Bitcoin is the father of cryptocurrency other cryptocurrencies are altcoin. In current market many altcoins are created in digital transaction. But all the altcoins are followed by Bitcoin. Some innovative things are designed in some altcoins but almost same in most of the altcoins. So altcoins is one of the cryptocurrency it will handle any place.

every altcoin has different purpose. example some altcoins are created to transaction or buy something in the other way maybe you hearded useless ethereum coin for nothing. some of them are scam. this is why to many altcoins.

No, some of them are copycats or otherwise dodgy coins.

However, all of the top ones are unique in at least some way - for example, Litecoin has faster block times; Monero has ring signatures for anonymity; IOTA has a DAG-based system; Ethereum has smart contracts, and more.

Whether or not they're different enough to warrant their price is another matter though.

All about competition, altcoin is very much and from some they have no value even their innovation is less desirable ..
without any altcoin maybe bitcoin value is not like nowadays.
About your question ''This type of virtual money is not just a bitcoin ,,
The similarity is both Cryptocurrency, aka equally digital currency .. Well of this similarity there is an element of difference, which is making the currency.

There are so many coins because every one is free to create one and moreover making coin, selling it through ICO can make you rich without doing anything.
The time had gone when each coin used to have something unique and caters specific purpose. Nowadays, most of the coins don't even have their own unique blockchain. They are either build on Ethereum, or Waves or NEM blockchain. In recent times, we started using the word 'token' for such coins. So in short, all tokens are shitty. Only go for coins which really have something unique to offer.

There are so many because it is a booming space right now and most are new ideas and so many people with the same idea are competing to be the one that becomes dominant. There is a lot of money in altcoins right now and so there are more and more new coins each day trying to get a slice of the pie so to speak.

some ico developers have ideas and concepts that they carry on crypto innovation. there are all sorts of white papers they offer and the technology they apply. but not everything has a future. you must be smart to choose and investigate every investment you will make.

Yeah every other coins has its own unique special purpose targeting different thing.  There are also platforms for tokens so it varies so much. You should choose carefully.

Yes theres uniqueness on some altcoins but most of them are just completely identical but still they did able to manage to have some values. After bitcoin all coins being created considered as alts. They do have different concept or features but still bitcoin is still on the edge and they are just still leaving behind but doesnt mean that altcoins are trash but they are also good for side income and some of them do really have usage on real life just take a look on ETH. It do have smart contracts which can possibly used for new innovation.

Title: Re: why so many altcoins?
Post by: SONG GEET on December 04, 2017, 05:30:13 PM
Almost all of them are just copy cat of bitcoin or other coins (>90%) and are scams without any real development.
5% or even more of altcoins are actually ETH based tokens that is not a true coin, they are sold by projects so they can collect funds for their operation.
Remaining 5% of the total coins are only worth to check as they have constant development + unique features than others.

Because that's how this world works if something is successful people quickly start replicating the basic idea and introduce new and innovative features. See fidget spinners there are millions of design available.

Same happened with btc in earlier years very few of them saw the potential and created similar coins to btc one being ltc and even doge. Then came eth completely different idea and something unique.

And like this many more started being added and soon in no time there was thousands of alts.

Because each project can now easier to obtain money through ICO, you simply need to release their tokens. That is why most of the tokens eventually will go into history with the collected money and we need to be careful

Only a handful of altcoins have new features or innovations. Most of the altcoins is plagiarized or modified. Be sure to shine your eyes.

Well i think the simplest answer to thid will be, as you know bitcoin was very successful and it's price id very high. It was the original cryptocurrency and also the modt popular cryptocurrency. After seeing bitcoin become so successful alot of new altcoins came out as people thought they would becomd as successful as bitcoin. Still only some of thr altcoins bring out something new. Most of them are just clones of others.

Before when bitcoin was launched there are too many ideas came out that has brought it during those early days. And as bitcoin is moving along its journey, developers are thinking of something new that bitcoin doesn't have. Most of them before wants to upgrade bitcoin and that's why they are creating their own coin that supposed to replace bitcoin but today it's different, they are creating altcoins for profit purposes only.

