Title: Why do not people use sewgit address?
Post by: D5128FPJ on December 23, 2017, 10:09:28 AM
Now Bitcoin network is very congested.each block is only 1.05 MB(average).
Why do not people apply the sewgit address to alleviate this situation.

because majority of wallets have not yet implemented SegWit. i am not a core user (so correct me if i am wrong) but even in bitcoin core there is no "easy" way for regular users to create a SegWit address. in other words it is not as user friendly.
other major wallets like Coinbase, blobkchain.info and lots of desktop wallets have not yet released new versions to enable SegWit.

some of them that did release it like Electrum, it takes time for people to upgrade to those new versions.

and finally when you have funds in a regular (legacy?) address and you want to move to SegWit you need to transfer your funds, and that requires paying a huge fee based on the current mempool status.

I think the problem is that it is not as user friendly

Of course all people that are using Bitcoin wants to use segwit address to make transaction faster and at least to reduce high transaction fees (who does not want to experience it, right?), the only problem is that most of these Bitcoin wallet and exchanges still don't support segwit features until now, especially those wallet/exchanges that often used by Bitcoin users/investors. And there are only few wallet that I know that currently supporting it like trezor, ledger, and electrum. Some wallet will support segwit next year like blockchain.info.

it is also because people don't usually like change, and when it comes down to security and their money they became overly cautious. and SegWit has always been "optional" or as they call it "opt-in", which means you have to choose to use it...

I'm quite worried about that too, I think this is a huge brake in the development of Bitcoin, how long does will take to have SegWit and especially Lighting network, they have been talking about that for over a year  ???

The reason is very simple, people can not use something if service provider(wallets, exchanges) do not support it.Unfortunately almost all the wallets/services working on it quite slow and we do not see any bigger results. Two most famous hardware wallets Trezor and Ledger have support for SegWit for some time, and most used desktop wallet Electrum enabled SegWit in version 3,but this version have problem with Windows version 7&8.

There is a list of wallets/services on BitCore site but it is not updated for some time : https://bitcoincore.org/en/segwit_adoption/

I hope that we can see more support for SegWit in next year, and also Lightning Network. With this full enabled transaction should be fast&cheap.

Because people don't care about the future, when transaction fees were low a few weeks ago, people didn't consolidate their funds, and didn't bother moving to SegWit wallet, thinking that $0.5 fees are here to stay, even though we had spam attacks and congestions in this year. But users are not the only one to blame here - big services like Coinbase are the source of a big part of Bitcoin transaction traffic, so if they have implemented SegWit, fees would be lower for the whole network. And what is even worse, they don't batch transactions, which could reduce their withdrawal fees by 80-90% - at the same time they were actively pushing bigger blocks with B2X and now with Bcash. If this is not a direct attack on Bitcoin, I don't know what it is.

I've just moved back out of Segwit because its support is poor - I couldn't claim forks and airdrops with a segwit address in an Electrum or Ledger wallet so now I'm using Bitcoin Core to move back to non-Segwit addresses.
