Why does this matter, seems completely arbitrary

OP guesses we are beginning another bubble and is restarting the parity thread from March and April.

It matters because it's a reason to celebrate!

Isn't the amount of gold in the USA unknown because some fort won't submit to an audit? Maybe I should be using the conspiracy theory tag...

Celebrate, why? It's completely arbitrary.

Why did you invite me to this birthday party? Celebrating the earth going around the sun 21 times seems completely arbitrary

Is this just more happy people garbage?

Yeah, measuring things is dumb.

Cool thread ... gonna watch this.

Also lots of good points being made about "gold reserves" and proven physical gold bricks ... CB "gold reserves" can mean lots of things, like swap notes from bullion banks who have leased out the gold and sold it short, "deep storage gold" that is an obligation from an African mining operation in a war-torn country that one day it is going to dig some gold out of the ground (honest) ... and finally the Fed Reserve Bank of New York 'gold reserves' that take 7 years to deliver, um, yes, well maybe  ... and etc.

No need to post in or read this thread if you aren't interested...  No, it doesn't matter, but since when do humans only do things that matter?

I think it's neat to say "Bitcoins are now worth more than all the gold reserves in [COUNTRY]".

19.08.13: Iraq and Nepal are in rear view mirror! Only 50 countries have gold reserves larger than Bitcoin capitalization! Watching Slovakia now.

Goodbye Nepal! Have a great gold parity pary!

Gold parity is an interesting measuring stick to compare to Bitcoin, actually, since they're both limited stores of value. But then again, it's no 1-to-1 with countries comparison like the GDP chart on the web. Currently the Bitcoin market = 1/40th of the top gold reserve holder, the USA.

Thanks for this cheery thread, V.

It's fun how the parity game (gold or M1) doesn't stop at the USA or Japan, before that stage you can throw combination parity into the mix. For instance, right now Bitcoin has the equivalent gold parity with the summation of gold reserves of Kyrgyzstan, Canada, Slovenia, Aruba, Hungary, Bosnia, Luxembourg, Hong Kong, Iceland, Papua New Guinea, Trinidad, Albania and Yemen combined.  8)

Question is, when will these countries start holding reserves in Bitcoin?

Maybe some already secretly do.

Not anytime soon. If BTC becomes mainstream they might consider holding some.
Until then, if some high ranking official would approve such a move, he could get in jail.
