Title: My New Closed Mining Case In My Room - any advice, tips , complains or comments
Post by: danielll007 on January 18, 2018, 04:51:05 PM
any advice, tips , complains or comments please

I live with my parents so I did a close case rig in my room

I bought 8 1080 ti.
unfortunate the m.2 to pci-e conntector not working for me so I put one of the cards on my pc and I replaced it with the r9 380

7 x 1080 ti  in the rig
1 * 1080 ti in my pc
1 * 1050 ti on my laptop (I bought it for gaming before I started to mine)

I bought the closed came with very noisy fans so I replaced all the 14 fans with  Noctua NF-A12x15 FLX 12cm 1850RPM,
https://noctua.at/en/nf-a12x15-flx (https://noctua.at/en/nf-a12x15-flx)

and the case also came with 1650W Power supply but it's not enough for 7-8 cards so I added 850w above the case

look at the pictures  ;D

oh yeah I have two windows in my room and I put two  table fans near the windows, one to take air out and one to give me fresh new cold air from outside :)
better than air conditioner

You use too thin fans - they have very (VERY) low air pressure. Buy 25thickness fan (or even 38mm with low RPM LINK (https://www2.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Orion-Fans/OD1238-12LLB/?qs=%2fha2pyFadug8ep6r2jJuZP9yV3uCHOz8b%2fmC6xpO6f0%252bBugKc5zytSCLeQYvSiFm))

And the noise in the bedroom would affect on your health in future (just IMO)

Looking good :)

Can you provide some details about the rig (h/s, watts/h, price)?

How is the noise?  Can you sleep through the noise?

but my fans are 1850 rmp with 72.7 CFM  much better than your OD1238-12LLB

As long as it makes money i bet he can. Just counting $ instead of sheeps  ;D  (but sleeping next so S9s would be completely different story).

@OP nice setup you made there. Have you measured the noise levels? What was you parents reaction to this "mess"? To mining enthusiast it's not a mess but parents never understand that. Mom especially. Right?
I have quite similar setup (cables and cases everywhere).

There are many mining calculator available in online bro. So check one among them to find the best project you can make with the card. Card size, hash power produce from the card, electricity rate in your city all need to check the approximate value.
If you do mine with the simple mining in nano or slushpool you will find the same around you see in the calculator but nice hash will give some more profit for it. Noise will not produce bigger in the mining rig you use it.

Hardwares

price of the case + 1650w power supply  + 14 fans (I replaced all of them) was 650$
each 1080 ti cast to me 1097$ (total 8776$)
to replace of the 14 fans of noctua (low noise and high cfm) cost to me 328$ total
and I also replaced the fan of the psu 1650W for les noisy and better CFM (noctua  14mm 2000rmp give me 102CFM), the old one was noisy and less CFM  cost me 30$
I was idot and bought 8 pci-e Riser  for 26$ each only because only one store in my country sell it for high price and I didn't have time to wait 3 weeks for ebay (I don't live in USA) - total  208$
a 850W psu  cost 220$

total hardwares cost was: 9992$
(this is not include the desktop and laptop, I had them before, just price for the closed case (case, risers,  2* psu , 14 new fans  and 8 * 1080 ti)

I don't live in USA, so the price may be cheaper

Electricity

my mining rig is about 1800W - 2000W (7 * 1080 ti + 14 case fans)
my pc is 350-400W ( 1 * 1080 ti)
my laptop is 150-200W
two tables fans to take out hot air and give me new cooler air  35W each 70W together (better than air conditioner in the that season)

total around 2500W
and I pay 0.15$ for 1 kilowatt-hour
total 295$ per month

I am a web programmer and I made macro/bot for fifa game that make me a lot of fifa coins (the xbox/ps4 game not alt coins ;D)
I run it on my pc and my laptop
I sell them for about 1,000 $ per month so I add it to the income  ;D

well, looks interesting
how are the temps on those gtx1080tis in that closed case? are they boosting at all? I guess this actually a lit bit expensive solution to me
i think just open rig with server 2.4 kw PSU will cost cheaper, but that is just opinion.
I'm glad all is working for you)

