Could we also add on here why you like that altcoin? There is an absolute flood of altcoins. What drew you to the coin you chose? Likely it was because you get in early or somebody gave you some free ones that you will flip for BTC.

Could you clarify what Bitcoin issues does PPC solve? I do not fully understand how PPC is so different from other Altcoins.

As far as I understand, PoS means that in order to make a 51% attack, an attacker should not only possess 51% of the mining power but also have the 51% minting stakes power, which is much harder to accumulate because one has to hold the most of coins for as long as the network exists, which removes the requirement of keeping a large distributed mining network, making PPC very energy efficient in the long run.

FTC, next would be DGC.

I want to say XPM because it is the first cryptocurrency to calculate something moderately useful when it is mined. I just want people to confirm the security of the coin and then I will say that it's the best alt coin hands down.

Otherwise it would have to be LTC. The rest don't show any true innovation.

Namecoin also has a nice idea underneath, but unfortunately does not seem to develop that actively.

Primecoin, because unlike Bitcoin or Litecoin, Primecoin doesn't seem to have any limit in the amount that it is going to be minted (or circulated ... ... may be) in the near future. Hence allowing more end-users to participate in using XPM.

XPM currently may not be as popular as its predecessors Btc / Ltc, but it has plenty of potential.

Digitalcoin and fastcoin...  DIgitalcoin faster and great name for mass adoption...  Fastcoin for its fast conformation times.. closest usable thing compaired to credit card conformations..  that is a big plus point to every having a crypto be adopted and replacing traditional credit card transactions.

Yep, it turns out I was a bit outdated on the info. There is even a GUI client now. I am really happy that such a great idea does not fade away.

I believe we should start a movement to support old cool coins and ignore new crappy ones.

I think that it goes without saying that Litecoin has some of the greatest benefits of any cryptocurrency, even that of bitcoin.

While bitcoin works like a gold system with an ever increasing value, the inflating nature of liteocin is awesome.

I certainly hope that litecoin will become just as ubiquitous if not moreso than bitcoin in the future, so that we can have a stable and standard internet currency :D

Granted bitcoin has its merits as well, it feels like more for a cash grab when you look at it holistically.

When mt.gox starts trading them, I will certainly be happy but I am particularly worried that it will take a long time to restabilize.

It would also be particularly convenient for LTC to stick at around 2 USD because it could become quite a reasonable and ubiquitous resource in ecommerce.

Namecoin is also an interesting prospect, but unfortunately it will probably never gain the amount of ground litecoin has gained.

With all that said and done, I would personally prefer litecoin>bitcoin>namecoin. I have high hopes for LTC in the future!

Does not Litecoin share the same deflationary model as Bitcoin? As far as I know the difference is only in number of total coins which is meaningless because of scaling, the faster block generation time which according to different sources makes it more vulnerable to double-spend attacks or more secure, and scrypt that protects against ASICs. Which is again meaningless because the original idea was to let anyone mine on their CPUs and CPU mining is no longer viable. So, could please anyone explain to me the real benefits of Litecoin? I can see none other than it at least has some economy and acceptance.

I actually really like FTC. Not just because it is scrypt-based, but I worry about the supply of BTC and even LTC if they were (and I know it's a pipe dream) adopted as the dominant global currency. With a total supply of FTC ~336m, and smallest unit at 0.00000001, that means the total units are ~33600000000000000. Divide that between 7b people and that's about 4800000 per person. That should be a pretty good level of granularity that we can still express small amounts of money even if everyone in the world was using it as their primary currency.

As if Bitcoin weren’t granular enough.
Even if Bitcoin price reaches $10000 with current granularity (which can be easily adjusted if the needs arise) one can deal with prices up to 0.01 cents. Which is not so useful anyway.

XPM is interesting but damn hard to mine...

Seems Gox is having a bit of problems with their timelines.

I don't know if it'll happen this month or not, honestly the longer it takes is more opportunity for me to buy/mine more before it happens.

I like DMD because there're only 4.38 mil total... they are really rare compared to other currencies :)

I've been mining LTC for the last couple of month since I joined the mining crowd.

I personally think that LTC can no longer be considered an Alt coin, but it is my favourite (especially when you consider it has a sure history unlike Bitcoin).

In terms of the true Alts.... FTC is my favourite as its dev team are amazing, NMC next because it offers something different.

