Title: Electrum's Additional Fees
Post by: Frankto on December 11, 2017, 09:03:02 PM
Hey guys. New to all this, I have a quick question. I'm trying to send 7 mBTC over to somebody but Electrum tells me my fees would be 0.088987 mBTC at the lowest... and when I try to go through with it, slaps me with a 5 mBTC additional fee.

Is there any way I can get around this?

Much obliged.

Ok, just to make sure:

Do you know what change addresses are and how they work?

I will advice you to avoid using bitcoin for small transactions, your transaction will take days to get a single confirmation with that fees. Your best bet is to use some altcoin such as LTC/BCH

I read up a bit on change addresses but I'm not 100% sure how it applies here. Also I'm afraid 7 mBTC is all I have to trade with.

Thanks.

Sounds like you've set up a 2FA wallet... and ignored all the warnings and information about how you have to PAY for the 2FA service: https://api.trustedcoin.com/#/electrum-help

Your choices are either click the little blue shield in the bottom right corner and select the cheapest option available (if you want to retain 2FA functionality)... OR you can simply restore your wallet from Seed... and select "Disable" when prompted if you want to "keep or disable" the 2FA functionality.

This will put 2 of the 3 private keys in your wallet, and you'll be able to send transactions without using TrustedCoin (ie. NO 2FA)... but you won't have to prepay for the 2FA functionality.

Looks like you have your question answered, but for completeness sake:

I see a lot of new people opening threads about how their funds are stolen, because they are unaware of the way change addresses work. I thought this might be a similar incident.
