Title: Two PSUs to run Avalon 7 or 8s? Post by: DPoS2 on January 17, 2018, 02:36:10 PM Hello - I was wondering if it isn't crazy to use two 1000w PSUs to run an Avalon 7 or 8 instead of getting a Sorcerer or a bigger PSU?
That way there would be less load on the PSUs and could run on different circuits as well. The concern would be what if one of the PSUs failed or got turned off while the other was still running (would it damage the unit?) Anyone else tried this out? https://imgur.com/a/7GMxM I had a cheapo china 1600W supply that I toasted. Replaced with Dual 750W dell server supply. Paid $60 for 4 to have spares. Then got some breakout boards from parallelminer. Quality product. Uses 16Ga wires instead of the 18Ga on the other supply. I noticed a half TH/s improvement at the "0" voltage offset after moving from a junk supply to a server grade one. I went from 7.1 TH/s 24hr average to 7.6TH/s 24hr average. Indeed you also have a better chance to get in the sweet spot re efficiency when running PSUs at 50%-70% of max output.

And they are built like a tank compared to the other stuff. Letting them run a few more days before I try voltage offset "1"... Its all on same circuit. Pulling about 10A'ish. I'm a little miner.... Avalons dont regulate power the boards like bitmains miner do so as you increase the input voltage, the output will increase until something on the board pops. The biggie here is that you only hook up 1 PSU to 1 board, I think that's how it is actually shown on the Canaan site for 741 hook up.

You can run them on 1 circuit as long as the circuit is big enough, which all will be if you only have 1 unit. for 110V you can have 1 741 on a 15 amp circuit, or 1 821. 1150w/110v= 10.45A , 1200W/110V= 10.9 If you are going to be running multiple machines I suggest going with 240v circuits. I have been trying for months to get help setting up their new version of AMS. The instructions from their own github are incomplete and I have yet to receive a single answer in their official IRC support channel. That sucks about the Canaan AMS, but you could look into awesome miner, you pay for it but I've heard good things. I myself don't have the problem of managing that large of an operation... mini mine, lol |
