Title: Other uses for Asics if not to mine cryptocurrencies ?
Post by: dyseac on August 14, 2013, 03:26:27 AM
So,

As a batch#3 avalon owner, I have come to the realization I will more than likely never make my ROI, and unless bitcoins increase several orders of magnitude the likely outcome will be to turn it off in the next few months.

What else can all of this hashing power be used for? Search for ET? Brute forcing things?

I know it will probably make a nice museum piece in another 1000 years but other than that... any suggestions? :)

Cannot be used for anything else but mining sha256 coins.

Novel uses: doorstop, paperweight, bookends, boat anchor.

Use PSUs, fans, sinks, cases for other projects.

De-solder the Avalon chips, make pendants or bracelets  ;)

If you do end up unplugging the device you should send it here.
I have unlimited free electricity and could send you BTC still!

Just putting that out there.. I'm gonna run my USB Miners until the day they explode.. Because they are neat and that is their purpose!

I'm gonna run mine (on something) until the day they die, my PC is on anyways...

Correct me if my thinking is off, but isn't it possible there will just be another SHA-256 coin that becomes more profitable to mine?

Might be able to sell it to others that are overpaying for it.  Other than that not sure.

You can use it as an electric heater to warm up your house during the winter.
Its 620W power usage happens to be a good value for that purpose. Unlike BFL asics that with their 100W wouldn't be that good at that.
And you will still have the nice feeling of being contributing to the bitcoin hashing network.
Another advice: when the difficulty will get so high that you will no longer care about the income, switch to solo mining. At least you will still have a chance albeit slim of paying off your investment.
I switched to solo mining with my 335MH usb miner precisely for this reason.
