Title: 8-12% Stale Shares - Satellite Internet
Post by: clipboard88 on January 09, 2018, 09:14:10 PM
I have a small mining setup in a remote location where power is on a much cheaper industrial rate. My only access to internet is Satellite or Verizon LTE. Luckily there was already an existing ViaSat (satellite internet) account onsite that I've been allowed to use. Ping times to us1.ethermine.org range between 600-650ms. I've got 6 different rigs, each running Claymore 10.2 (upgrading to 10.3 today). Each mining client shows less than 1 rejected share per day in Claymore. However, on ethermine.org, it reports 8-12% of shares are "stale" (for each rig).

Other than switching to a Verizon source internet signal, is there something that I can change in my configuration to help reduce stale shares? I've done a ping test on each of pools that are shown in the configuration example of Claymore and all show 600+ms. I've also checked us1,us2, ect for each pool shown.

EDIT: To be clear, I've only tested mining to ethermine pool. Would it be worth it to test another pool even though the ping times are similar?

sat internet is horrible for mining, doubt there is anything you can do short of getting better internet, something wired preferably. Id bet any pool you connect too you are going to have around that much stale shares

Thank you for the response. I was afraid that it may just be part of mining at that location. The phone lines for the building aren't strong enough for the weakest version of DSL, and the nearest cable connection is a few miles away. I connected my laptop to a cell phone hot spot this past weekend on-site and saw ping times of 80-85ms. Prior to going down that road (buying a data plan/LTE router) I wanted to check in to see if anyone had any suggestions to try. I'm not looking forward to calculating the data needs and paying that monthly bill!  :'(

Just sayin

Well, the rigs hardly use any data so you can use a very, very cheap data plan.

You can even get free data from places like freedompop. That said, a prepaid VZW hotspot will hardly cost you anything since having more than 1-2 gb of data per month probably doesn't matter.

Yeah;  That's the rub with talking to satellites;  the delay up and back, twice.

So;

Try lowering your difficulty manually.  Slowly.  You need to find the very edge of getting enough shares at a lower diff to compensate for the shares that come in stale....   You minimize your loss.

If at all possible switch to cellular.  It's about 1500-2000ms faster.

For instance, I use t-mobile here in the US with a prepaid unlimited data cellular plan.  The sim card is in a USB adaptor with a GOBI2000 installed.  That machine runs linux and wraps the internet connection in a VPN tunnel to hide the other devices behind the connection.  That machine is my main router at home, and my main VPN gateway is a raspberry Pi at the end of a very high speed cable internet link.

I am using LTE router for 6 mining rigs and i don't have any stale shares.. It's true, that the internet speed is 20Mb/s or higher..

If you don't mind me asking what router?

Im looking for hackable devices so I can step up from HSPA to LTE.  GSM of course.

For the IMEI on this non-LTE GOBI2000 device;  its unknown in their database so they treat it as an unknown clone phone.   This is how I get unlimited internet for $88/mo....  But the 3G band will only be around for so long with them... and they are one of the few that actually can get reception/bandwidth in my area.   Kinda rural surrtounded by hills/terrain.
