Because the dev of each token are very inovative they make way to get investor like bounty(signature campaign , social media campaign ,etc.) .. Some new token release or ico have also sale in there token  thats why many investor come  to invest to try there luck if it can make profit in that program and after they make a profit in that token they will leave it (I hate that because they ruin the crypto world after you've make some profit you jump in other token )

NXT will be hot in next three weeks. They announced an airdrop for all NXT holders. New coins IGNIS will be delivered to anyone who will get NXT on Dec 28

Waves and stratis are now hot atm's right now. I am just believing them.

Ethereum is the most growing alternative coin in 2017 and is still on his way to moon. Other coins like monero, dash and litecoin are rising too.

I'm watching the blackmoon crypto, they have a good team, they collected $30 000 000 in just three days. In January 2018 will be the launch of the first fund on their platform

Plus it will be rebranded soon! Working product with major real uses in the world. This was 20Cents only 2 days when now at 46 cents. Still a bargain and not hyped yet.

For me I would go for IOTA because of its appealing growth in the market and affordable price I think this coin has big potential in the field.

for sure not all alts are promising and hot as you have mentioned but some are and that because the decentrilised tecknology which is the future with p2p trading quality.

how long do I have do hold the NXT? Can I sell it at 29 of December or do I have to wait until the 1 of January?

Currently the hottest altcoin is Litecoin. It was started from $98 on the first december and jumped to $320.
Many people also admit if Litecoin is Bitcoin main rivalty.

I would prefer to choosing BCH and IOTA. Observer said BCH have target objective reach $2,387. However price was BCH/USD $1830 at current level at the market. But this BCH has become hot alt at market trading with volume reaching $1M for a week.
IOTA has been rally uptrend for 20 days going to the top. But in last 14-15 Dec, this coins fall drop, it has become negative on a breakdown and close below the critical support level of around $3.000.

There is never the best altcoin. Because this industry is constantly updated forward, there will always be new technology to join the blockchain, so we have to do is see the new direction of the industry.

in my opinion it's a difficult question and it's not possible to give you the right answer cause the market is so unpredictable.

i just know that almost every coin is a hot coin right now, because they are all going in one direction - !UP!  :)

Hot as in they are close to market cap ?

Deepcoin & Xspec.. (anonymous coins), personally I can't make out which of the two are better only that deepcoin is doing a lot of marketing and xspec seems to be focusing on development en tech
Casinocoin has been hot and will probably be hotter since they are changing to ripple network (dont forget to swap if you buy). Not sure of the real value here though..

It was 200 before but look at it now.. Dent is having a pump of the year more than what bitcoin did..

Postoken, will be hot soon :) the price now is so cheap. Try to research about POS, their lending platform and internal exchange soon will be awesome. You need to study first the altcoin you want to invest with in order not cry if you lose.

Cardano ADA is hot like crazy. I actually didn't buy it when it was very cheap because I never thought something like this. But it's almost to go into first 5 coins today. This is amazing for ADA holders.

Being luck is sometimes really the key of success, it seems.

Cardano or ADA at the moment has a lot of news coming in,thats why it pumps so hard right now and it is 80% up today.

There are many "hot alt coins" out there, however right now taking into the account the unstable price of Bitcoin I do not think it is a good idea to invest that much on alt coins as Bitcoin is going up and alt coins cannot follow

I would recommend the following coins ATM:

1. Litecoin: It has the potential to overtake Ethereum and Ripple and can become the #2 or #3 crypto.
2. Monero: As the authorities begin their crackdown of crypto, fully anonymous cryptos such as this one can become the preferred coin.
3. Bitcoin Cash: No need to explain. The user base is steadily increasing.

So far XVG and RDD, XDN, BAY, XMY, DOGE in bittrex are hot at the moment , then in Binance TRX is the one hot at the present time now I don't know in the other exchange right now like in hitbtc the only one I know which is hot was DENT.
