It is possible. I wish they would send me the same as well it is a good thing. You are lucky if they did it by mistake. So hold it and when they are in exchange you can sell.

What I don't understand it the purpose of the sender of spending gas to send me those tokens... and gas is not exactly cheap these days...

They are normally sent to all Ethereum address with a balance. The same thing goes on with the Waves platform. There are many airdropped tokens on there also. Most are not even worth the transaction fees but sometimes you do get lucky and receive one that is valuable.