Crypto is at the beginning of its life and there are tons of ideas that can be brought into blockchain to make the process more transparent for users. This is the reason that most businesses are moving to blockchain and hence so many new alts are coming into existence.

Most of the Altkoks were created as a result of the ICO to implement some new ideas, a new project for the coins to work in some narrow field of our activity. There are a lot of projects, so there are a lot of coins created. Now they are more than a thousand. However, the market selects the necessary projects that people support with their investments, many of the projects immediately become unnecessary and useless. Such soon will be forgotten. However, in general, such a process is necessary, since it is democratic and only in this way can the altkoys be improved by going through selection in the financial market.

Yes. Services.
They target just one service and focus on that. Unlike bitcoin which will be used for merchants, assets, and most of all as a means of payment which is so broad.

Example is Cartaxi. They want their tokes to be used for their own application which is an Uber like car towing.
Another is Pundi X which is my signature now. You can see its benefits when you click it. It is about using the currency easier and faster and much broader that it can be used by everyone.

So pick those whom you think you can support much to make it worth the investment.

why are there so many coins to choose from, do they really each have something unique about them?

Each altcoyin has behind its project. There are the good projects that solve real problems and offer unique solutions, there are the similar projects and there are the bad projects that are useless or are developed teams don't keep their promises. In the absence of ICO regulation we have about 90% of bad projects and this is problem. The crypto-currency market is developing. Whether this ratio will remain, the future will show. I hope we will see more different and interesting projects (altcoyins).

Each of them has differnet things inside. Different features, working mechanism, roadmap, plans, teams, priorities and so forth. Some of them could be similar but their teams are differend and this made all of them unique ones. Variety in the market is good for traders.

In my opinion most of the Altcoins are launched by the search of profit of the developers, few coins have a good project. Some have just been released and even then they already suffer a dumping of the market making like that the currency is almost destroyed at the first moment. This is because the developers do not project the currency right and only aim for profit.
If you are investing in Altcoin, choose as currencies that are already strong, there is a market and already great stability without price, for example, Litecoin, Ethereum, Dash, Moneto and a new one to Waves

When companies understand about cryptocurrencies they started to make their own coin that is associated with their products, shares and services. And that's how the altcoin industry is becoming popular because of partnerships and also the crowdfunding has been popular too. Cryptocurrency now is totally like the stocks market where you can choose your own bet and just do trade alone with it.

Altcoins maybe from different ICOs and some are by the developer themselves.
From ICOs, they use them for their project as their capital, they are giving it value to be distributed to attain specific amount or profits. Sometimes, projects do not really reflect as they have promoted. They promise high profits to attract investors.
While from the devs, like forks, some create and agree to create alts for faster transactions and exchanges with lesser to no fees at all. Because as we can all experience, it's getting harder to mine and transact bitcoins everyday concerning the high fees needed to accelerated them.

And each currency has its own value . Nowadays as per my knowledge bitcoin is on top then altcoin and so on. This cryptocurrency gives really good profit if you invest in proper manner. I believe some altcoins are unique but there are still some, existing that has the same characteristic with another altcoin. And some of them are created to solve problems, help people through use of it, etc. Though more altcoins are created worthless today, and will just scam people to invest on it, there are still really worth to invest for. You just need to find the most valuable.

it is only hard at first mostly for newcomers to follow all the news from all the altcoins. but if you hang around for a while and watch the different altcoins, and their price movements, you can easily figure out what to look for and you will be able to do all the process in a much smaller time frame.

and in my opinion you have to make up your mind. choose what you are looking for. it can be profit or it can be innovation, they rarely happen together.

The answer is no, a lot of these altcoins don't bring anything new. The problem is that it makes it really hard to find new coins that really have to offer something new and also makes it hard of them to get attention. I personally just keep my mind on Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum and some other top coins because these coins I'm sure of will be able to change things.

Not totally unique because some of them are just clone from other project. They are just using different coins to promote their project but we don't know it is just the same in purpose. This is somewhat we called it a scam project.

This could give us some lessons that we should carefully read and understand all the details of every project before investing. And with that, we can escaped from bait of scam projects in which it only destroy the image of blockchain technology.

Good question!!!

