Title: Any interest in a 20-port USB hub for K1 / Erupters?
Post by: Benny1985 on July 07, 2013, 03:57:23 AM
Would anyone be interested in such a USB hub? I just got one in from a supplier of mine. I still haven't fully vetted the machine with 20 ASICMiner USB Erupters running at once, but I'm rather confident it will handle it (the power supply is capable of 90w).

If this turns out to be a legitimate 20-port hub, would anyone be interested?

Price would probably be about $100 - $110 USD plus shipping.

I'd be interested to know if it worked with a Raspberry Pi.  Most USB 3.0 devices do not as far as I can tell.  So 2.0 would be a plus.  Orientation of the ports matters too.

Can we get some images of these?

Pictures please. Do you have a model number too? Brand? Cmon, details!

It is 2.0 - has 2 USB 2.0 outputs.

Will get some pictures of it soon. I'm still testing to confirm that it can run 20 Erupters at once. I've put upto 10 on it thus far without errors.

K16s won't need big hubs like current FPGA/ASICMiner Clusters due to the linking cable. 1 USB port per stack is all that will be needed.

I just bought that hub with the hope that I can put 20 asic miners on it.  I will let you guys know how it turns out.
(added later) >> I vetted it, it does not work with any more than 12 miners.

Yep. Very similar, if not the same model. I couldn't find a good stock picture of it.

For what its worth, my same model would be at least $10 cheaper than theirs, including US shipping.

Think you will need around 500mA per port to utilize them all with erupters or K1's.

cheers,

I realized today that with USB ASICminers being 1 BTC, the cost of Hubs is becoming significant. We are going to have to start taking into account the cost per port of a powered Hub. I'm not sure the biggest are the best. 10 7 port hubs plugged into a 10 port unpowered Hub may be cheaper than 7 10 port Hubs plugged into a 7 port Hub. ???

Hmm, why don't just use all things you have around in the house?
I have an Netbook lying around doing nothing = 3 ports
PC (24/7 on): 15 slots
PC (24/7 on): 7 slots

And if you use such things, you dont even need to spend 50$ on a Pi + 100$ on USB Hubs, you have to think economical, not what looks best.
If i'd had 20 Erupters, I'd jst use up all the USB ports I currently have, and not spend 100$ on hubs.. (It saves alot of ROI)

PCs running 24/7 kill any ROI

Low power usage is one of the big things with these.  If every computer is on kills lower power, and profit.

Some of us have one or more PCs running 24/7 in any case, mining or not ;)

I keep a list of the likely hubs here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=253749.0
Please add you finds if you have success with any hub, either it's listed there or not.
Garfield, I'll be adding a not, based of your experience.

you will regret that statement in winter.... when the device is loosing so much money, you cannot even offset the loss against its heating value.....

Send me one to test and review. I'll pay for it too btw.

Apparently poorly. Read Garfield's review in this thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=253749.msg2737581#msg2737581) pertaining a very similar 20-porter from Sipolar (http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a1z10.1.w4004-2539560000.14.FTpGzS&id=18952545349).

Can power 8-9 ports. Already reviewed by CanaryInTheMine in this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=253749.0

I got a batch on order from my supplier. I'll send you one as soon as its in. I have 5 on order at the moment, along with 10 of their 7-port hubs to test ($20/ea at retail, AFAIK with a 5v/3.5A power supply).

Having said that, the 12-port quote does worry me. I guess I'll find out soon enough. If there is a place for a 2nd power supply on the PCB, I may be able to request the factory modify it, if that's an option.

Still no pictures or details other than vague 20 port hub.
