Title: Walletbit closing with my money
Post by: lindal on July 12, 2013, 03:57:23 AM
Soooo.. Apparently, Walletbit has closed. I found this out totally by accident - just happened to visit the site and see their "closed" page.

Notice was given here, and they updated their site, but I guess it was too much trouble to send out an email to their users? Now, they have no phone contact info on their site because they have "no staff."

I actually have a balance over there and, of course, can't log in. The password reset procedure works but then it just rejects my login. They close for good on the 15th, and I guess at that time they'll just pocket whatever balances they have.

Anyone know how to get in touch with those folks? They don't have a ton of my coin but the idea that they have any is pretty frustrating.

Announcement here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=249751.0

Edit: Heard back from info@walletbit.com, poked around with the password reset and login form some more, and now all is well. The coins are back in hand.

Don't worry, I'm sure suckers will still use BIPS.

lindal,

We will of cause not just run out and spend your bitcoins, the service will just shut down, we'll retain the database and people's account balances, if those few coins left doesn't get withdrawn in time. You will always have the possibility of contacting me, and I will see to it that any outstanding balance is sent directly.

TradeFortress, I think you might be going a bit over the line. Calling BIPS customers suckers ?

I seriously don't like making comments on competitors, however how you're handling WalletBit isn't really good IMO. Instawallet at least had a 90 day claim window.

To me, this would be a betrayal of trust, even if I'm the only user who still uses it. But people choose to do business differently and we should leave it at that.

Let's just leave it as that, shall we... I just don't see your point in the above. If you can provide no help to lindal, why did you even post in this thread ?

Hi Kris,

I just stumbled upon this thread when I was checking the status of my coins at Walletbit. Since I just joined the forum, I cannot send you a PM. What is my course of action to withdraw my coins at Walletbit? I only found out that the site closed down today but I see that it has been shut down as of July 15, 2013.

Thanks,

Leo

Ok, now I'm worried, really worried.  I left two emails last week at info@walletbit.com and no response.  I'd sure like to know how the other people on this thread got their coins back.

Did you ever get your coins back?

I have a few coins stuck at BIPS (which is according to Kris have been a victim of an attack).
I always considered Kris to be a honest guy - I hope that I am not wrong...

Please contact the WalletBit team by email.

Hi,

Can you please confirm that  info@walletbit.com is the correct and working Email address to make contact in regards accessing our walletbit held bitcoins? I have 0.37720969 still left in mine and had absolutely no idea walletbit was being shut down, was an Email sent out to all customers? As I definitely did not receive one.

Thanks in advance.

If they are willing to give you the money they owe you, consider taking legal action with a lawyer, there is no way they can ignore that.

I hope users reading this learn to put their payments to go to to a cold wallet thats offline and runs on linux, and to only transfer bitcoins to a hot wallet when you are going to make a transaction. The point of bitcoin was that people would no longer have to rely on anyone to keep their wealth safe, by using services like this, what's the difference from a bank?

and there are ways to keep your money very secure by yourself. If anyone wants to know my method of security just PM me

Hi,

I just found out that WalletBit closed, too.  No notification at all was sent to me.  Not even an e-mail; nothing in junk/spam folder.

After finding out about it this weekend, I sent an email, but I have not received any response (at least to confirm receipt/looking into the matter).

Can anyone offer any assistance?

Thanks

I also haven't received a response to my email but not a big surprise with what has happened in the Bitcoin world the last few days, I also signed up to Bips support system and opened a ticket there.

Thanks, Grimbarian, please keep me posted.  I did not have a small amount at WalletBit.

Considering they took a fee on my deposit, in exchange for the wallet service; this was not free and, at the least, they owe the ability to withdraw funds.

In regards to what HAS happened in the Bitcoin world (i.e. the value of each BTC): Similar situations dealing with such large sums being stolen would lead to publicly listed addresses of those responsible and/or bad things happening.

I hope they handle this properly.

How many Bitcoins did you lose access to? (if you're comfortable answering of course).

As a precaution, no specific amount, but it greater than 3 digits worth in dollars

Still no reply via e-mail.

Well I wish you luck recovering it, I think we're entitled to their return when it's not our fault we weren't informed of the closure, but I think we also have to respect the issues BIPS are going through right now, hopefully they recover fine and we recover our Bitcoins fine :)

Did you open a ticket on the Bips support system?

Oh boy, that is one hell of a bait comment.  :)

No ticket, yet.  All instructions from WalletBit/Kris have been to e-mail info@walletbit.com, but I am following your updates to see if I should also do that.

I understand their situation with BIPS.  What concerns me is that other users/people should not pay for those mistakes.

Two things:

1) The WalletBit issue is not related.  < The important part.

2) The money/WalletBit database was taken offline (when it closed), as per Kris/WalletBit/etc - safe and sound.  <  The important detail in the important part.

I appreciate that Kris and company's attention is on the BIPS situation, but I will not tolerate them screwing WalletBit's users in order to fix BIPS screw up.  A person's money is their money, that is the irrevocable fact built into Bitcoin.

If there was not many users on WalletBit (as per Kris in this thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=249751), then it should not take so long for those involved/Kris/BIPS to process the few WalletBit e-mails they have.

According to that thread, and this one, it seems to only take minutes to fix the problem.  From their perspective, they would have it over and done with; one less scandal to deal with.

I got a reply sometime the end of November, had a new wallet address in place by December, so really I've been waiting a little over a week.  I think when things calm down over at bips they will get back to us.

The whole purpose of bitcoin or cryto was to be a safe store of value.
Well , at least of of it's purpose.

When you start using an website and deposit you coins there , you're basically  renouncing to all this.
Also , with the current amounts of "hacks" happening , I would advise anyone not to leave their coins in the hands of a third party.

Wondering if you've had any movement with your case or anyone else here?

I opened my BIPS support ticket on December 4th but have had no further reply from the first reply acknowledging the ticket, posted a new reply asking them to update.

So how many other suckers were left in the wind by Kris Henriksen? Shocking that he can just flit from company to company stealing people's money and making false promises, now with some mickey mouse company blockcache https://www.blockcache.com/

Edit: Heard back from info@walletbit.com, poked around with the password reset and login form some more, and now all is well. The coins are back in hand.
You are lucky man, that these people were honest in the end. There was hundreds of wallets that fled with people money.
I hope you will be more carefull in future, use offline storage and software wallets that you control.

Honest in the end? Seriously? Walletbit and in particular Kris Henriksen were not honest at all, never gave me my bitcoin back despite promising he would.

Okay, I’m obviously very late to the party, here.  Can anyone tell me if they’ve heard back from info@walletbit.com?  What exactly is BIPS and how can they help me recover my coins?  Is everyone just waiting to hear back from WalletBit or is there something else we can do?

Thank you.

In principle, now many exchanges are closed, and very well that many were able to return their funds. After all, sometimes they just disappear, and it's not even scammers and exchanges that exist for a long time and have good reviews. So the news is disturbing.