About the noise and temperature
it was very very noisy after I bought the case and I could not sleep even with Earplug, So I bought very good fans that not make a lot of noise (23.9 decibel)  and pretty high CFM  (72.7) - Noctua NF A12x15 FLX
and I was  replecing  the psu's fan to NOCTUA NF-A14 industrialPPC-2000 14cm 2000RPM ( 27 decibel and 102 CFM)

thanks to those fan nowdays  the noise level in my room is about 33 decimal 1-3 meters from the mining case, this is not a lot noise
and my gpu are 100% power and I didn't do overclock but I have overclock version (GeForceŽ GTX 1080 Ti Gaming OC BLACK 11G ) http://www.gigabyte.us/Graphics-Card/GV-N108TGAMINGOC-BLACK-11GD#kf (http://www.gigabyte.us/Graphics-Card/GV-N108TGAMINGOC-BLACK-11GD#kf)
all of my gpus are about 70 celsius each

when I was trying to close the windows in room  even if I open my poor air conditioner (very old one 7-8 years old, I need to replace it in any case) my room was hot like a Sauna, so I use two desktop fan , each one near other window , one take air out and one on  ;D and my room in a very good temperature

but unlike Game of Thrones I am afraid from  "summer is coming"

Nowdays I don't play a lot of games, only fifa on my xbox  ;D
About the money, it's depend on the market prices , but I also make 1000$ each month from fifa coins (games coins)  so I can sleep better, even 2-3 days ago when the market was dropping a lot ;D

Don't forgot about electromagnetic radiation, put your mining farm to the plumbic box
And buy air humidifier. You cant buy health for mined coins

thanks for your advices,

What is plumbic box"  ? I didn't find it on google
And about air humidifier I don't need it today , I have two desktop fans that give me a lot of air from outside and take the hot air out, I will check it on the summer.

About electromagnetic radiation I will test it with detector .

Looks good. I'm surprised it's so silent. Is it quieter when the rig is closed?

That sounds great! I think you have the best mining setup around :)

What kind of hash rates do you get with those cards?
Do you mind telling us what kind of coins are you mining?

Very interesting solution, I hope you are happy with it. Temps are always a problem in a closed case but I fully endorse Noctua, it's my favorite fan brand.

--ypsi

Absolutely, the best fans! quiet and high cfm, I also replaced the psu's fan to 140mm to Noctua 2000 rmp,
I can sleep easily, only 33 decimal in my room

Hi - I've been mining for 2 years now and I have never seen a setup like this. Are you using a closed design purely because of the noise or is it also because it looks "neater" or "cleaner"?

The reason I'm asking is because I believe that open air is always better if you can do it, for many reasons. All the obvious ones about ventilation, etc but also because you can see everything and I have often worked out problems because I can actually see that one GPUs fan isn't turning for example, or whatever.

If your problem was noise, did you consider water cooling? I know it's expensive but you can improvise with big systems by using radiators that are meant for small vehicles or motorbikes and irrigation or aquarium pumps. The only thing you get screwed on price for is the blocks that fit your GPUs. It looks like you have spent a lot on the case and all the fans, etc but I guess water cooling would be much more expensive?

I used to mine with AMD R9 290s (same hash-rate for ETH as a 1070 but twice the power consumption) and I had 3 of them that were reference design. AMD's reference design for the R9 290 and 290X used a blower style cooler, and when it's blower/fan was at 70% or more it sounded like a cross between a lawn mower and a dentist drill. I water-cooled those 3 and they were silent and took huge overclocks but stayed at 60 degrees celcius or less. If you can find any affordable way to water-cool I recommend it, but "affordable" often means DIY so it all depends how good you are at making stuff yourself.

I bought the closed came with very noisy fans so I replaced all the 14 fans with  Noctua NF-A12x15 FLX 12cm 1850RPM,
https://noctua.at/en/nf-a12x15-flx (https://noctua.at/en/nf-a12x15-flx)

and the case also came with 1650W Power supply but it's not enough for 7-8 cards so I added 850w above the case

look at the pictures  ;D

We all know heat goes up, so if all is accurate mounted. Put the Case vertical, maybe you could set the fans little lower rpm.
Picture of the Fans @ the Window? Maybe put a plexiglas instead of window, at the top exhaust air, maybe relocate with a hose to the top of the room.
And fresh air relocate to the ground or you build a direct connection to the case.

Send you a PM.

Lots of talk of open air vs closed cases. Just my .02c :

I've found 4u server case layouts with directed airflow and blower style cards run cooler than my open air builds.

This was true when I was running 1070 FE's. It's true now with my Vega rigs.
I even have some 1080 ti dual fan cards that run quite cool in 4u cases.

Forcing cold(er) air across cards and exhausting hot air is very effective.
