It goes this way: scammer says send the full BTC amount first. Being smart, you refuse and insist on using escrow. Scammer (furious now that he can’t boss you around for the full amount) desperately tries to save the day and will now do and say anything to extract some coins from you, even a few bucks to pay for his Mac burger or pizza so he says ok pay half first and pay the rest later. The scammer then disappears with that 50% incremental payment.