Coins like NVC I never really understood as to why they are worth so much.... Same applies for PPC and TRC, pure pump and dump machines in my eyes.

I like PPC & YAC both the most. You can make lots of PPC if you got a half way decent GPU / ASIC setup, there is a 1% POS interest p.a. and the POS protects the coin from evil takeovers. YAC is very nice for a halfway decent GPU setup, as there are not much much miners at the moment so that you can get lots of coins, ASICs are locked out, the coin is protected by POS as well and there is a POS interest of 5% p.a.
Philosophers Stone and Lebowskis are also very nice (both have a very high POS interest), but IMHO they need a bit of more time to mature and build up a POS protection to become realy interesting.
Coins without POS (except the main coins BTC, LTC, NMC, DVC, IXC) are a waste of time and hashrate IMHO.

I don't like altcoins at all. They may be useful to test new ideas, but not for investments. There aren't many ways to use altcoins, comparing to BTC.

The only potentially useful altcoin was NMC, but it didn't succeeded.

I am mining LTC and holding it, waiting for the price to rise.  But I also mine DGC (DigitalCoin).

Many of the alt coins are really half-assed and will ultimately be worthless, but DGC is starting to grow in overseas markets, and is poised to pop big time.  You heard it here first.  Consider this insider information, but I'm not going into more details.  Get a good stock of DGC to sell in a few months.

All non-PoW coins will be attacked and destroyed with control of a minority of peers, else these coins will become centralized using trusted peer nodes. Only Satoshi-like PoW systems will survive as decentralized systems with attacks only possible by controling more than 50% of the mining peers.

I like YAC, the doubling of memory required at known intervals + POS make it interesting.

But looking at the Alt-cryptocurrency subforum, it looks like every man and his dog is forking a coin these days.  There are too many types of coin.

Not every one.  Some try to be fair and deliberately don't try to mine blocks before the release announcement, for example PPC, XPM, I believe.  210,000 blocks isn't tens of blocks though, is it?

Only 18 more months of mining to go and then there should be a massive deflationary cycle for the coin which should hoefully make the price run hard and fast.

Of course there is one caveat:  nobody knows what happens to a coin once there's no more coins to mine.

I am watching quark as that coin is set to hit terminal output in about 4 months.  Although it won't be quite the same as quark will have 1 million coins per year each and every year but it should be a good test coin to watch.

So many people assume LTC will be Bitcoin 2.0 which is a great contrarian indicator saying, with high probability, that LTC will NOT be the next Bitcoin and most likely it will be a coin most would never expect:  such as ixCoin. 


I seriously doubt more than 20 people on this planet are currently actively accumulating ixCoin.  And I am one of them which makes me effing special!


The upcoming Bitcoin ETF should be a massive catalyst for all alt coins which should also bring about the next and new LTC.  LTC may hit $30 on the Bitcoin ETF but 1,000% is nothing compared to what you can make if you do choose the next LTC or BTC.

You may be right.  That's why I bought some Gamecoin, even though Gamecoin is seen as a dead or dying coin.  There is so much that can be done with these coins which have generic but very mass appeal names. They just need some marketing and funding, and if Bitcoin gets its ETF that should happen.

I don't support propagating more trash thru our society but i may have to pick up some SXC just as a speculative move.

If I heard right the 1 million coins will be mined by the end if this year.
After that there will be a modest 0.5% per year (miners) inflation.
I think that's good enough to be considered a gold standard. (given that even gold is mined)
Either way I think of alts mostly as fun tokens mostly. Hopefully they won't end up hurting bitcoins in the long run.

Precisely my feeling.  LTC is a perfect contrarian coin to avoid.  So many people think it's gonna be the next bitcoin that there are not many new buyers left to drive the price up.

I'd buy some LTC just for spec reasons but I would not focus any real amounts of money on LTC.  It's looking very much overhyped!  The idea is to buy the coins nobody else is buying but which at the same time have a lot of potential.  

For me ixCoin seems to fit the bill near perfectly.  Especially if the bankers get involved:  they'll look for a Bitcoin twin to sell as the next ETF, and I don't know of any coin which fits the Bitcoin mold as nicely as ixCoin.

But I digress....

