Title: Buying bitcoins with Second Life SLL
Post by: jackjack on August 22, 2013, 12:29:08 PM
I made an SL object that allows one to exchange SLL for bitcoins, using the address he provided
It is wonderfully working right now on testnet

I previously asked if there were many Second Life players here and the answer seems to be none
Anyway, I'm looking for testers on mainnet so if by any chance you'd like to test then post here
If something goes bad I'd of course send SLL back

If you're not confortable trying with bitcoins you can test the current testnet implementation, and I'll send your SLL back

virwox has an online exchange doing this.  SLL/Linden-->BTC as well as other virtual game currencies <--> BTC

The market depth only ends up being around 25BTC

There isn't a lot of demand.  But there appears to be some level of demand.

I believe Virwox requires having accounts, going to their site or things like this. Whereas my object only requires right-click -> pay the object -> put your address in the dialog box and the transaction is broadcasted right away.

Yes the market depth is low whereas Virwox has 2 years... Not sure it will ever go up

Just go to Virwox if you want to sell it :)

How do I sell Linden dollars?

Linden Dollars can only be sold on Second Life's LindeX exchange.

You used to be able to sell Linden Dollars to VirWox, and cash out of VirWox in Bitcoins, but Linden Lab shut that down and made everyone go through their own exchange. I'm not sure whether that was for regulatory reasons, to make more money on the exchange fees or to allow them to manipulate the Linden Dollar exchange rate.

I'm pretty sure selling Linden Dollars for Bitcoins (or any other real-world currency) is now against the Linden Lab TOS, even if an individual does it, although I'm not sure how heavily that's policed.

There is quite some people interest in both Second Life and Bitcoin.
Thing is personally I would not trust you with my Lindens. Besides it's not allowed to sell L$ so your account may be blocked.

Virwox is extremely expensive to use, it's basically a ripoff.
Because you can't deposit L$ anymore you need to withdraw to Paypal (can take 5 days). Then deposit Paypal to Virwox, then buy L$ again, then buy BTC, then withdraw.
Most of these actions cost 4% fee so you will end up with a 10-12% loss.

There must be better ways to get bitcoins for L$. Probably withdraw to Paypal, to regular bankaccount, then buy at coinbase or local webservice.

I've been using SL since 2003, and still have one of the early free accounts that earns 50 $L every week. Guess it's better than mining at this point :)

What do you use to determine the exchange rate, and how do you move money between $USD, $L, and BTC?

The point of my object is exactly to make things extremely easy

Exchange rate is bestBuyPrice (http://bit.ly/18MWo7G) * last_all->value (https://data.mtgox.com/api/1/BTCUSD/ticker) at the time of payment
I have a friend who plays a lot and needs L$, so:
  • You send L$ to my object
  • The object sends the funds to his account
  • The object sends the payment data to my server
  • The server gets the rate, calculates the resulting amount of BTC to send, then creates the transaction
  • The transaction data is broadcasted and sent back to the player (needed for testnet and it seems to be a good idea to do)
  • He pays me with fiat when we see each other

As for Linden Labs opinion on it, I'm sure they don't appreciate. But i won't advertise on SL, I don't even write the word Bitcoin anywhere, and the L$ you sent to my object aren't traded for fiat, so I don't think they will react soon.
Even if they do, you'd have received the BTC anyway, so I would be the one screwed.

So, you use MtGox pricing? Um, any chance you could use someone else, or an average of a few? Gox is sorta goxed right now.

Seems that LindenLabs isn't interested in helping me reset my password without answering the security question that I don't remember.  Oh well, I hope I didn't have too much money.
