Title: Will you still use bitcoin when it gets banned?
Post by: miztaziggy on July 01, 2011, 04:24:49 PM
Question in the post title...

Answer Yes/No

And I am asking because of a line in this article:
http://themonetaryfuture.blogspot.com/2011/04/legal-tender-illegal-tender-will.html

"However, pragmatically it is necessary to understand that the majority of people now do see the government as legitimate and, if Bitcoin was banned, would not use it out of a desire to be good upstanding citizens. The Bitcoin economy would lose 90% of its user base and the value of Bitcoin would crash. Therefore, Bitcoin needs to become a viable currency for legitimate business transactions."

yes
there is no way you can ever "ban" it completely, no way to filter the p2p traffic

yes ;D i doubt it can be banned; and even if it is banned somewhere i don't see how could they ban it worldwide.

Yes, in fact I can't wait till they ban it! That's when it will *really* start having value.

P.S. - you can do a 'poll' easily when you create a new post.

there is no single head to cut off. genius of non-hierarchical system is many heads like a hydra, cut one off more rise up in its place.

next thing is to have a holographic-based system, where each node contains the whole network in it.

I sincerely doubt any government cares enough to try to ban bitcoin.

True, and even if they did BTC would just go underground...

Any country banning cryptocurrency will be at a relative disadvantage in the future anyway...

I think it depends are how much teeth the ban has. I think the general users will continue to use it. After all, what will they do with their coins? Burn/deflate them? The extant mining pools, exchanges, and public services could be shut down. But this would not have the desired effect, it really would become a black market/laundering currency. Though many governments have the tendency to do just that - scare the legitimate users and legitimate the abusers.

Honestly, I think that BTC will always be legal as a collectible item or commodity even if there is a push to make it illegal as a currency.  (within the USA's legal framework at least).  So in that regard, yes.  I would continue to "collect" and "trade" it.

I don't suspect governments will ever accept BTC for taxes, but I don't see what legal standing they have to regulate private transactions surrounding a virtual collectible.

They cannot ban Bitcoins completely, but they could attempt to make their day to day use difficult (e.g. audit and supervise companies and any high value transactions). They cannot feasibly prohibit the use of BTCs, but once they ask for a bank receipt in order for you to be the new legal owner of property or other merchandise, it could become a bit nasty.

This being said... I plan to use and accept Bitcoins till I die - banned or not! ;)

I'm not so sure about that. Yeah, perhaps they don't litter in the park, but as soon as lots of money is involved, even "good upstanding citizens" start misbehaving.

At least half of the people I know would dodge taxation if they could get away with dodging taxation.  Even though they think of themselves as "good upstanding citizens".   Half of the people I know who can get away with dodging taxation do dodge taxation.

In less "developed" countries this number is much higher. People in South America for instance view government in a much more cynical light than in the US or Northern Europe.  In Brazil there is a saying, "that law didn't catch on".  I can so see that happening to a bitcoin ban.

I probably do a lot of of things the government "banned". If bitcoin still has good value if or when that time comes, then I'll continue to use it.

Not all laws are good laws.

And what about prohibition? All that did was make alcohol more readily available than ever.

I just don't see how a BTC ban would even work. The only legislation I could possibly see actually working is to make currency exchanges obtain some form of ID when opening an account. But this would be almost unenforceable if the country passing the legislation had no authority over the country the exchange was hosted in.

But, assuming bitcoins were made de facto illegal somehow, I would probably continue to use them, as long as people continued to accept them.

Even if people stop using them as money, they'll still be kind of fun to collect as a hobby, sort of like trying to get a new high score in your favourite game.

Certainly not, but purely base10/fractional mathematics can be put on the educational syllabus so that from an early age people have their brain 'trained' to think a certain way and make if harder for them to think outside the box.

But why lose base10 thinking? Because there is an alternative, that nature and the universe (multiverse?) uses... vortex-based mathematics. Ancient civilisations knew it well.

There are about 140 currencies in use in the world today, some issued by corrupt governments with no legitimacy at all. On what ground, would a government ban one ? because it is the most recent or because it is issued by the citizen of the world ?

the price would probably drop, so I'd stop mining as it wouldn't be profitable. though I would still accept the coins as payment because of the irreversibility.

They really ban the free will , can they ?
Banning it proves the worthiness of it , and then people might look for it more . So better for them not to ban, but i guess it will probably get banned .
And i won't stop using it , until my graphic card burns up.

Yes so that when bitcoin was banned you will no longer to used it in a country but since bitcoin was too many countries using it tgier is no possibility to make it banned. We can see the scenario that bitcoin has falls its price but nowadays it is on process of recovery so that nothing worried for. You can be able to used bitcoin anywhere even in any transactions.

Yes, I would gladly continue to use bitcoin.
Centralized exchanges would close in some countries and decentralized ones would become popular, but I'd be there accumulating ::)

Bitcoin already died like a billion time and it never stays dead, so basically BTFD on a higher time frame.

I do not  think what the article implies will happen though. You cannot just ban cryptocurrency.

Yes.  But there is no way to ban it completely.  It will become even more valuable if governments start to ban.  It’s much better for them to regulate it and get some tax money from it.

The government bans a lot of things. For example, in Venezuela it's illegal to buy US dollars on the street, but people have had a dollar black market for years. Same with drugs being illegal for decades, which hasn't stopped people from buying, selling and using. Sometimes things are banned until they become legal again, just as in many US states marijuana is now sold legally. So banning Bitcoin would not stop its use.

There's still some problem in my country.  Like Most of people don't know about bitcoin and even if they know they have to first spend their time to understand blockchain. Our government not ready to accept bitcoins this is same with banks they're also not agree to accept bitcoins. Yes its still exist and some people in my area are using it but  most of the people not accepting it .

Yes, I am impressed with the core philosophy of Bitcoin/blockchain and I am optimistic that we will have a good picture after 5 to 10 years from now. It is the unique innovation in the history of mankind that we are able to trust a group of unknown people from across the globe more than the familiar faces and that's very fascinating. I am not against earning from speculation activities but I feel that we should treat it as a payment system in the first place. That's what Bitcoin is all about in its core. I would definitely use it even if it is getting banned but I will try to fit my transactions in a legal system.

China has banned cryptocurrency trading but it has not worked. Google is banning cryptocurrency and ICO advertisement. But i can not think that cryptocurrency will be categorically banned worldwide. People have invested a large of money and they will keep using them.
