Title: Gpu/CPU mining with same machine
Post by: Lostpike on December 25, 2017, 05:03:08 PM
Building a 6 gpu setup and had a thought.  It doesn't really use the CPU to mine so I wonder if I picked up one of those new Ryzens that are able to CPU mine some things and mined with both would this effect or lower my mining on my you?

CPU mining has very little to no effect on most GPU miners.

Most of my GPU rigs do Monero mining.
The ones that aren't are mostly working the YOYO project at BOINC for now, because I haven't "converted" them yet.
They're almost all converted from FAH work, where the CPU mattered and PCI-E bus throughput made a big difference, so the 8320e on most of them is severe overkill for a pure mining rig.

Running older ETH miners that didn't do the DAG on the GPU would bog the CPU side down a lot - about once every 3 days ballpark - for a few minutes, that's about the only place I could see CPU mining affecting GPU mining noticeably.

I am mining on some really old hardware and using the CPU as well as the video card to mine.  While the CPU has 8 threads I only utilize 6 threads.  if I intend to the use the computer then I use 4 threads.  When I try to use all the threads for my system then my system ends up getting locked up.  Other than that I do alright.

Good afternoon, perhaps you should try mining the KALKULUS coin at the moment, it has low complexity and it is easily extracted. Based on information from developers, it should be promising in 2018.

CPU mining is not really worth it. Unless you make a bet on the coin raising in value alot. It does not effect the GPU by that much, i get around 2% decrease in hashes. On the other note, i mine Electroneum. I like mining with the CPU, not for profit but its always nice to get a new coin.  ;D

My opinion is that unless you can configure (with the miner software or some other method) the amount of threads dedicated to mining, it may not be worth it because you would end up with decreased hash rates from your GPU mining but more than that you could end up burning your CPU. The amount it mines is little anyway so why risk it.

You need money to make money. Invest more in GPUs if you want more profits.

I'm also mining ETN with the CPU on my mining rig. For the first couple of weeks after the release I sold the coins for profit. After that I kept the coins as a bet on its long term prospect.

BiblePay (BBP) is fairly new CPU Only mining coin, 10% of mined coins go to Charity, project is already sponsoring 180+ Orphans monthly

It's an interesting test, I believe you should not have issues as information runs through completely different buses
