Today, the Bitcoin network has two, huge factors in its favor. First, Bitcoin's protocol has all the right features - and no fatal flaws - for a general-purpose cryptocurrency, including store-of-value, accounts settlement, point-to-point payment processing, and business accounting. Second, Bitcoin has the first-mover advantage - it was the first blockchain-based cryptocurrency. I think the only thing that Satoshi probably did not fully anticipate was just how fast Bitcoin would grow. I believe that the Bitcoin whitepaper will one day go down in history alongside other paradigm-busting developments like the Gutenberg printing press, the PC and ARPANet.