When I started with Crypto, I too asked myself, what is the need of having so many coins. Then I understood that each of these coins have something unique in them. I mean the feature that it bring to the table, reason behind creating such coin, what's the vision and so on. Not to forget that we also have scam coins, where people would just create any coin, copy whitepaper and try to fool people and then run away with money. Got to be very careful with the new coins that come into the market for sure.

One other advantage of having a lot of Altcoins is that it helps in the diversification of investment.

That's all for now, Have a good one.

Most of the features offered by alts are banal; lending, esports, decentralized escrow and services..I've seen at least two ICO's having these concepts. While the devs might not totally be in it just for the money, one can't deny the fact that after some time, the coin would just be useless.

I remember this questioned being asked in 2014  :D
and most everyone here has answered it pretty good,
I can also add that some coin devs or token startups might feel like they can do a better job at promoting a coin that they brand and market and use to target specific users, developers might feel like they can write better code to support a blockchain,
I know this feeling firsthand cause I had a great idea and started a new coin in 2014, there are many many reason's for so many different coins.
Which one has turned out to be your favorite?
I truly believe all the altcoins have supported the growth of crypto currency so all these coins are a good thing.

Crypto market is decentralized and unregulated so anybody can create its coin/token and enter in this market without much hindrance. Unlike stocks, there is no regulatory authority so even scamers can create a fake coin with fake history and concept; collects crowd funding and then get vanish. So don't believe in any shit coin or ICO, do a deep research about its team before investing.

I completely agree with you, because in this way you can secure yourself from negative investments and the loss of your funds. It is necessary to do a very deep analysis of information about the selected projects, only then there will appear At least some certainty as a result.

There are so many because it is a free market and you can't tell somebody not to enter especially when something is open source. That being said no there is no way there are 1500+ cryptos and there are 1500 unique things about them all but they are trying to compete which is healthy for the industry. Consider every other coin beside bitcoin an alt coin,  every ICO that releases a coin or token are considered to be ALT coin. Though some coins are created to be a joke. Maybe high percentage of alt coins are not worth it or zero worth that why an ALT just a substitute for bitcoin and can never really surpass bitcoin bullish run. Too may ALT too few with really useful usage.

There are many altcoins out there right now, but you have to do your due diligence to see which ones are worth the time and money. IMO polymath is a big players especially witht he SEC crackdown lately. They help people launch security token projects and get connected to KYC-verified investors on their platform. All of the token projects launched are complaint, which I see will make waves int he crypto community. Also, the platform is idiot-proof, which makes it easier to businesses to get in on it.

You should even look at their demo: https://polymath.network/wizard/

The reason why there are so many altcoins is they want to make their project and themselves rich just look at the top 100 altcoin in coinmarketcap and their market capitalization that is a lot of money right? The devs dream for their project but the problem is there are some people only want for money by creating shitcoin currency and also, some scammers took this opportunity to create a ponzi schemes.

Not all altcoins are unique. Most of them are just shit coins or scam. There are some that are good quality altcoins. They really have something unique compare to the others and their developers are trustworthy and has good background. You should do your own research first before you invest on them. no ,not all coins are the same. every crypto coins that been made has a different name and unique statistics and usage that can be used online for buying ,selling, trading, mining, etc almost anything that you can think of and not all can develop it because it is not an easy thing to do and it also requires a good starting capital in order to create and develop your own coins and publicitize it through some advertising methods like social media campaigns and signature campaigns. the reason why there is so many altcoins is because they also want to compete in others and also to make a profit when someones invest on their coins but some are only doing it just to scam inoscent people.

why are there so many coins to choose from, do they really each have something unique about them?

Some of them are unique but a lot of new altcoins are just competing the old coins having the same idea  but they only differ on team, better roadmap and some technical improvements.

Almost all the altcoins that are being created now are all just like the ones being made months or even years ago, they are just competing now with more faster transactions and things they see or observed that are the weakness of the coin they are just innovating and naming it with another unique name.

Because the price of bitcoin is skyrocketing, therefore, so much developer coin that want to have much profit through create new altcoins and some altcoins getting scam because the developer take no responsibility from their altcoins that have been created.

But many of them (altcoin) don't have any use. They are only pump and dump altcoins.

You should choose carefully.

