Title: Are Intel ULV processors for laptops any good? Help me pick one.
Post by: PrintMule on August 13, 2013, 02:32:26 PM
A friend of a friend has asked me to pick a laptop for her. I have plenty experience with desktops, but close to none when it comes to laptops/tablets.
Lets say we have:

Core i3-3110M    2.4 GHz  HD Graphics 4000   TDP 35 W
Core i3-3217U    1.8 GHz  HD Graphics 4000   TDP 17 W
Core i5-3210M    2.5 GHz HD Graphics 4000   TDP 35 W
Core i5-3317U    1.7 GHz  HD Graphics 4000   TDP 17 W

If choosing between i3 M and i5 M i would probably choose i3, cause difference is not that big, except for turbo boost. But if choosing between i3 U and i5 U, turbo boost probably might come in very handy.

Thing is - 1.8 Ghz sounds really small. I do not expect her to play crysis, moreover, I saw a video of MW3 on i3 3217u  at youtube, but still. How many Ghz do you need?
If I take i3 U laptop with 15' display and stick 8gb ram and SSD into it, will it feel blazing fast or not? Or do we need a turbo boost? Or both will suck, and we need M version.

Usage scenario = "heavy browsing" (30 open tabs, youtube HD playback), MKV 1080p playback, photoshop sitting in the background.

Thanks in advance.

800$, but our prices are AT LEAST 30% higher than US prices, keep that in mind

If i3 Ivy Bridge U will be good enough for photoshop and multitasking, then that's enough

you should get the 4th gen i3.. battery life is amazingly long and it is definitely enough power to do what she wants. with an SSD drive on windows 8, it should load in about 6 or 7 seconds. that's blazing fast to me.

Thanks for the timely response, this thread is only starting to rot, no worries there. (3 months old, lol)

We went for i3 U and it's awesome. Also laptop's light weight is a big plus for my gf.
