It is a lot of forks, no reason for that.
The devs just figure out how to get easy money by forking the bitcoin, some people got scammed  trying to get the free coins.

Stay alert.

And do you really notice it just now? They have been trying to do the same, and bitcoin cash is the same, it was a fork only for creating a money-grab scheme for Roger Ver and his friends, nothing more than that.

this is what happens when core puts code in to deliberately ban nodes that are not core. it opens the floodgate of alts. and centralises code control more in favour of core

if core left it for the orphaning mechanism (consensus) to function. then the script kiddies would actually need to re-code alot more, and thus less altcoins would occur.

but now we have this centralised system where the only time the bitcoin network upgrades, is if core have controlled it.

but hey no one cares about decentralisation, they just care about free coins and a false presence of decentralisation which is actually just distribution

'decentralisation is dead, long live coin distribution'

A family tree chart created using Charting Companion from Progeny Genealogy. Charting Companion is the only genealogy software product available that will create a left-to-right Descendant Chart. This unique chart shows a how to earn bitcoin and typical descendant left-to-right layout, displaying more information in less space.

Oh boy, this is indeed happening. Nice graph btw. Now if only one could safely access these forks without exposing their private keys, that'd be grrreat. However I hardly expect hardware wallet providers to implement every shitfork there is.

Still waiting for people hardforking the hardforks, that should make for an interesting dynamic if pulled off well.

This bitcoin forks have made bitcoin into a very complicated ones. Just by looking at the bitcoin tree it will give you a headaches since there are many splits and bitcoin has many sons and daughters online. Some of those coins are alien to me, it is my first time seeing some of them, thanks to this post I have added new information about bitcoin and its clones.

MA40, omg, I didn't know there were so many forks invoked. I heard that btc lightning is supposed to make transactions cheaper. Are there any thought on that? Will it truly help? Oh, and will it be an official fork on btc implemented into it, or another coin like bch and btg? According to the scheme it's the latter, right?
I am also wondering why the tree starts on the 1st of August, since on 6 August 2010 there was an issue that lead to btc getting forked for the first time (even though it didn't lead to bifurcation of it).

Hi,

Thank you for sharing... this is such a mess. I see why forks are important but I guess some could have been avoided. I am not sure they have all brought something to the bitcoin itself.

If you add the other altcoins to this, you clearly understand why newbie are having hard times figurng out where to invest!

I hope we are not going to "lose" the spirit of bitcoin with all these operations!

It really is overkill, it has and is destroying Bitcoin as everybody just jumps to new alts hoping to get rich very quickly. Hey ho, seems like to dream of decentralisation is gone.

Actually, forks are the natural way of upgrading decentralized immutable systems, exactly like in biological evolution.  So all this is very positive.   Forks are like genetic mutations: out of the mother species come two or several daughter species.  They compete, and some survive, some find different eco systems.  Much better than centralized collectivist decision techniques like voting.

Lots of bits of bitcoin names that want to fall the popularity of bitcoin. Nowadays many people still believe in the existence of bitcoin at a higher price than other bitcoins that are called bitcoins. Gradually bitcoin can become a legend in the crypto world until the end of the apocalypse. 8)

There's too much unnecessary forks included (mostly those joke, cashgrabs or both like Bitcoin God & Pizza shouldn't be here), while the old forks like Litecoin (https://www.google.com.ph/search?rlz=1C1CHBF_enPH768PH768&ei=KXoXW4HDO4mM8wWQiZnICg&q=litecoin&oq=litecoin&gs_l=psy-ab.1.1.35i39k1l2j0i67k1l8.4119.5827.0.8320.8.8.0.0.0.0.194.1063.0j6.6.0....0...1c.1.64.psy-ab..2.6.1063...0i10i67k1j0i131i67k1j0i131k1.0.Pi4qI1oMyRs) aren't.
Can you add the forks from the older blocks prior to Bitcoin Cash? There are a lot of forks behind that.

This looks like a "Phylogenetic tree", the Evolution of Cryptocurrency  :)
In this case, Bitcoin is an Aligator, still surviving without any major changes to its design.
I hope someone can make a "graphical version" of this.

I think the main intention of this thread is to keep track of hardforked coins, ie. alts that share a blockchain history with Bitcoin. Litecoin doesn't quite fit that bill, I'm afraid. I personally find it delightful to see the absurdity of all these shitforks gathered in one place.

It's not really up to date though, I'm afraid.

Whoa, thanks a lot! Another page worthy of a bookmark.
I'm going to draw something like an evolutionary chart based on that (updated version) if I got the time and "motivation", because it's really a nice idea.
I've expected that there's a lot of past (repository) forks but, I didn't expect that there's already 667 forks in total just from start to Sept 2015.
Add today's shitforks and we will get 19,384 as displayed in Github, minus the "unadvertised" forks: ±3000, maybe?

Wow, this is very helpful post.

Anyway this illustrate how many forks Bitcoin have. It also shows you how many people are envious with Bitcoin. Besides Bitcoin cash for me all fork that was made are trash (some may disagree). To be honest for me people should just stop forking Bitcoin. More likely than not people will always look for the original.

Wow, that's some nice information you have gotten for us. So are all these forks performing the functions they claimed they were to provide? That's open for another discussion another day. Anyways you've done a great job for the compilation. Keep it up.

It would be better if you use -------- lines to show the split and then use the solid lines to show the Bitcoin tree, because those are forks of the original coin and they are Alt coins now and not part of the original chain anymore.  ;)

People should see a clear difference between the real Bitcoin <BTC> and all the other cheap knockoff coins in the tree. You do not want to spoil the original DNA of the real Bitcoin <BTC> with the Wannabe Coins.  ::)
