Title: blockchain for car parts authenticity verification
Post by: tapas01 on January 08, 2018, 11:19:23 AM
How to build a blockchain based application to verify that car parts are authentic. There could be a public or private blockchain in which the manufacturers, distributors, retailers could input the details of the flow of parts through the supply chain. The customers like car owners or mechanics could scan a QR code to access the information and verify if the part is authentic/genuine or not.

I would like to ask you is there a better way of doing this? What would you suggest for such an application?

I don't think there is a better way of doing this. Bigchain DB has listed a few use cases of Blockchain in the automotive sector. Automotive parts provenance and tracking is one of them. Similar to what you have suggested, assigning a unique ID for each and every part at the time of creation and recorded along with immutable timestamps. This data can be made available to the owner of the vehicle to verify which parts have been replaced, to the manufacturer to efficiently execute recalls, or to the service center to know when a part has reached its usage limit. Yeah like a QR code, crypto-enabled tags that speak directly to the Blockchain can be embedded directly into the part to add another layer of authenticity protection.
From mitigating reputational damages from counterfeit spare parts to cutting down expenses to streamlining supply chain process to fully autonomous cars, the automotive industry can accomplish a lot by embracing Blockchain technology.

Agree with you completely. What do you think , will all part manufactures would want a private blockchain only for themselves or do you think there would be comfortable being part of a single platform which is used commonly by all part manufacturers?

its a good idea but possibly open to fraud [which is exactly that your want to eliminate] because of the fact that you would be dealing with something physical!
in a seperate but king of related topic Bosch are doing something similar already with their odometer's ?
it looks like they and possibly other multinational giants are working away on blockchain and IOT

That's actually quite a cool application of blockchain. Could it be applied to monitor other mechanical wear or even automotive applications (oil changes, service history or wear life relating to engine revs). And how about tachographs? :)

tachographs would be an excellent one all right.
what is needed for tachographs is a tamper proof solution and the blockchain can provide that.
The wear life would tie back to the OP's question regarding car parts.
