Well, generally people don't have clusters. They are expensive! Each rig would probably be 2K-3K Builds with liquid cooling and 8 GPUs.

You can actually fit 6 GPUs per 3U Rack Case. As for the Amps you could surly have more power(64/96/128 Amps), can't you?(I am not experienced in Rackmounts) This could give you about 84 GPUs per cabinet or about 25 GHahes/sec. So right now a 5 cabiner farm can match the totals network hashrate. You mean the limitation of the BackUp/Regulator? Or more about the collocation rates?

I am not a miner!  And I refuse to be called a farmer!  Such occupations are suited for the lower classes!

I like to think of myself as a...

Mathematician!

Transaction Verificational Engineer!

Financial Fraud Detective!

SHA256 Explorer!

Numerical Investigator!

...

I prefer to be considered a man--not an irrational animal nor some label assigned by the collective, but an individual capable of sustaining himself and make it more possible for others to pursue happiness through my work! This work happens to be Bitcoin generation! Let us bask in this not fight over the arbitrary!

I've got 6 gpus (3 cards) in one 4u rackmount case. I water cool, but that's mainly so I can (a) get the most possible out of my cards with overclocking and (b) not have to deal with the awful noise that would be required to air-cool all those cards.

Wait, you don't need collocation in a datacenter. Why not having them home? You can buy a cabinet and really the backup power isn't that relevant. You can get a Freezer grade room cooler and have the room at 5C instead of the normal 21C. Bandwidth isn't really a problem. Just have a basic 4U Opetron 24 GB DDR3-1600 12 TB(RAID 5) server on a home 10Mbps connection and 2U of switches. It would be awesome and a little bit of an overkill. xD

Honestly, why do you need the bandwidth?

Yeah, I mean that, you can buy some rack cabinets and just put them in a small room with the thermostat at negative 10C - positive 5C.(Where you can fit like 4-6 cabinets total and have enough space to operate) Some big freezes/fridges have huge cooling module which basically is this:

+ a second fan cooling the heated side and a wall between the 2 sides. I am quite sure it is enough and efficient enough for your cooling needs. An apart you can get a cheap broadband connection. Just 1 server needs to run the client and the others just submit hashes/plain when they are found and the client submits it as a block. I wonder if there are 3U cases with 8 back slots for putting a fourth card. That would be awesome. This would be a beast; a really big overkill.

This will pull at least 50% more electricity.  For cooling.

I have a better solution.  I am half done rebuilding my bathroom.  In the floor I've put water tubes where the cooling water from my miner will circulate and warm the floor and the room.  A big improvement from the current all electrical floor heating.  I will actually make money form the electricity I use to heat the bathroom.  In the worst case, if my miner don't find another block ever, I still don't use more electricity to heat my bathroom floor than I used earlier.  I can't lose!

Story and pictures will come when I'm done. :-)

Yea 3 GPU's (by GPU I mean 5970) in a 4U case is a possibility. My point though is that since you cannot fit more 24 GPUs/cards in a standard 32amp rack, it's better to have 2 per 4U and have some space between the cards.

I'd love to know the details of your water cooled setup, though.

Here it is, before I put the third card and secondary PSU in. Next time I take it down for work I'll try to remember to snap another pic.

@brocktice guy. Really cool build!

@sturle Well, you would only need enough energy to operate the compressor and fans. However, yes, it uses a bit too much electricity. You plan is really good though. I want to have in my house a 150K USD heater right now. LOL

@vlad I am sure I can jam 4x 5970 in 3U.(14 x 8 GPUS(300 MHashes/each) for a total of 33 GHashes/sec) as of the cooling just install the waterblocks and run the cooling outside the case. I believe there are also res/pump/rad tower combos which are really cool.

Ten years from now, we will struggle to remember a time when houses didn't have bitcoin-based underfloor heating.

Well even then I struggle to find 4U cases with more than 7 holes for pci-e cards.

Yeah, there aren't any on Newegg. However, if you take the metal plates off and make your own to connect the DVI screw to the chassis, like ArtForz has suggested, you could cram in up to seven cards, I suppose. Assuming you found some way to cool them like that.
