Title: Ledger Nano S BTC & BCH mixup
Post by: lyseoy on December 10, 2017, 09:19:19 PM
So I want to free up some of the limited space on the Nano S for adding another app. I am not holding any BCH, so I was going to delete that one. To my big surprise though, when I open the BCH application, just to double check the balance, I see the same balance as I would when I open the BTC app!  ??? ??? ??? So now I'm scared to delete it, fearing that I might inadvertantly delete bitcoins along with it! Anybody seen the same thing?

Thinking I should temporarily transfer all my bitcoins off the Nano S, then delete the BCH app, and then transfer back the bitcions.

Deleting apps doesn't "delete" any of your coins... you are free to remove the BCH app, install another app (say LTC app), then remove the LTC app and reinstall the BCH app and all your coins will be fine.

Remember, coins are "stored" on the Blockchain, NOT in your device. The only thing in your device is the seed/private keys... and ALL the wallets are generated one the same seed (your 24 words) ;)

When did you put the BTC on your Ledger? if it was BEFORE August 1st, then you're looking at the BCH you got from the fork :)

Thank you. That's a much better explanation than what Ledger support offered! (Their response time is excellent. Quality of their answers is not)

Well, here's the funny thing: All the BTC's were bought and put on the Ledger long after August 1st. And I have never put any BCH on the Ledger. 100% seems like a but that I have a non-zero balance on my BCH wallet.

It's probably a quirk with the way it handles BCH... Because a lot of people got BCH from the fork, they had to setup a method where you could see BCH on m/44'/0'/0' instead of the actual derivation path for BCH of m/44'/145'/0' .... so I'd assume it's because you selected "Bitcoin Cash" -> "Main"... this effectively shows your BTC account, but listed as BCH. You'll probably notice all your transactions are identical to your BTC ones.

Select the "Main" option to transact using your main Bitcoin account and initially transfer your coins to a dedicated account, or the "Split" option to transact using a dedicated account

It's all a bit confusing, but was setup so you could easily get the BCH stored on the BTC addresses. I believe the correct one for the "BCH" specific account is "Bitcoin Cash" -> "Split"
