Bitcoin rises after report says early Facebook investor Peter Thiel is buying massive amounts

Peter Thiel's Founders Fund has bought millions of dollars in bitcoin, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the situation.
Those holdings are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, the newspaper says. It wasn't clear whether Founders had sold any of its holdings, the report says.
Bitcoin rises more than 11 percent to trade near $14,711, according to Coinbase.

That's sweet! Bitcoin's price is standing at an optimum low level and it is expected that people will start investing in it again. The price had decreased due to the festive season as a lot of investors sold off their holding to meet the festival expenses. Now since the festive season is over, a majority of such investors  are expected to come back to the market. So when we see a single investor is investing this much amount of money, it's the cherry on the top of the cake. Bitcoin price is already showing signs of recovery. It's time to cheer again.

I was wondering what gave rise to BTC in this alt season of runs but that makes more sense now. Don't think it is enough to turn the tide of course but good to know there is tons of confidence in bitcoin still despite the almost 50% retrace it did in these past few weeks.

This is really good news and shows that the mega rich are aware of bitcoin's solid fundamentals. Thiel would not have invested that much in the cryptocurrency unless he believed a massive jump is ahead.

That is nice, i agree. But the price didn't dumped by more than four thousand dollars just because a few investors decided to sell all their earnings.


He invested a LOT of money, not a little amount of money, and you should not forget that he is a famous person and he can easily manipulate the price.

Woah, I'm wondering the same as you thought here. In this case, I don't know, whether it's good or bad for Bitcoin itself. However, a price rise is still a rise for Bitcoin. Let's crossed our fingers and hoping for the best (it might take time, but eventually it will climb up to the top of hill again)

A huge risk in my opinion, but he definitely just shifted the market. I guess he saw a great opening while we were hovering at that 13000-14000 zone and went for it. Regardless, I have a hunch that his buying is what spiked the btc price today. Seems like people are starting to follow him because they've been given some confidence about the coin.

The more the whales come up and keep buying, the more the average guy starts buying. With that we'll see some price rises if more influential people put their big bucks in.

He bought over the summer. And will dump 100's of millions of dollars worth as soon as his firm deems its in the best interest of his customers.

That's interesting. The price has been stuck to around $13,000 the past few days so I was wondering why the price surged a bit. I thought it was just Bitcoin's volatility at work, but it looks like we have definitive proof that someone moved the market. We can't say anything for certain because we don't have exact numbers, but if we were to credit this purchase for increasing Bitcoin's price by 11%, then that means all it took for someone to move the price by that much was to buy around 1,500 worth of coins. I know things don't necessarily work the same way the other way around, but it's ridiculous how such a small amount can move the market.

Good publicity either way though. Great way to start the year.

It shows that still there is a growth on bitcoin and probably it will reach next record high soon, huge investment at this stage indicates there is good news on bitcoin ahead . i hope it i will be great to know that there is some improvement.

This news is a much required boost for Bitcoin price. Hopefully, there will be a consolidation and bitcoin will be able to hold the support level at around $14900 else we will return to it oscillating between $13000 and $14000 again.

Good for him. I wish I had that kind of money at my disposal, I would buy a whole lot of coins. Lucky are the right, they can only get richer.

...And Peter Thiel is known to be smart with money, so bully on him for buying. 

However, I don't fully see the relevance that these types of news reports have to any personal investing.  Whether Warren Buffett hates bitcoin or Thiel loves it, it makes little difference to my purchasing habits.  I love bitcoin and the rest of the world can take a long walk off a short pier for all I care.  He probably is responsible for the market going up, and I do thank him for that. As they say, a rising tide lifts all ships.

Good and wise investors always take advantage of good business when they find it lucrative ,although some who have already made a lot of money in there portfolio also want to just have bitcoin as there part of investment not really for profit but fame.

news like this is always around. there is always someone who is saying they bought shitload of bitcoin and someone else who is saying stay away from bitcoin it is bullshit. and NONE of these have ever been the initiator of neither a rise nor a fall. however they increase the size of each movement though because for example when the rise starts and then the news comes out the FOMO buyers start buying.

and 10% is a joke. bitcoin has been in this area for some time now. if it went up more and broke $16500 in the first wave then i would have agreed this is the news. otherwise it is the same pattern as always.:
big rise > small correction > FUD+panic > big correction > despair in market while wise people accumulate > small recovery > testing resistances > small fall > test again 2 or 3 times > rise > break out > new ATH.
it just happens that right after the small correction when the FUD has to begin the news about Jamie Dimon calling bitcoin fraud comes out and when the rise leading to break out has to begin the news about Peter Thiel buying bitcoin comes out.

This might be the news boosting bitcoin's price in the new year. Bitcoins has been stable around the $14k level and this news might boost its price to some extent. I am eagerly waiting to see some movement in bitcoin's price.

I searched facebook and saw this news. Now I already know that it is all about a big time investor buying a big load of bitcoins. So that is the reason why there is an increase in the price. At least there is some big investor who noticed the opportunity you can get in cryptocurrency. Hope other whales will also follow these investments.

That's very good to know that Bitcoin still dominating the cryptocurrencies and also good to know that the price of Bitcoin became higher since it's been low for few days already.  I hope it will regain the momentum again of the Bitcoin by reaching the higher price this month.  ;)

Big news that a Peter Thiel invested.  He is very influential person.  Hopefully more like him will follow.  Warren finally came around to investing in Apple and I’m sure he is happy now.   :)

He's always been a good investor in stuff, probably will be investing into altcoins. Excited to see more and more news come out about this and big players entering the game. Maybe he has even more locked up, but the media just doesn't know about it? (probably)

What a nice and good welcome for our New Year, I knew it that bitcoin will have a good come back by some people who will buy bitcoin and will make the price go up again.

People like Peter Thiel will attract other investors to make the same move of buying bitcoin, let's wait for them to come.
