Title: A quick question on GPU detection
Post by: rizabbasi on December 20, 2017, 05:26:32 PM
Hi,

Quick question:

Would Sapphire RX 580 would show in Device Manager > Display adapter if I plug in GPU and riser and power on the machine (for the first time) OR would it show Microsoft Basic Display Adapter?

Do I need to install the driver (I would install Radeon Software Crimson ReLive Edition Beta for Blockchain Compute driver) so that its shown in the Device Manager?

Looking forward and thanking you in anticipation.

Regards,

Rizwan

When you boot up your system for the first time, the GPU will be displayed as Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.
This will indicate that the system has recognized the GPU plugged in the system and after you install the dedicated driver for that GPU, It'll display as RX 580 in Device Manager.

Thank you. One related question:

Should I plug in both GPUs (currently I have two) and install the driver or install one-by-one i.e. plugging in first install driver and then plugging in second and install driver?

Secondly, do I have to install the driver from executing the .exe file or from the Device Manager individually by right clicking on the device entry?

For two cards, there is no difference (except for time) that you put in the card system together or separately. Nuances can be used when installing 4+ cards.
On the drivers: if it is exclusively mining then it's easier to install the driver from the *.inf file. In this case, no additional software will be installed (Control Center, HDMI audio). If for a full-fledged work, it's better to install from the *.exe file.

You can plug both GPUs at the same time. You really have to install them one by one only if something is not going right.
Run the .exe, it's just simpler this way. If you are connected to internet, windows might start installing the latest driver itself. If it happened and you still want to use blockchain drivers, you'd better remove them with DDU (display driver uninstaller)

I got only the .exe file from this link:

After its launch it will offer to unpack on the C: drive
*.INF files would be about on such a link C:\AMD\Win10-64Bit-Crimson-ReLive-Beta-Blockchain-Workloads-Aug11\Packages\Drivers\Display\WT6A_INF

Yes, per card.
What coin do you plan to mine? BIOS's modified? For ETH with forks, this will increase the hashrate.

Thank you very much.

- I plan to mine ETH and other (if possible right now).
- BIOS is not modified. I want to make the machine running and after that will get into performance enhancements and fine tuning.