Mostly of  altcoin in the market now is ERC20 Token that premined which easy to create it and will be low cost by using smart contract of Ethereum and their blockchain. Many project create that token for utility token to development their project. And just some altcoin that have own blockchain without doing smart contract with other currency. So there are many altcoin now because easy to create it.

You should always check and research when investing in new coins.  Here is why regulating the new coins is very beneficial. I know that not everyone is excited on regulating crypto currency but I think regulating the new and upcoming coins just to filter out who would like to make a quick buck. I do not know how they are going to do regulation but i know they will think something in the future and many people want to be rich.

It's like hedging, many coins are created in order to match bitcoin's price with its useful platforms. But as you can see lately most of those coins are just nonsense and will have no value in the future, that is why the creation of coins are just a cycle, it will repeat as long as teams that created an altcoin leave it behind.

Each coin has something that should make it different, instant transaction, node reward, smart contracts, in the general there are great coins and several new projects coming with something in mind to improve others coins as well to compete.

With the success of bitcoins, numerous project owners are trying to expose their ideas through cryptocurrency platform where transactions are more transparent, but honestly it's just another easier way to get funds for their ideas, with less or little bit of malicious content as they are unregulated yet has their own fiat value. Cryptocurrencies are perfect to allow companies or just a bunch of people to go listing by having it's own altcoin. Ideas doesn't necessary have to be the same but the coin itself, like erc20 tokens are mostly represent the assets of their ecosystem, it doesn't necessary meant to be like bitcoin that based on transaction, they could be just some token to pay for their service.

Lots of altcoins are just shitty coins that were just made to be pumped and dumped and get their owners and developers richer . The only altcoin that is useful is the ethereum since they create tokens from it and thus it has a true utility . But people should invest in at least t coins to be sure of being safe even if bitcoin falls and cover their losses , and eventually profit of those coins if they grow in value.

Blockchain technology is free to use, edit, reuse and re distribute so developers and organizations that knows how to use and run it can make their own cyrptocurrency network so that's why there are so many cyrptocurrencies and ICOs today because at the moment there are not regulated in order to launch another flavor of a coin.

That's right. running a blockchain today is very easy because the source-code is open source and it's freely to download, edit, use and distribute.
Bitcoin core, Ethereum geth, LiteCoin and other platforms are free to access so that's why technically all these technology can be operated by anyone. Another thing, there's no regulation on launching this blockchain that's why there are thousands of coins are now available and people can choose which one is better than the others.

All people want to get profit at any legal cost so that's why there's a lot of investors today that are willing to pay more just to invest tokens and expect someday it will give them back good profits in return.
But some of the geeks and developers are turning into Blockchain because this will give them fast income and good money when they make their own cryptocurrency network so that's why there are too many coins today.

Each altcoin has a uniqueness. Usually they are made by a team called developers, altcoin is now arguably a valuable thing because of the ever-increasing price and improved public response to altcoin. Maybe we can call the dollar as bitcoin and yen, rupees, pounds sterling as altcoin. That is a normal number and we also recognize that the real currency in the world also often experiences movement. Nowadays a lot of popping up a project, I think this can be said as an ICO manufacture, it will try to continue to bring investors in order to run the development of altcoin. Meanwhile I think bitcoin already has a different path. Until now bitcoin is still appreciated and I think everyone is familiar with bitcoin.

Perhaps the reason why so much altcoin is due to the increasingly crowded crypto competition. each altcoin competes with each other to attract its enthusiasts by offering ease in transactions, security and high prices. If altcoin has it all it would be more and more interested enthusiasts. And there is only one altcoin at the moment that makes us all surprised by the rising price. altcoin is ethereum.

Even though they serve different purposes some just share the same agenda and that is to earn money. I often see these "the first" phrases whenever i see them on fb or on there own site. Although it takes time before they are completely released, not all of these altcoins were released on the market. Some may have been released but it is forgetting because it is not daily updated by their own devs.

In my personal information, a lot of altcoins are being launch or created because of its finest gratitude of earning profits via investing on them and so a lot of people want to create their own coins/ICO's to be one of them. For them they just need to have skills and knowledge to create a successful one. On the other hand, people who wants to earn extra profit invest in this ICO's, so its a win win to both of them.
