Title: Best motherboard???
Post by: Coin-Girl 123 on December 03, 2017, 04:36:37 AM
Hi!

New to this all. Want to get this and run the "trio" set up. With 3 GPUs on the actual motherboard itself.

I just want to know if this motherboard can also run 6 GPUS, 3 on board and 3 off board with PCIe risers. Is this correct, can it run 6 GPUs at once like this?

I just want to verify before I purchase, as I plan to start with a trio and expand on the same board as time goes on.

Thanks so much everyone!!!! I would really appreciate the help, I just need to know asap  :)  :)

heres the motherboard

Lot's of people have problems with more on than 5 cards on Gigabyte boards. If you want a good motherboard with 3 x16 PCI-E slots that is known to be rock solid with 6+ GPU's, I would suggest the Asus Prime Z270-A or Z270-AR. It has 3 x16 PCI-E slots, 4 x1 slots and you can use the m.2 slots with a PCI-E adapter to get up to 9 cards. It was BBT's go to board for many of his builds and there are tons of videos on Youtube on how to set it up as well.

Can someone please help? Just need to confirm. thanks so much!!!

I have a friend who have the exact motherboard you are asking and he is running 6x RX 580 with modified bios making 180 Mhash in Ethereum only mining mode , running from a few months without problems and without crashing.

It should work for you too but I suggest to go for Biostar TB250 PRO BTC or ASROCK H110 PRO BTC+ or ASUS MINING EXPERT as these are motherboards dedicated to mining. Their price is not expensive too.

For  6 GPUs you can buy Asrock H81 Pro BTC more cheap.

I have the same suggestion as @Cereberus did, why don't you get those mining mobo, it supports more PCIe slots, and you do not require to use all, 6 gpu on it sure works without problem.

You can't use a GPU on Board. The slots are very close to each other. To mine coins you need to the minimum distance between the GPU was 10 cm You will still need to use risers. It seems to me that the use of expensive motherboards it is an unjustified waste of money.

I will surely recommend going with asus z270p or asus z270f motherboard
they have enough pcie slots so that you can go with expansion in future
dont place cards on the mob use risers for all gpus for a smooth mining operation

Thank you all again. I may do the gigabyte and just run it as a 5 gpu set up for the duration. But if I were to go with the ASRock H81, could someone recommend a budget CPU? As I always seem to get lost in the sea of CPUs that are available.

It would be greatly appreciated!  :)

Thank you all, everyone has been amazing!

you should check riserless builds as well

D1800 Onda and some other brands do 8 card mobos

thx!! CoinGirl

I suggest you go with the Giga byte or Asus mother board to have as GPU rig base. Most probably we can go with the board with the 13 cards connected option. That is what my research with the re-seller informed to me. We have to go with the best board in market. Mostly they have this option.
Initially starting with the 3 cards is the decent idea. You will be able to make more money as you added more cards to your rig so try to get the board on that basis.

Are you planning to put the 3 GPUs in a case? If you do, make sure the case has 8 expansion slots (so there's enough room for the third card) and that you have plenty of cooling for the cards, e.g. at least 6 case fans. If you're planning an open air rig, then risers are the way to go, no point in putting all cards directly to the mobo since they will be too close to each other. As a mobo I would suggest Asrock H110 Pro BTC+ ($129), it,s more modern and you can use skylake celeron CPU which costs just $40.

Don't tell it to me either.

 8-P

Yes, that motherboard WOULD work for a "3 card on the MB" rig - but plan to use something short in the end slot to allow the middle card to get tolerable cooling.
Most of the 3-card rigs I built were AMD based, but I did end up with one rig with the Gigabyte Z270-HD3 (which is a VERY close variant on that board).

If you are going to go riser, there are better choices (some of which are NOT as expensive as the quoted ASRock H110 Pro BTC) that will allow 6 or 7 cards per rig.

Thank you all so much

Also, will this RAM work with the ASUS???

Thanks!

Can someone please confirm these parts will work together. last question lol. And the ASUS Board listed can run the classic 3 card trio rig on board without risers, too correct?

Thanks so much all. I owe you all for the help!!

Yes, those will work together fine. And yes to the second question as well.

I'd be more inclined to go with the G3900 Skylake over anything Kaby Lake, due to better support across the board.
Pricing is VERY similar to the G3930, performance will be a tossup - and that link posted to Newegg's listing for the G3930 also has a G3900 option on the page you can click to for quick comparison.

For the price of that ASUS Prime motherboard, you can get the ASUS B250 Mining Expert that has 19 slots and built-in 3 power supply management - the ASUS Prime boards are all VERY overpriced for mining boards IMO.

Newegg themselves are out right this second https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813119028 other than a couple of overpriced "marketplace" sellers, but I suspect Amazon would have sellers with them in stock at a reasonable price for the board.
