Title: MetaMask - How save is it?
Post by: simplymieke on December 14, 2017, 08:35:12 AM
The Envion token that is set to launch tomorrow recommends using Metamask, the Chrome extension.

I'm just wondering how safe this Metamask really is.

They also support MyEtherWallet, which I use with my Trezor. Any idea what would be the best choice?

MetaMask is a very lightweight wallet, although it currently only supports chrome browsers. I used this wallet, very easy to use and safe, so far I have not lost any ETH and ERC20 TOKEN. But what you need to know is that the wallet's private key is a dozen mnemonic instead of a long list of codes.

i also use metemask for quite some time and all i can say so far is that it is a good wallet that can be used as an alternative to some etherium wallet. it is also much safer and secure than myetherwallet although it is mainly works on a chrome browser. myetherwallet is also a good eth walllet that supports all tokens and coins which is under etherium's erc20 but always be careful when using myetherwallet because there were so many reports that users had lost their coins and tokens due to some phising site.

I never experienced any problems with metamask. But i didn't use metamask too much.
They have their source published at GitHub (https://github.com/MetaMask (https://github.com/MetaMask)).
Since metamask is used by quite a lot people and their code seems alright (didn't verify myself, but no bugs found so far by the community),
I think its fine to use. But the security of metamask is capped by your browser and PC itself.
For higher amounts (which you can't afford to lose) you should consider using a hardware/paper wallet for storing.

Myetherwallet together with a hardware wallet is the safest (handy) option.

Metamask is surely a safe option. Just like any other wallet, it gives you private keys and seed phrases which you have to keep somewhere safe. But the trezor+Myetherwallet is a safer option. Metamask is mainly used to interact with sites that are web ETH Dapps, like Cryptokitties. So if that token site is ETH interactive site, then using Metamask can make things easier for you.

Myetherwallet also recommends to use metamask and I think it's safe. If you do not publish private key and not go to phishing site, I think myetherwallet is a good choice and easy to use. Your hardware wallet (trezor) is also the right choice and very safe.

MetaMask is more than just an Ether wallet. It's an Ethereum Browser, like Mist! It allows you all the same functions, features and ease of access from regular Ethereum Wallets, and it allows you to interact with Dapps and Smart Contracts, and all without the need to download the blockchain or install any software, you can just install it as a Google Chrome Extension! Plus, it has a cool fox logo that follows your mouse around, which made us smile. So, let's get started with MetaMask!

Part 1 - Installing MetaMask

Step 1: get the MetaMask plugin first at chrome webstore
Step 2: Click "Add to Chrome" to Install MetaMask as Google Chrome extension.
Step 3: Click "Add Extension" to confirm and MetaMask will be added

Part 2 - Creating a new wallet

Step 1: Click the MetaMask logo
Step 2: Read and agree to the MetaMask terms and Conditions
Step 3: Click "Create a new vault"
Step 4: Enter a strong password and click "OK"
Step 5: Metamask will now show you your seed. It is very important that you copy and store those 12 worlds, without them you cannot restore your wallet.

Part 3 - Changing to the Mainnet & Funding your account

Step 1: Click "Modern Testnet"
Step 2: Choose "Main Ethereum Network"
Step 3: MetaMask will now ask you for the password. Type it in and click "Unlock"
Step 4: Click the copy logo to get your wallet address. Then all you have to do send Ether to it from your favorite exchange or wallet.

Part 5 - Sending Ether

Step 1: Click "Send"
Step 2: Enter the wallet address to where you want to send Ether to (1), Enter the amount of Ether you want to send (2) and click "Send" (3)
Step 3: Confim the transaction data and click "Accept"

And that's it! You can now send and recieve Ether on your MetaMask wallet. Furthermore, you'll also be able to visit Ethereum

It also supports Firefox. What I like about this addons is support many ICO project. But I kind of worry about it being as add-ons. I believe it's not a wise thing to keep a large amount of ETH in a web-based wallet.

So far  I have no problem using MetaMask and one good thing is it's easy to use. It very handy for those who have a lot of erc20 tokens that they received from bounties. It has a private key and seed that will give you a safe protection but it's only an online wallet and not advisable to store all your ETH

Been using it for 3 months and nothing has been stolen so far, unlike in MEW; which made me to create many wallets because it's always hacked, METAMASK has seed phrase w/c can be an advantage.

I've seen many bounty hunters changing their MEW wallet addresses because they were hacked, and it made me uncomfortable of the issue.

Did anyone of you ever faced this error in Metamask 'Sorry, we are unable to locate this transaction hash'. I did five transactions today and I got this error in all transactions then I had to resort to Myetherwallet to do my transactions. How can I resolve this issue?

I used MetaMask once before, didn't feel good with it!
Recommending to you the Official Wallet of Ethereum (Light Client), easy to use and safe.
- Light client: Develop > Sync with light client.
- Add your token: Contracts > Watch token.

I see various people using the metamask as the lightweight wallet and test net while making the smart contract project. So far there is no any news which is relevant to metamask and no hacking issue as well.
Still I have used the ERC20 address without the help of metamask. I do not trust any third party but I have read their privacy agreement says they will not be accessing to your wallet's private seed side at all.
Then you want to speak about the any topic better create the own thread. Simply making the post on in active thread on this forum is not good bro.

When metamask was introduced I did make a sample or testing on how things go work into this new wallet which I do say it is lite and very easy to use but you would really notice such changes if you do came in Myetherwallet. I do like it but In the end I do still prefer on using up Myetherwallet because this is the wallet been using since I do know about erc20 tokens which I do decide to stick with it and as you said it is really handy.

Not only that Metamask is only applicable on Chrome (which they should consider to be used on other browsers too).Just like Myetherwallet i have seen frauds and phishing apps and links on Metamask on where you can see on googleplay itself and as a newbie we should be aware. heres the link for chrome https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/metamask/nkbihfbeogaeaoehlefnkodbefgpgknn?hl=en . being safe would always depend on user side.

You should just treat it like a toilet.
Just do your business and get out
