Title: Question about powering BFL Single SC
Post by: evlew on July 18, 2013, 06:11:28 AM
So the power supply that was included burned out after only a few days of mining.  I have it running on another PSU for the mean time.  However, I just ordered this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139049&Tpk=cx430m&IsVirtualParent=1 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139049&Tpk=cx430m&IsVirtualParent=1)

I received it today and unfortunately I didn't realize it only had one PCIe connector instead of two.  Not a big deal but I was going for cleanliness which is why I opted for the modular model.  My question is this:

Can I use something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812198018 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812198018) to split the one PCIe connector into two?  Would that be shorting it on power or anything like that?  Or would I be better of using an additional cable with a 4 pin to 6pin PCIe adapter? Would it even matter?

Thanks in advance

Have you tried getting a replacement from BFL?  When I got my Jalapeno, it didnt come with a USB cable like it should have, so I had to get my own.  I told them about it and they sent me a cable still.  I know there was a user who reported one of his fan blades broke on his Jalapeno and he requested a replacement from BFL and they sent him one.  If you only had it a few days and the power supply indeed was faulty and burnt out, they should send you a replacement.

yea... not trying to bash them but I wasn't exactly thrilled with BFL's response to the situation.  I was told I need to "get a new PSU or ship us the bad one and wait a really long time because we are currently shipping without power supplies. sorry."

I already ordered the new PSU which was probably $20 more than it would have cost me to ship this monster back to BFL (even if they could replace it in a reasonable time).

I'd rather use a molex --> PCIe than a PCIe splitter.  Then you have the electricity at least flowing through two different sets of 12v wiring.  But to be honest, it would probably be fine either way.