If you like that coin then you should check out quark since it will stop mining in a few months as well and it's much cheaper.  Granted, quark will have like 270 million total coins, but it's very cheap right now - all things considering.

I'm not too familiar with the newer unknown coins.  Thanks for the input, I may have to add some DMD to my spec list!

Once the Bitcoin ETF launches a few of these little known about coins will really take off.  Most are so cheap now that it doesn't take much to accumulate some of the more promising names.  Last week I put nearly 10 BTC in about 14 different coins.  But DMD was not one of them so I'll have to revisit that one.

What do you guys consider "a stack" or hoarding?  Is 1% of the final total coins considered hoarding?  So for ixCoin that would be 210,000 coins.  If you think about it, most coins can be hoarded with relatively little money and much more easily if you can mine.

That's a pretty sure way to hit the next big coin when it comes most likely early to mid next year.

If those are the 2 main reasons you're accumulating LTC then you should know there are a bunch of alt coins right now which beat LTC on both advantages.  

Obviously.  I haven't done the math to see if they're cheaper in real terms.  Was just pointing out there's another coin with the same idea of a short mining life.  Should be interesting to see what happens to these coins when they run out of tarmac.

It's as silly as ShoelaceCoin.  Zero imagination.  Lack of imagination is a deal breaker for me, hence I don't hold even a single feather in my cap.

If that's your rationale then I'm pretty sure you'll like another coin but the name of Bitcoin a lot more.

Lola ShoelaceCoin was a joke, just the first silly name that popped in my head.  Which was the point I was trying to make.  I look for some Imagination and originality in the coins I accumulate because I think those are tell-tales of good management and the future of that particular coin.

What is so special about ixCoin im missing?

PPC, because it offers useful innovation.  Instead of coins only being made from mining, coins are also made by every holder of PPC who earns a very small amount of interest on their coins.  This saves electricity by having far less miners, which is environmentally friendly.  It's simple, and a worthy challenger to Bitcoin, more so than any of the other alts.

Soon it's gonna be a rare commodity since mining is gonna end in less than 18 months.

1) Difficulty is rising at a faster rate than Bitcoin due to all the new ASICS merge mining, making ixCoin very hard to mine with each passing day.

2) Benefit over Bitcoin is that all 21 million coins will be on the market which gives ixCoin more liquidity than Bitcoin or a Bitcoin ETF which is a much needed feature for an ETF.

3) Fully Intact block-chain.

4) Old school coin, one of the very first coins which has survived and is well recognized.

5) The closest existing alt coin to a Bitcoin including the name of the founder.


So what does all this mean?  Well, if you don't believe in the Bitcoin ETF then not much but if you think the Bitcoin ETF is coming soon then you have to presume wallstreet, bankers, speculators and hedge funds will look to start another ETF using a different coin or a basket of alt coin or most likely both.

Now looking at all the alt coins, if you were a banker trying to sell another ETF like bitcoin wouldn't you choose a coin which very closely resembles Bitcoin in order to give your ETF the best odds of success?  It's like Samsung copying everything about the iPhone, people buy that which they recognize.  

This happened in 1994 with the first Internet stock fund.  They all laughed at first (just like they're laughing at the first Bitcoin ETF now) but once that fund blew up all the bankers were scrambling to start new Internet funds which of course created a massive dot com boom and bubble.

The same thing will happen here I think and if it does then ixCoin is the best absolute candidate for the reasons I mentioned above.   And the coming Bitcoin and alt coin bubble should be massive, bigger and more volatile than the Tech/Internet bubble of the 90's.


Needless to say I've bought more than 1% of ixCoin over the past 2 months. I may buy more but it's getting pretty hard to accumulate right now.  Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut but it's too exciting to see these new developments, especially in regard to the Bitcoin ETF.

Interesting topic. The favorite coins seems to be highly related to the biggest bag of the person holding them. With so many coins out there there are really only a couple which have any true innovation in software and developer skills to push them to the next big coin.

This makes sence, when you hold coins you wish the coin get better adoption thus higher price

I like LTC as alt coin. I hope it's price will rise now.

Litecoin is PROVEN to be the best alt coin, and after that is feathercoin, I think.

I like sexcoin because I got 1k sexcoins for free from the LAVAPIT FAUCET and they gone up to 20 cents so that made me happy especially as I am facing real difficulties at the moment in life, so it cheered me up. :)
