Title: Should I be using MetaMask?
Post by: Phriend on January 11, 2018, 02:43:46 PM
I'm a newbie with some technical skills, but not a lot.
Should I be using MetaMask for added security?
What does MetaMask do for me, exactly?

Also, MetaMask seems to only work for Ethereum-based coins.  Is there an extension like MetaMask available for the other coins?

I don't have too much experience with Ethereum or tokens but here's my view. I just moved from MEW to Metamask and it's so much nicer to use. I was using exodus for eth but it doesn't support enough ECR-20 tokens so I went in search of something that did. I don't want to pay the daft ledger nano price so Metamask is my choice atm and I like it.

Isn't MEW more secure though?  I mean, if you create an offline paper wallet using MEW...

MM is only for ETH + ERC20 tokens. Offline wallets are ALWAYS more secure than a wallet connected to the internet. Be sure to keep your key in a safe place, such as Lastpass. Nice thing about MM is it's ready to go for decentralized web apps and works across other browsers than Chrome such as Firefox, Opera and Brave. You can also run the same wallet in both MEW & MM. I'm not aware of a browser wallet for non-ERC20 so I'd recommend using a versatile wallet such as Jaxx, Exodus or others out there if that's your requirement, or use multiple wallet apps for different coins as no wallet handles all 1400+ cryptos and tokens.

I use it and like how user-friendly it is - you can try it out, it's really easy to install (add on to browser)

Meta mask is a good measure to safe ourself from phishing attack which is a big and common way of stealing your money. It automatically block bad links and save u from being robbed

MetaMask is a better way to access your ERC20 tokens as it has extra layers of security though I'm not entirely sure what they are. But either way, use MetaMask especially since it can be installed as a plugin and is easily accessible.

While offline paper wallets are secure, you will still need to some level of online interaction when you need to carry out a transaction that is where metamask comes in.  Metamask provides you a platform to access your MEW wallet with the added provision of security from being phished of your private key.

I established it very simply as a google extension. As etherdelta exchange still can not be trusted, it feels safer to sign purchases via matemask.

my opinion is...
whatever security system used, all back to us.
But, for me.... i think Json is enough to maintain security.
with a note, we use the computer / laptop personally. Not to everyone.

As for the other coins, I do not know, but this application helps to avoid getting into phishing sites, which is very important if you do not want to lose your money.

I also recently went to the MEW and saw warnings that (Keystone / JSON File) is not 100% safe, although before this was not.
I generally trust the JSON file that I have on the flash drive.
And to install some add-on in the browser, how can it be more secure?
I even read a few cases that wallets were hacked through MM

Yes you should, one need to take every precautions possible alot of people are losing their funds to all these phishing site and meta mask help with that, I don't think there is any for now application for other coins that serve the purpose metamask is doing for ethereum wallet

Yes you can use Meta Mask for your better security. Meta Mask is very easy to use and it is help you for your account security and if you want to buy and sell altcoin no need to use your privet key on Etherdelta so you can use Meta Mask.

yes, you have to use metamask, do you remember a while ago DNS etherdelta hacked? many people who then followed the bounty campaign, wallet claimed dihack, right or wrong, when everything is like this, they all ask the bounty manager to change their wallet address and it is very slow the process of counting bounty. the bounty manager also suggested to use metamask.

If you want more security, just avoid using MetaMask, you can easily lost all your funds if you get hacked or spoofed.
I'm a newbie with some technical skills, but not a lot.Should I be using MetaMask for added security?

If you really care about your security, just invest $70 in a ledger wallet, and use one of the addreses that it provides to you.

By this way, you can attach your MEW to your ledger, and there is no way that someone can still hack your coins or just stole them from you.

Take my advice, you will remember my words, do not use metamask.

Metamask is more secure than MEW. If you'll actually notice the announcements and notifications on MEW they DO NOT recommend simply using MEW with your private keys. The best thing to do, according to MEW, would be to use a third party tool like Metamask. They already explicitly say it.

