Title: Suggestion: All external link through anonym.to
Post by: stormlighter on August 19, 2013, 08:48:06 PM
Suggestion: All external link through anonym.to

I posted a link using the services http://anonym.to
All of a sudden users started to panic and was afraid I was redirecting to some scam/spam site.

What is http://anonym.to

Quote
The advantages of anonymizing your external links with anonym.to
Webmasters can use this tool to prevent their site from appearing in the server logs of referred pages as referrer. The operators of the referred pages cannot see where their visitors come from any more.
Using the referrer removal service is quite easy:
http://anonym.to/?http://www.gulli.com/ produces an anonymous link to gulli.com which prevents the original site from appearing as a referrer in the logfiles of the referred page.

I already PM'ed theymos about it :)

1. Why do we care about this?
2. Browsers usually don't send referral info from https sites to http sites, anyway.

Why do we want to hide that we are using bitcointalk.org?

It's just a suggestion. If admin doesn't find it relevant, fine by me :)

Why do you trust anonym.to?

The service have been used for years by many torrent trackers. So I would assume it's somewhat safe to use

I understand why torrent trackers would want to use it, because torrent site referrer = likely warez. But how does it apply to bitcointalk?

Browsers do not send referer headers from a SSL site. This is documented in the HTTP spec:

https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2616#section-15.1.3

In other words, this is totally pointless.

AFAIK, browsers do send referrers from https sites to other https sites, though.

I guess if you didn't want a site to know bitcoiners wher lurking.  Then it might be a useful tool.  Perhaps just post a thread talking about the service on the newbie section.  Place something in your sig. Let it be known.  If someone feels it's needed they will use it.
Give one example where we won't want a site knowing bitcointalk's referrer.

Do you trust the owner of anonym.to not to be spying on your referrers?
