Title: Connecting a new rig to another computer
Post by: Pm418 on December 24, 2017, 06:58:34 PM
I'm new to the building process in general, but I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I invest money into building a rig. I already parted out an existing computer I had sitting around and gave it a new GPU card and added another stick of ram. My original plan was to use it for video editing but while its not in use Ive been running it on nicehash and earning roughly $1.50 a day just on one GPU. The main concern im having isnt so much building the rig because ive watched alot of videos on the subject but how would I go about connecting the new rig to the computer/ monitor that i already have sitting around. Any insight would be greatly appreciated

are you asking about remote access for your rig ? so you can control your RIG from another computer ?

Yes I’m trying to have everything set up to one monitor I have a computer I’m using to mine right now but I wasn’t sure how to pair the rig up to the other computer. Would it just be an Ethernet cable or some other kind of hdmi connection? Also do I need to buy Microsoft 10 for the rig or could I just clone my os over onto the ssd drive. I plan on using 6gpus and the rig hasn’t been built yet I’m just asking out of speculation.

if you want your rig and your computer on the same monitor , then make sure your monitor have a least 2 input :)

Since mining rig does not need much work on it after setup, so why not you just use remote desktop or vnc to access to it from another computer?

Go to the simplemining thread and  see if you like it.

You use a usb 3.0 stick and his modded Linux to mine.

He charge zero for a download and you can test for a week for free.

The rig is a mining rig and nothing else.

You can access the rig anywhere in the world using one of your emails on the simplemining.net  website.

just use teamviewer, with lan connection not connection to their server, and you are done, and yes better to buy another cheap copy at ebay of windows 10

Agree with Teamviewer. Easiest and simplest to use. Just install and run to access multiple computers remotely.

With regards to windows 10 i don't believe you need to clone or even get a cheap copy on ebay. Windows 10 can be downloaded for free from the microsoft website directly. Given that you don't mind seeing an annoying watermark saying "please activate windows," it should work normally without problems.

or do it my way.

cost zero for download.

2 bucks a month if you do stick with smos.

10 -  15 bucks for a usb 3.0 stick

So just to be clear the only thing the rig needs to communicate with the computer is a lan cable? When I first installed the Gpu into the computer the display wasn’t showing up so I bought an hdmi to dvi conversion cable and that fixed the problem. Would I need to hook up one of the gpus from the rig to the old desktop or are those just for the monitor?

I just use ssh terminal for remote control of my mining rigs (both my rigs and desktop computer use Linux).
I mostly use CLI in a terminal window.

If I still want GUI I use x2go for remote Linux desktop.
