Title: Is CPU to Pcie converter safe?
Post by: Mandeep148 on December 19, 2017, 03:13:50 PM
Hi,
I actually ordered pcie extention cable, waiting 20 days to reach my location, after that fool seller sent me cpu to pcie concerter wire, it looks like Y one side cpu and other 2 x 6 pin pcie,
I always ask before action, so i ask here,
Is it safe to use that converter?
Edit. Want to use it on gtx 1070

maybe

but I am not sure  what you want to do.

are you looking to extend an 8 pin  pcie to an 8 pin pcie?
this one works
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B46XKJW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?

are you looking to extend a 6 pin pcie to a 6 pin pcie?
this one works

https://www.amazon.com/Silverstone-Sleeved-Extension-Connector-PP07-IDE6BR/dp/B00H45K3QA/ref=sr_1_5?

it sounds like you have this one

https://www.amazon.com/GutsParker-Micro-6-Pin-Female-8-Pin/dp/B01NBMS46B/ref=sr_1_3?

or this one

https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Splitter-Graphics-Extension-TeamProfitcom/dp/B077WRCZWD/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?

you need to test with  a meter to be sure they were built correctly

Im using two power supply of 650 watts, both have 2 8pin wires
Using it on 2 gtx 1070 and one gtx 1060,
One cable to power gtx 1060 is too small so i ordered extention cable but he sent me cpu to pcie cable.
Dont know if it is safe or not.
Edit. This is what i got.
If i order from amazon i need to wait again and Christmas time also near, but cant risk safety, just need clarification that this cable is safe or not.

I am using these converters to increase an amount of pci-e cables in my rigs. Work fine for two gtx 1060 each.
You can use it with your 8pin cpu connector, not with your pci-e cable. They have an inversed pin layout.

For example, I am using some 850w psu that have only 4 pci-e cables, but enough power for 6 gtx 1060. So I prefer using this converter instead of powering my cards with adapters from molex.

It can connect to a second cpu cable and if it was wired properly  it will convert to pcie.

As I said you need a meter to be sure it was wired correctly.

Some are wired wrong and kill off gpu's.

Just because it is an 8 pin connector on one side, does not mean it is for connecting to an 8 pin to CPU cable.  It could be.  Or it could be a PCIe power extension cable, which is could be 8 pins or 6 pins.  The 8 pin PCIe power cables are wired differently than the 8 pin CPU power cables.  Be very careful.

Based upon the OPs original post, it is not clear at all what he is working with.  Pictures of the cable and the 8 pin connector would help.  He said he ordered a PCIe Extension cable, but that he got a CPU extension cable with a y on it.  Never heard of CPU power extension cable with a Y output to 2x6 pin connectors.  That would seem to overload that line considerably.  I have seen 8 pin PCIe extension cables that Y out to 2 PCIe 6 pin cables.
