Title: Canaan controller (Ras Pi 3) freezing randomly
Post by: cstreit911 on December 14, 2017, 05:28:48 PM
My controller has frozen twice in the last 24 hours (new setup).  I have the latest build.

Any suggestions on where to go to start diagnosing?  No significant error cores shown.    I can't find any logs in /sys/log on the Pi.

Thanks!

Just re-image it. Takes 30 seconds and will save you all that time troubleshooting.

Thanks for the reply.

I did that and the lockup still occurred.  Do I need to format the remaining partitions on the Pi's SD card that appear to be unused?

I've now switched the power supply to another 2.5A adaptor.  So far running 7 hours without a hiccup.  We'll see how it goes....

I sure wish I could find log files thought.. Any ideas?

No the rest of the SD is blank, its an 80mb image. You shouldnt have to do anything fancy. If you had a weak power supply before that may well have been the freezing problem. Minimum 2 amp because those AUCs do pull a lil bit of power.

It was a 2.5A charger - but it was from a Cana kit - and plenty of people seemed to have issues with those.  I have a nice reliable 2.1A tablet charger on it now.  12 hours in and not a single hiccup.

I did add a script to check the ethernet connection periodically and reboot if it drops because that seems to precede the lockup.

So far - so good.

Thanks for the responses fanatic26.

Flakiness on an Rpi is usually power supply issues or bad usb cable supplying the power, but I think you are realizing that yourself.  :)  Make sure your pi adapter is on the same power strip as the miner's power supply to avoid ground issues as adapters typically don't have a 3rd ground prong.

Thanks.  I have it on the same strip as the miner... Although I thought that maybe it should be different due to variable power draw.

I'll read up on ground issues.  New thing to learn.  :)

Been running 15 hours now without a hiccup...