From my experience, i've been loving metamask as well. Its simple to use and easily lets you configure GWEI price.

Metamask are very good and safest ways to access your wallet on MEW (Erc20).
you can Install it from google chrome extensions.
because with that app , you can access your wallet without put your Private key.
so this is way can avoid us from phising or the other method of hacking

well i guess . metamask is much safer than MyEtherWallet.
and may be you need to learn more about metamask.
but i guess for beginner try MyEtherWallet just safely store your Privatekey

I never use metamask, just using mew. For security as long as you don't open phishing website, I think it always save. And never try to open 'mew link' from anyweb, I always open it from my bookmark and until now I still save.

If you only have several coins, I think it is OK to keep everywhere.
If you have some coins, I think it is convenient to use the online wallet.
If you have a lot of coins, I think it is advisable to keep in the hard wallet.

I personally want to buy a computer and use it just to store offline wallets, or will get some nanos and trezors but to be honest, I am waiting for the ethos wallet to happen as that will hold all our coins in a secure vault, will almost be like a crypto wallet/bank, so am trying to be patient for that. I opened many MEW addresses, not just one wallet to divide my coins and am looking at metamask also. I am not very technical but am looking at security, also exchanges I always use 2fa now.

Of course it's worth using metamasque, because it can save a little from hackers and other kind of wicked people, now they very strongly began to use various tricks to empty your wallets.

Yes, you should use metamask it is suggested by some exchangers like etherdelta, because their exchangers are so laggy so for your safety better use metamask for the safety of your ethereum balances or tokens. You should just import your private key when you start to use it. Ive already use it many times and im satisfied with its service.

Metamask is cool and easy to use... I like the fact that it has a lot of ERC20 token options and smartly integrates with Ether Delta to trade. MEW is also a very useful wallet for ERC20 tokens.

MetaMask is for securing ERC20 supported wallets and can make you comfortable using the site for trading and holding. It allows you to easily access dAPP with the use of the private key and allows you to visit the ethereum sites. Also, metamask make it more accessible and more secured for all the users of ethereum. This plugin can also interact in the ethereum blockchain which is very convenient and interact with different smart contracts.

Yup, metamask is better than MEW because it offer more layer of security to your wallet, it also works for erc20 tokens and there's tons of them on the market so it's a big plus. Other coin that doesn't use ethereum blockchain has different official wallet and I don't think there's one for that, even hardware wallet like nano ledger s doesn't support all token but only some famous one.

You definitely should use Metamask or some kind of cold storage wallets. I was using MyEtherWallet for a while and I've been hacked recently, so I lost all my valuable tokens. Don't ignore the security, it is especially important in crypto world.

Of course you need to use extensions like Metamasc. You can not enter a private key from your MEW to get full access to the purse, for example. Save your money if MEW is hacked! (That already happened 2 weeks ago)

- Anti-theft key log
- Unlock MyEtherWallet.com quick, click open

you must always use Metamask where its required.
I am mostly using Metamask while I trade on ETH based DEX like etherdelta, etc.
Pros of using metamask:
Your private key remains with you in your browser and is never shared with exchanges.
Usually they have a list of phishing websites maintained under radar, so if you mistakenly visit any sch website, it warns you and save you from getting hacked.

Cons:
Only for ETH based tokens
Do not have 2FA

Yes, you should use it!

MetaMask is more than just an Ether wallet. It's an Ethereum Browser, like Mist! It allows you all the same functions, features, and ease of access from regular Ethereum Wallets, and it allows you to interact with Dapps and Smart Contracts, and all without the need to download the blockchain or install any software, you can just install it as a Google Chrome Extension! Plus, it has a cool fox logo that follows your mouse around, which made us smile.

MetaMask includes a secure identity vault, providing a user interface to manage your identities on different sites and sign blockchain transactions.

