 would requires 2646W in total which is less than a 80% load on my 30A dryer socket.

Question 1: If my PSU can only provide 1200W on 110V and my 13.4TH/s S9 requires 1323W will it not work or just under perform?

Question 2: Am I able to run both miners on the 30A washer socket?

Thank you for your time. I want to make sure I am doing this correct, please provide any feedback.

You will be fine.

Instead of the Y splitter, you can get a PDU for the same if not less cost and add 1 or 2 more S9's to it down the road. Plan ahead!

Exapmple below: I grabbed 2 of these for $25 each from another seller

Hi there,

I just wanted to double check, are you sure your dryer plug is wired for 110V. Most are wired up as a 220V circuit. If your not sure how to check, look at the panel, if it is a double breaker and takes up 2 panel spots.

I second the idea of setting up with a PDU, but would also suggest, maybe wiring in another circuit dedicates to mining, if your original circuit isn't 220V.

Also I would suggest getting a PSU that is rated to handle the load. This problem would also be solved by using a 220 V circuit for your mining. A lot of the problems I see on here are people coming to close to their PSU output and the Miners either not powering on or shutting down.

That PDU will actually be great, thanks for the tip.

And yes I do have the 30Amp connected to two panel spots, so I guess its 220V.. So I am in the clear!

Thanks a lot guys.

I am doing basically the same setup. I am running 2 new dedicated 30A lines to the basement and each will have a PDU at the end. This way I am ready to add miners in the near future. Working on a soundproof enclosure now that should fit 3 S9's and the PSU's inside, with ventilation out my basement window to remove the heat.

Have your electrician install L6-30 outlets, it's what your pdu will use.

I currently have a L shaped dryer socket. (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Certified-Appliance-90-1028-3-Wire-Dryer-Cord-10/24250617?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222227017874922&wl0=&wl1=s&wl2=c&wl3=40344209432&wl4=pla-78309141872&wl5=1013962&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=online&wl12=24250617&wl13=&veh=sem)

I need to find an adapter, or is it cheaper to have the socket replayed ?

Change the outlet. Will only cost you $15 or so and is very easy. MAKE SURE TO KILL THE POWER AT THE PANEL!
