Title: How important is the internet connection
Post by: luxel on January 13, 2018, 04:38:57 PM
Hello,

I am currently making my first mining rig from some old pc parts and some videocards.

But my question is, how important is the internet connectin while mining some coins.

I have 2 options:
1: I can use a wifi connection (I prefer this method if this is good enough)

2: I can use a wired connection, but sometimes i need this cable for other devices, so I can't mine 24/7.

I have no idea if a wifi connection is good enough for mining or not, what are your opinions?

Thanks for your time already :)

The bandwidth requirements for mining are quite low, so that shouldn't be a major issue with recent equipment. (Of course, if your ISP is giving you crap speeds, wired/wireless won't fix it.)

Generally a wired connection will offer decreased latency and be more reliable than wireless. (Do you really not have enough ethernet cables?) Decreased latency may help decrease your proportion of stale shares (I.e. shares where another miner beat you to the punch), and reliability is important for obvious reasons. Whether or not those are significant is for you to judge.
Generally, a good wireless connection will suffice, but I still prefer a wired ethernet connection when possible.

I would just buy another ethernet cable and a switch if you need it.

I tried to connect a wifi adapter for my rig and noticed frequent disconnections from the Internet during the day. I had to manually restart the adapter. In this regard, I abandoned the wifi and connected directly from the router via cable. Think it's the best.

I think this really depends on your hardware and how good the wifi connection is. If you have a stable and strong wifi connection I think there should not be a problem, because normaly the wifi connection is much faster then the internet connection. If your rig is far away from your router it will be better to use a cabled connection even if the cable is 40m long :)

And be carefull with these wifi-usb-sticks. It seams for me, that nowadays a lot of sticks out there are really crappy and often loose connection to the router, it is hard to find some really good ones. Same with some router brands, I bought a lot of new and different models the last year and these didn't worked well. So I switched back to the good old wrt54(gl) with openwrt and ddwrt on them and didn't have any problem :)

But of course if you can easily connect a cable from your router to your rig, choose the cable not the wifi!

5mbs with unlimited cap will support a mining farm larger than your electrical capacity of a typical house.
Even satellite ISPs can suffice for a temporary operation.

I have successfully mined off some shocking internet connections lol

I use a USB modem, works fine until  one of the machines trys to do a windows update or  something then it eats the bandwidth and shuts down all of the miners

I've been using Wifi for my small rig for a long time now without any problems what so ever. Just try and see.

I use ethernet and wifi because if ethernet die can use wifi and also vice versa to fit if mine network unbroken.

Time Warner offers 3mb for $15 a month, that's what I set up in my garage for 10 Rigs, not an issue at all.

Then for the first month till I could set up internet at the warehouse I was running off my phone tethered to a router running DDWRT for 25 rigs, also no issues.

The only issue you will have with slow internet like that is remoting into them.

Same here. The wifi would cut out everyday atleast once and my ping was higher too. Hard wiring is the way to go if you can.

Internet connection is not too important. Just make sure you get a decent wifi dongle because cheap ones tend to be unstable and lose connection every now and then. I've used wifi for a while and it works perfectly.

an ethernet switch will run you about $20 USD, and a cat-6e patch cable about $7-$10 per each 25 feet...  don't be cheap.  the ROI on a switch and some cables is about 4 days of mining.

internet connection does not really matter as long as its a stable connection you can mine off wi-fi with no issues.  Mining takes very little bandwidth. Just get a connection that has 100% uptime and you will be good to go.

When the rig and internet hub are in the same room, I used ethernet.    When I moved the rigs to other rooms, the wifi (in my situation) got flaky.   For those remote locations, powerline internet adapters ($50'ish) worked just fine.    The spec sheet mentions 300' runs max so even if the rig location is in the room next door, you have to consider the copper path from the internet hub to the junction box and then to the room next door...     YMMV