Its definitely a good step in the right direction to use metamask because, it dosen't only serve as a wallet, but it protects you from phishing websites.

I use metamask to trade on Idex and Etherdelta as it protects my wallet. Some sites would ask you to provide your private keys but with metamask, you can use it in such sites if you are trading an an ERC20 token.

Metamask is useful in case of keyloger atack. But in case of using other softwares it wouldn't help you. Be careful and everything will be good with you and your earnings. It is the only, that can really save it.

With MetaMask, you can send the eth without entering a private key on the official MEW website.
MetaMask also helps you track transactions and tokens.
With it, you can access the MEW website without entering a password from your wallet.

When using any wallet, one must be guided by common sense and security policy. And then your coins will be all right. Metamask is a good wallet. But if you do something stupid in terms of security, then it will not protect your savings.

Should I be using MetaMask for added security?
What does MetaMask do for me, exactly?

Also, MetaMask seems to only work for Ethereum-based coins.  Is there an extension like MetaMask available for the other coins?

Be sure to use MetaMask when trading on EthreDelta. This will keep your coins safe!

Yes. There are more citizens in bitcoin that believe to use metamask is one of the safety to use. I guess it is true because not only one person who says that but they are more. You can try to use it then if you don't like how it works then change your wallet.

Metamask is one of the great ways to store ETH and ERC-20 tokens. Metamask is also recommended by Myetherwallet to ensure the safety of everyone's property. Its security feature is very good, anti-stealing private key when logging in and when you visit the fake sites it will have red alert to help you avoid being cheated. In addition, you can also easily unlock your MyEtherWallet with Metamask and can create multiple wallet addresses. I think you should use it. This is just my advice

Metamask is only designed for Ethereum wallet. It is an added security so yu don't have to put your private key on a decentralize trading platform like Etherdelta.  I only use it for trading purposes but i do not use it for storing my Ethereum token.

I am also using myetherwallet because I have secured my altcoins differently. Afcorsee, if you are scared because of the possible theft the MetaMask is the best solution for you but even with it, the hacker can steal your money if he is smart and consistent enough. I would recommend it although I ain't using it. It is also highly advertised over the network and also the newbies in the crypto field had heard about it. Some don't use it and also ain't securing their wallets with the back software or hardware wallets and some of them had experienced the loss of their portfolio because of the laziness to secure it properly.

Hi guy, As I hear some people say that that MetaMask is probably a big hit wallet which is used online by connecting  computer to internet right  now. But I’ve never ever used this wallet, I think that it is less secure than MEW. Now I am still using MEW, because I think that MEW is one of the most ways that keep our coins in secure way.

Metamask adds extra protection than merely using MEW, or having passphrase as a way of opening you MEW. Some incidents happened that MEW was compromised, in the sense that websites were made to re direct you to fake and phishing websites. So i'd say for ERC-20 tokens, metamask is a better choice and you can handle multiple eth wallets too.

You should use MetaMask because it provides very good protection against theft of money. Each additional protection of the wallet is most desirable to protect against theft.

Yes, you are right, the MetaMask is used only for coins based on the Ethereum.
Perhaps in the future it will be possible to generate or attach already existing other wallets.
I have a lot of wallets. Each of them has a different purpose. Not all wallets I have online and not all are tied to MetaMask. However, I use MetaMask always when login on decentralized exchanges. This fox warns about phishing sites. Also, passwords are already stored inside and there is no need to enter the password every time from the wallet.

Myetherwallet and meta mast are the best. Alternatively you can use coinbase wallet for erc20 tokens they have recently launched. I have never tried Eidoo, their wallet also supports ERC20 tokens but reviews on them are not good. There is no need to trying other if you are on MEW/Metamask

Metamask is really the most reliable way to manage your crypto wallets. It's rather hard to hack despite the Myetherwallet. But the most secure way is probably to obtain hardwallet like TREZOR or Ledger. That will be the best way to keep your crypto save.
