These falls and rises are the reason regular people will never trust Bitcoin. Don't get me wrong I like Bitcoin, but until this volatility problem can be solved, Bitcoin isn't a currency.

The volatility is natural. Its extremely new and a very shallow market. As it matures it will stabilize, especially with a deeper market.

Exactly.

My exact thoughts. It never died. It just got really low. But it's okay because I think it's around $100/BTC now.

Am I wrong thinking the miners are what cause flux. For instance, say they mine 2000 btc and cash in all at once, then 2000 new btc just hit the street and its readly available. Then it gets pitched up and price climbs again.  I think the trick is going to be holding onto enough of them in the long run.

On a side note- The travel options, like ease of currency conversion, and security is AMAZING.  Say you fly to a btc friendlt place and buy something from a btc and local currency accepting vendor, you can get change from btc to that currency just like that bingo. Also your money can be in the cloud, leaving you with no value for a normal robber. Awesome.

I only have 1.74 BTC because I use Virwox and they limit how much you can deposit. I just signed up for another service so I will test it out. In my opinion I really believe bitcoin to be a sustainable long term currency. I'm sure the value will keep going up as demand will keep going up. I am eagerly looking forward to seeing the future of bitcoin.

In that case your bitcoins are going to be the least of your worries.

Remember that a rapidly rising price is not inherently good for bitcoin. In order for us to have a solid economy, we have to have a stable price that is attractive to buyers and sellers.

As a merchant that wishes to accept BTC for his goods, I want the price to at least be stable, and lower prices favor me. It may be good for your personal account if you have more BTC than fiat, but its not great for the economy and community at large.

Title: Re: Bitcoin is alive again
Post by: -Mk23- on August 03, 2013, 02:47:57 AM
Definitely agree with that.  It is risky accepting a currency that is somewhat troublesome to just convert at the drop of a dime, and also volatile, I was trying to get some coin and b4 I could line it up it fell from 111$ to 66$ lucky me. That was over maybe 2 days.  That's definitely enough to turn away sceptics or ppl in a tighter situation.

Title: Re: Bitcoin is alive again
Post by: battani on August 04, 2013, 12:52:52 AM
As more and more people adopt bitcoin, the currency will start attracting viable "competitors" — that's what happens in economics. Economic entities are highly unlikely to thrive on their own without viable and strong alternatives. E.g. the US dollar is widely adopted, but so are other currencies. You can find a Starbucks on every corner, but Peet's Coffee is doing pretty well too. iPhone was dominant, but then Android started eating away at its market share.

If bitcoin survives and thrives, and it's very likely to do so, other crypto-currencies will inevitably gain traction. Currently litecoin is the front-runner among alternative currencies, so it may indeed be a good investment.

In the current macro economic climate, Bitcoin prices are bound to increase. The more countries print money, the worst it is for their currency, the better it is for BTC. Watch out for announcements from Bernanke on QE. The longer the FED sticks to QE, the higher the price of BTC will climb relatively to the USD...
