Title: My bitcoins went to the wrong address!
Post by: Tardigrade on July 09, 2013, 12:24:55 AM
Here is the blockchain info: https://blockchain.info/tx/28ecafcdf6b75c45eab1cf9a902bd6d2661842fb4849133ece486004f927b4d1

Here is the transaction information from Bitcoin-Qt:
Quote
Status: 12 confirmations, broadcast through 10 nodes
Date: 7/8/2013 17:50
To: 1D3kVrgh71gCFaQerj2eZUboSPeQdwTUQH 1HhqczqixCqwo2jZyZELFUwEMKcjngphmV
Debit: -0.60 BTC
Transaction fee: -0.0005 BTC
Net amount: -0.6005 BTC
Transaction ID: 28ecafcdf6b75c45eab1cf9a902bd6d2661842fb4849133ece486004f927b4d1

I KNOW I sent it to the 1D3kVrgh71gCFaQerj2eZUboSPeQdwTUQH address. I've even taken a screenshot of the program that shows it going to the right address. WHY are there 2 addresses, and WHY does blockchain show my coins going to the wrong place?!

Thanks a lot for any help

Interesting.

What you've done is obvious to me...

You have LABELED the 1HhqczqixCqwo2jZyZELFUwEMKcjngphmV address with a STRING that says 1D3kVrgh71gCFaQerj2eZUboSPeQdwTUQH.

Normally, you'd expect that transaction window to say something like this:

To: My Friend Bob 1HhqczqixCqwo2jZyZELFUwEMKcjngphmV

But in your case, instead of labeling the address with "My Friend Bob", you've labelled it with another address.

...obviously, the label has no effect on where the coins get sent.

Sorry to say, you most definitely have sent the coins to 1HhqczqixCqwo2jZyZELFUwEMKcjngphmV.

I suggest you look this address up in your Address Book tab and re-edit the label you've put on it.

That seems to be the problem. I don't usually add labels...I must have pasted the address into the label section. How did that 1Hhq... address get generated though? And how do I get my coins back?

And how do I get my coins back?

Bitcoin is awesome because: No refunds.

You will need to find the owner of 1HhqczqixCqwo2jZyZELFUwEMKcjngphmV and ask him nicely to send them back, otherwise you're out of luck.

It turns out the 1Hhq... address had been sitting on my clipboard for quite some time. It is an address to another site I use. The money is there I'm sure, although Tor is moving quite slow right now so I can't check.

Thanks a lot for your guys' help, I was really worried.

Outgoing addresses aren't generated by you. You would have pasted it in at some point in the past, either by sending to that address previously, or by manually adding it to your address book.

At some point in the past, you must have got that address from somebody or some website.

Although...

There is also the possibility that you have some kind of trojan or virus in your system that replaces the text in your clipboard, with the attacker's bitcoin address. That's not just theory, someone actually did program something like that.

Glad to hear you found out who owns the address - That's the first step in getting your money back.

Yep, I got my money back, thanks to you. If you hadn't pointed out that I put the address in the label section, I'd still be frantically searching Google for bitcoins sent to the wrong address, haha

Qt should not allow bitcoin addresses as labels.

Qt should not allow bitcoin addresses as labels.

So they'd limit what you can have as a label? Sounds absurd to be honest, this was obviously a mistake on the OPs side.

I agree it should not be limited. Addresses are just text, people can use them for usernames, passwords, their first born's middle name (if not naming him bobby tables).

It could at least warn.

Qt should not allow bitcoin addresses as labels.

That would be a good idea and is maybe simple to add.

Its possible to validate that a string is a Bitcoin address, so having the program alert the user about the label being a address would be a good idea.

+1

We need more ways to prevent this. My friend lost .7 this way. It's just not right.

What if it was 700 btc?

The option to prevent this would be nice, but I wouldn't want to be forced not to use an address as a label.

Why would anyone use an address as a label? That doesn't make sense to me.
