Title: Claiming Bitcoin Cash BCH
Post by: puntylane on December 26, 2017, 06:13:09 PM
Hi

I hold BTC via an Electrum wallet, held for several years ie before the bitcoin cash(BCH) hard fork

in the process of creating a Bitcoin Core - Wallet to hold the BCH, currently Synchronising

Can you advise the steps to claim the BCH via me existing BTC Electrum wallet and the new Bitcion Core wallet?

Help would be appreciated

Thanks!

I tried that route, but it did not work. Went to Coinomi for the BTH retrieval. Installed a fresh copy of electrum on another computer, moved all the BTC from the old electrum wallet to the new.

Then export the private keys (now empty, no risk) and enter into coinomi one by one.

Why are you download Bitcoin Core to "claim the BCH"? Bitcoin Core is only for Bitcoin.

If you want to spend the BCH from your old Electrum wallet, you just need to download Electron Cash[1] (Electrum fork for BCH), and open your Electrum wallet with it. Simple as that.

I found it extremely easy to download and install ElectronCash for BCH.  Make sure to do a gpg sig verification using the jonaldkey2 to make sure you get the "real deal".   It looks and works almost exactly the same as Electrum.  I did the setup via my Trezors and was able to keep the same SEED for both "coins" in my hardware wallet.  Currently the BitcoinCash chain is confirming transactions quickly and CHEAP.  I have had no issues at all.  Just claim your BCH using the same/original passphrase in a temp wallet using ElectronCash.  These addresses will match your BTC addresses exactly if you don't change the derivation path.  Then create a new wallet and different passphrase with the new "145" derivation path to completely disassociate your coins from your original BTC.  Now send your coins to your new BCH addresses wallet, and you can now delete your temp wallet (after seeing confirmations of course - its fast on this chain).  So easy!  If you don't have a Trezor you will need to add a couple of steps so that the BCH chain never sees the private keys to your original BTC addresses before you MOVE the BTC to a new wallet.  Remember your addresses are an exact match when you start since the BCH chain is literally a "snapshot" of BTC when BitcoinCash started out.  This is easy, just be careful.  Again. Trezors make this so easy to do.
