I have set up this thread to record all the UK organisations that are taking Bitcoin. This first post will be regularly edited to keep the list up to date.

I find it frustrating that I cannot spend my BTC in more places in the UK! So I have personally been targeting local organisations to tell them about Bitcoin and provide them with support to start accepting it; many of the names listed here are a direct result of my efforts mainly in Brighton and London.

I hope this list will encourage other organisations in the UK to start accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment. So if you take Bitcoin and are not listed here please post and I will add you. We want to hear your story.

Selection Criteria:
    • Organisation must have presence in the UK, Isle of Man, Bailiwick of Guernsey, Bailiwick of Jersey or Shetland Islands or target goods and services specifically at those regions.
    • Organisation must state clearly that they accept cryptocurrency as payment; e.g. on their website or at their physical shop counter.
    • It must be clear (in the opinion of the OP) what goods or services an organisation is providing.
    • Goods or services must be available, i.e. not a kickstarter project or pre-order.

I want to do the same for my region - are you aware of any guides/experiences on how to to "sell" the benefits of Bitcoin to various types of businesses (online, offline, industry-specific, ie. coffee shops, hardware stores, electronics retailers, etc.) - is there maybe a thread on bitcointalk?

I was trying to make a PDF to hand out to people, like a one side A4/A5 explanation of the benefits of Bitcoin and how to accept it for your business, but I've not had the time yet.

The key thing that I am still not clear on - and I think is key for retailers accepting Bitcoin - is what mobile clients are best and how does one use an iPhone to make payments?

Any advice on this welcome.

I agree - this is a major one that I have encountered as well. In Berlin, many merchants just post a big QR code on a piece of paper next to their cash register and keep a laptop running with Blockchain.info open and wait until the transaction comes in. Others have even been using iPads (also, just logging into Blockchain.info).

now, for their customers using an iPhone, not sure myself- but I am going to ask around on Saturday (in Berlin - anyone come by if you get a chance: http://bitcoinexaminer.org/bxb-2-bitcoin-exchange-berlin-will-have-a-second-round/) and report back :)

 ~5 years later and millions of quid invested, and now:

Hey there. I'm from the UK and I run the (somewhat recently not as maintained as I would like it to be) site www.getbitcoin.info . Feel free to pilfer some data from there AS LONG as you contribute back as well ! I haven't even put the Pembury Tavern in (which .. if I may add I was the first ever person to order a beer with bitcoin in)

Lately, however, I've been just too busy with non bitcoin stuff so I haven't had a chance to update it recently.

There is also an android app that goes by the name of "bitcoin businesses" which is just a simple map app retrieving the data. This app is open source and available on github here: https://github.com/ragmondo/bitcoinbiz

I won't hide my business intent, I plan to give access to the data for free as long as the data is used in its complete nature. The html I generate includes links (add new / comment on this establishment etc) back to the my site which must be included if you use the data.

I am going to talk to somebody today about making a "World Bitcoin Merchant Directory" website.

The idea would be that merchants email their details and then add them to the directory.

Listings would be come under headings. eg.  Country, County/State, City, Town/Suburb and then grouped with the type of business.

I would just like to contribute that, what with various references to OpenStreetMap.org in this thread, that the developers behind OpenStreetMap.org themselves accept Bitcoin donations, amongst other methods (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Donate)

I searched the forum and this was the only thread with significant mention of their site, so I thought it may benefit their efforts to highlight their accepting of BTC donations, although they are not strictly speaking UK based, despite being hosted in the UK. They have, as you might expect, an open standards license pertaining to their map data. There is no information that I could find as to whether their code is open source, but it's a valuable resource regardless, and has been to me for some time now (my go-to for map data, in fact).

I shall be supporting them regularly upon this discovery.

Only me. Twice while I was showing the landlord the process, and once since then.

At the moment, they are using my Bitpay account to process the payments but when me and the landlord have a spare half hour I will set him up with his own account.

Training all the bar staff will be the hardest part. But to get them interested, I have given them each one of my T-shirts with their own Bitcoin address QR code on the sleeve for accepting tips.

Last night while sat in the King William beer garden, the landlady came running out and with a mixture of excitement and confusion said to me "someone's just turned up and wants to pay with Bitcoin what do I do"

I went inside and sure enough our first 3 new customers had travelled from Swansea just to have a drink and use Bitcoin.

Spent a great evening with the guys talking, drinking and playing pool (unfortunately the pool table doesn't take Bitcoin)
