Title: Litecoin Mining Rig Build
Post by: AsicRich on August 01, 2013, 11:26:52 PM
Basic Build Info:

I'm building a Litecoin mining rig with 5/6 7950 GPUs for fun and to get involved with mining. I do not expect to make much from this. Most of the stuff was paid for with Amazon gift certificates. About $300 of it is out of pocket. I've ordered and received most of the parts including the motherboard, PSU, 4 GPUs, 4 GPU risers (2 1x and 2 16x), CPU, RAM, HD, large tech tray case, and the OS. I have 4 120mm 75 CFM fans and a Kill A Watt surge protector on order that should arrive tomorrow or Saturday. I'm going to be building most of it today and taking pics which I will update my threads with later tonight. I'm also planning to do something interesting with an arduino board and LEDs. More to come about that. Here is a link to my original thread: http://www.exploitn.com/threads/ltc-mining-rig-build.17648/.

Seems a little expensive for the hashrate you're getting.

Resale value exists though  :)

Diggin' the tray case, far out man.

I forgot to mention in the op that I'm doing this for fun and to get involved in mining. I also forgot to mention that I paid for all but $300 of this with Amazon gift certificates, so it didn't cost me much out of pocket. I will add that info to the op. I realize that I probably won't make much from this rig. If the numbers are right I might build another one. I'm hoping for an increase in the value of LTC as well. Imagine if you mined 1,000 LT, held onto it, and the coin value went up to $100 per coin. Will I get lucky? I doubt it, but who knows.

I love the case too! Thank you. There's a link to where I got it in the parts list. I saw this dudes custom cases and I had to buy one. The ordering process is sketchy, like "send me Paypal and I promise I'll ship it", but I figured I could always charge-back if he didn't ship it. The build quality is solid. I'm glad I gave him a shot. I'm very happy with it.

Damn...$97 for a case.

I bought a plastic milk crate off Amazon for $11 and it hasn't failed me yet  :)

The case was part of the $300 or so I payed out of pocket. It's one of the parts of this build I plan to reuse.

Wow

you realize for $300 you can buy a brand new sapphire Dual-x 7970 right? Or for a few more dollars a 7970 vapor-x if you prefer that.

Where?

go on slickdeals.net and search 7970 or 7950 on a daily basis and you will see a ton of cards for cheap. They just ended / extended a rebate so the next iteration of deals is coming soon.

So far recently the best deals I have seen are 7950 Sapphire dual-x for $239 and 7970 for $298.

$200 7950 for black friday I would assume, $250 7970 maybe.

I used Amazon gift certificates, as stated in the op. I had to get most of the stuff on Amazon, which was conveniently the best prices I could find anyway. I didn't pay anything for them really, I like $0 more. Please link where I can buy a 7970 for $300 and a 7950 for $239.

I'm just avoiding hassles for now. If I can find another location to run it at I will end up using Linux and running a server so that I can access it remotely.

Tigerdirect has a 7950 for $220. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8078201&SRCCODE=LINKSHARE&cm_mmc_o=-ddCjC1bELltzywCjC-d2CjCdwwp&AffiliateID=Es5Ekr9eEBk-KHYrWD1n7.Ly1BOioD6S3g

And a few days ago, NCIX had a 7970 for $300. http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=70111&usaffiliateid=1000031503

I've honestly been buying the 6970s as they can be had pretty cheaply and still get 500+ kh/s

Any idea if those are voltage unlocked? I need voltage unlocked GPUs so that I can undervolt them. I need to undervolt them to be able to run 6 of them on 1 1600 watt power supply. I might have been able to get Amazon to price match. I had to buy most of the stuff through Amazon. I still need to buy 2 more 7950 at some point in the near future.

Got my first GPU set up and hashing with decent rates finally. It took a lot of tweaking settings to get this 7950 up to 600 kh. Without the air conditioner it was pushing 65 degrees, with the air conditioner it's at 55 degrees.

I believe those MSI cards do best at 1050/1250
