Patents are for the "good of the company" not society.

To me this says that the powers that be are starting to drool over the prospects of bitcoin/virtual currency.

Yes but be wary of patents. They are a way of saying "you can use our stuff only if you pay a license fee".

Not really what open-source bitcoin is based on is it?

I understand companies coming in will want to protect innovative ideas in the space, but they should not be able to patent "open money", or suddenly they will start claiming a fee for every bitcoin transaction done on a mobile.

so what exactly are they attempting to patent that has not been thought of already?

i am writing a MS thesis next year and noticed that someone at KTH, a uni in stockholm, had worked with this particular m commerce group at Ericsson and written her thesis on virtual currencies and coupons, with a case study of ericsson.

to me this just looks like patent trolling...

---Warning Spoilers Below---

"They also point out that the litigation was not unique to Micromax as Ericsson had recently filed a similar suit against South Korea's Samsung for failure to license 'standards-essential' patents. Executives close to Micromax claimed that Ericsson, which is no longer a player in the handset space after it exited its JV with Japan's Sony, was now trying to extort what they termed "irrational and inequitable licence fees"."
