Title: Who should we blame for the US govt shutdown
Post by: Nkan25 on January 20, 2018, 05:20:02 PM
I've seen this government shutdown playout since the Clintons. In my opinion, the previous two were caused by Republicans in minority positions. This time I think this is caused by the Democrats in a minority position as well. The issues and the context are different, but I think for the most part this belongs to the Democrats. I hate both parties equally, but all this partisanship drives me crazy. Your thoughts?

Trump, because he has no idea what he wants.

Trump agrees with whatever the last person who spoke to him says, so when he's talking to Schumer, they're close to a deal. Then he talks to Stephen Miller, who talks him out of that deal.

I agree that Trump as the leader still owns part of the blame. I felt that way about Obama and Clinton at the time for not having a compromised agreement. Ultimately, the previous two shutdowns hurt the Republicans.

Either way, both parties are joke and we remain dysfunctional. We need multi-year budgets to invest in our longterm future.

Depends on the ideology. A Democrat is going to be convinced that it's the Republican's fault, and a Republican is going to be convinced that it's the Democrat's fault. Simple as that. Kids.

I agree, ideology is theoretical and its blinding people. Both sides need to compromise and come up with more practical solutions. Partisanship is slowing down policy, while policy can't keep up with new ideas and new technology.

It's not a bug, it's a feature.  ;D

I don't know the exact rules there in the US but this obviously stemmed from withholding the budget. This is the problem when you just have 2 parties, the minority will almost always try to block the majority. The parties becomes antagonistic towards each other.

Trump wanted a compromise on the whole issue, he wanted to finance DACA whiles the Democrat agree on the funding the Wall but the Democrats were not listening and in the end it brought about the shutdown, the democrats choose illegal immigrants over the citizens of the USA.
