Title: Avalon 7/8 Cooling
Post by: caxibrema on January 22, 2018, 02:04:02 PM
Does anyone have thoughts on how to cool a avalon 7/8?

For the bitmain antminers I've been using Fan duct shrouds https://www.ebay.com/itm/BITMAIN-Antminer-S7-S9-D3-L3-Fan-Duct-Cooling-Shroud-4-Inch-Vent-US-SELLER/272986906657 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/BITMAIN-Antminer-S7-S9-D3-L3-Fan-Duct-Cooling-Shroud-4-Inch-Vent-US-SELLER/272986906657) + vent tubes https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-4-in-x-8-ft-Louvered-Dryer-Vent-Kit-TD48PVKHD6/203626525 (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-4-in-x-8-ft-Louvered-Dryer-Vent-Kit-TD48PVKHD6/203626525) and they are been working quite well

You cool them by exchanging fresh air in the room. Ducting just adds its own set of problems because most people dont understand how to size it properly so as to not restrict the miners natural cooling ability.

Do some research on how to setup hot/cold isles to properly manage heat.

Do you mind sharing the common problems with ducting? I might be making those mistakes.

I saw something in m/video/2018/01/11/inside-a-bitcoin-mine.html (https://www.c[Suspicious link removed) that might be what you are talking about.

Most people dont size the duct properly for the airflow needed or they do not take into account the length of the duct. Think about it in terms of car exhaust. You have to balance the backpressure properly or the system will suffer. That is why you cant run an engine without headers, nor will it run properly with an exhaust that is sized too small, there is a balance that needs to be achieved. Also people will use inline fans that are not cfm matched to the amount of flow you are trying to create or they wont have enough fresh air in the room to pull through the machines. There are a number of factors that need to be taken into account.

Mind giving some concrete numbers? For the antminer s9 for instance, is 8 feet too long?

It seems the s9 for instance its around 200m3/hr which translates to around 120ft3/min or CFM. Would people generally assume linear growth? e.g. 10 miners ==> 10 * 120 = 1200 CFM?
