Title: [ATTENTION] TRC has been successfully forked
Post by: negerkolle on July 25, 2013, 09:45:48 AM
The last 24 hours TRC has been attacked and successfully forked. Difficulty is stuck at 5k, and someone is generating crazy amount of coins. Transactions do no longer work, and if you try to look in your client it will say it is 2 hours behind the network a lot of the time because of the huge amount of blocks that are being sent through.

I have tried contacting the exchanges to have them suspend TRC trading, but no answer. I recommend everyone who have coins on the exchanges to sell them or cancel your buy orders. When the  attackers start dumping their coins price will go to 0. If you are holding TRC outside the exchanges it is game over as you can not move them anywhere anymore.

BTC-e implemented 100 transaction confirms for TRC, as for FTC when they were attacked.

That is what I am saying, if you do not have coins on the exchanges you can kiss your money good bye. If you however have TRC on the exchange you should dump them right now and if you have buy orders you need to cancel before you buy worthless coins.

At coinotron, all coming blocks become orphans, without exceptions...

Yep, the attackers are orphaning all the blocks they do not mine themselves. Mining TRC right now is 100% waste of time. This coin is dead :(

We need checkpoint in block http://trc.cryptocoinexplorer.com/block/000000000000f0a91dd1b5db479092cd2f0fb9e664df66bf2f04734cfc4ec694

Not that other alt-coins are in better shape.
They aren't dead only because nobody bothered to attack them.

All of which was known before the launch so its not exactly news. The chance to crew a bunch of people out of a bunch of money is just too good to pass up though eh so likely we'll still see more launches.

What did the attacker gain by forking TRC?

What did the attacker gain by forking TRC?

Maybe some small increase in public awareness that these chains are not viable investments?

Blockchains are so insanely expensive to secure that trying to secure lots of them without even merging them is pretty stupid/pointless (except as scams to grab a fast buck, or course...)

What did the attacker gain by forking TRC?

The Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

I repeat THIS IS NOT A DRILL! THIS IS NOT A DRILL!

If you are lucky enough to have TRC at an exchange, dump now. It will be worthless by nightfall!

Waste of time coming up with new alt-coins to be attacked again and again.  next time if anyone wants to come out with a coin, make sure they had it protected, do not waste miners' times and hashing power.

Might not be the definition of a fork, but he is manipulating the chain and keeping all other blocks out of it. Basically corrupting the legit chain. What would you call it?

Doesn't really matter either way as the coin is dead no matter what you call the attack.

Quite funny as I decided to have a go at mining an SHA256 altcoin yesterday and chose TRC to play with, interesting lesson learned!

..now what to do with these 10 terracoins I mined  ;D

LOL I have 160 I have been to lazy to move to the exchanges. Anyone want them for 0.1BTC? Thats more than 50% less than what they are selling for at BTC-e right now.

Amazing the havoc a hobby miner with a CM1, 2 Lancelots and a block erupter can wreak!

(...)

It is not forked, damn noob. If there is a fork and attacker is on some illegal chain than you would not be able to see his transactions on explorer.
Or you are suggesting explorer uses illegal TRC wallet, the same one that attacker is using?

Learn how cryptocoins work, finaly.
Explorer is taking LONGER chain as legit. So because attacker is able to mine at 5k using lots of power and hacked client he have longer chain.
He is also almost solo mining this chain.
So, it is attacked and forked or not in your expert opinion? Because IMO he is killing coin and his fork should be cut out.

It is called soft-forking. Difference versus hard-forking is that there are no 2 different wallet rulesets but 2 different versions of the 1 chain.

LOL so you go off on some dude and call him noob because he said it was forked and now you admit it is "soft-forked".

I would recommend you use your leet-skillz to go to silkroad and buy yourself some shrooms, might make you a nicer person  ;)

This.

There is FORK, and there is HARD FORK.

Hard Fork is when it is incompatible with a previous version and breaks compatibility, or forked where it is compatible.

Soft-fork is nonsense, it should just be forked.

Added checkpoint
https://github.com/terracoin/terracoin/pull/11

Even if the community and exchanges adopted this checkpoint, wouldn't the attack be able to just restart his attacks at that point until/unless the client/wallet is fixed in regard to the 6+ hour issue?

I see they may be adding a checkpoint, but they  need to add a fix for the timewarp attack issue. I assume they can fix it the same way BTC did.

I think this way we kill this bug for good.

how's the situation? I moved some coins yesterday and I don't know where they ended up. they didn't hit the exchange account they were supposed to go to. Intially each trasfer had a different block number, today I see them all included in the same block number. what's the story? are they lost? is this going to be patched? updates?
