Title: I want Physical Bitcoin!
Post by: Mary Laura on January 23, 2018, 04:52:28 AM
:)I don't know if this is possible by any one company or organization, and don't know about what the procedure will be to realize this as well.
But what do you think about the concept of physical bitcoin? I remember hearing a while back about someone who actually did created a few physical bitcoin. But what about in more public approach, I mean, especially for people who actually want to hold bitcoin for long.  :) :)

Hi Mary,

I have thought about the concept of an off grid currency, that is where true decentralization exists, the need to transaction without a massive network/internet. Where if the internet is limited forcefully by governments, or some sort of disaster happens, 2 or more people can transact, without a trace of a transaction or ledger. I couldn't find anything, the Physical bitcoins were basically keys that you can scan and it would be added to your wallet, but you still need the global blockchain, internet to confirm clear anything, and a way to avoid double spends.

But of course the whole crypto community is focused on enslaving us on a global antichrist blockchain.

Casascius physical bitcoins, also called Casascius coins, are physical metal coins created by Bitcoin user Casascius

(Mike Caldwell, Sandy, Utah, USA) and sold until Nov 26, 2013. The problem is, the government has a monopoly on the

creation of Fiat currencies and they will protect that privilege. Some of these coins are still being traded and sold, but more

as a novelty item. {collectors item}  ;D

Yeah, Casascius to me are really the only items that come to mind when people say "physical Bitcoin". They don't actually exist but Casascius have been used to represent the physical image of Bitcoin, even today by most of the mainstream media. There are plenty of other types of coins, but they're all collectibles and only have value within collector circles, as you can imagine. Just have a wade into the Collectible section of this forum: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=217.0

You'll always find Casascius and others there, you'll be surprised by the quality of workmanship on these things. All the physical crypto coins I own (none are Bitcoin unfortunately) have come sellers or distributors from this forum.

There are really some physical bitcoins being created but not totally having the essence that do act as a legal one or really on circulation since those coins are just good for collection. You would able to find most sellers of it here on this forum specially on digital goods section where you would able to find out people selling it out. I have bought some physical bitcoins too but those bronze one. ;D

Physical bitcoins already exists, they were being minted in gold with a size of traditional coin. But this are just for collection or souvenir purposes only. When we use it to transact offline, it can be a decentralized anymore.

Occassionally the old Physical Bitcoins that were created come up for sale in the Auctions section.

Auctions:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=73.0

You can make them yourself really easily, you simply need to find any physical object and attach your Public/Private Key to it. Some make theirs look nice in the form of coins.

Everything you need to know has been said by our fella's here. If you are about to buy one, I've seen some coins out there that has still those fork coins so it's not only bitcoin(physical & virtual) you will get but together with altcoins but the price of course it's adjusted too.

It's not a miracle if you get a physical Bitcoin because this physical Bitcoin still exist in our community, But this is not a available around here, a physical Bitcoin is a highly valuable than any other thing, It has already existed and they are mainly created by gold that's look like our traditional coin. you have to consider that those are really for the purpose of souvenir purpose not for the transaction purpose.

Curious as to how new currencies can be established, printed/minted and issued legally. Bitcoin is legal yes but buying a currency printer from a banknote printer such as for example De La Rue or Oberthur Technologies won't be easy. They will want to see official paperwork from a recognized government.

With governments having an inviolable monopoly over their banknote printing and coin minting operations, how can one legally print or mint a new currency? Privately printing or minting an existing currency is of course unlawful which would fall under counterfeiting laws. But minting a coin which doesn't exist (yet) is not illegal. Or is it?

Or are there laws making it illegal to establish or disseminate a new currency?

I think that you can make your own currency, you won't be recognized by banks etc, but you can definitely start your own token of any kind.

I just don't understand the point though. The whole purpose of bitcoin is that as long as you remember your wallet phrase, you can use it anywhere and transfer it anywhere, and it won't be stolen unless you give your phrase/private key to someone. Doesn't holding physical bitcoin kind of defeat the entire purpose of this? How do you transfer it? How do you protect it?

I remember hearing a while back about someone who actually did created a few physical bitcoin.
As far as I can remember, that was fake or just for fancy. Well, maybe hardware wallet company will create a coin like hardware wallet with bitcoin logo on it in the future. Your thought can be the trigger for it. :)

Yes, there are organization that involve in creating or selling physical bitcoin and OgNasty (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=18321) fans club (https://nastyfans.org/mint) is one and here is his auction thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1637562.0. I think the concept behind the creation of physical bitcoin is to be use as a collection for bitcoiners since bitcoin is virtual currency and can not be held but the physical bitcoin are not the real bitcoin.

I think bitcoin is better off been a digital coin that it is. That was the concept it was created for 'as a digital currency'. But nevertheless, I have heard of and see a physical bitcoin, though I don't have one. Most people believe it will be better off having it when trying to hold for quite a longer term, which might also be good. You can check out in the marketplace section, probably you might see anyone who is willing to sell. Just make sure its the genuine coin.

I think if bitcoin becomes physical then the concept of it being a money online, or digital/virtual currency will be nonsense. I meant no offense on what you like sir or ma'am but this thing we use and we are interested upon is because of the evolving technology and to have our stored online without the concept of getting interference from any third or government party. If it become physical some of it's big advantage would be gone.

This is definitely important, cause now here we are talking about just a funny stuff, such is physical bitcoins. But what about of money psychology? You know, several guys even in early medieval age talked about "good" and "bad" money. And their final state was that bad money wins good money, cause "good money" is an investment itself and/or security tool, like a share for now. Copernic was one of that guys.

So, for my opinion, it is good way to develop virtual money with stable ability to get it in physical way, which may be a silver of gold coin with private key inside.

Decentralized characteristics would really be gone if bitcoin would tend to have a physical form but if this thing would happen it turns out that it is already a centralized stuff because supply can really be extent which those people behind who do support such changes do have the control of it which means its not really decentralized at all. There are coins in the market which symbolize bitcoin but doesn't really act as it should be.

Don't you think it's amazing to have a souvenir in form of a coin which actually really worth over thousands of dollars?
Casascius is the most famous physical bitcoin in the market, it comes in several values:  BTC1, 10, 25, 100 and even BTC1000. You can read it here: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Casascius_physical_bitcoins
It will be more valuable if you store the private key into a gold coin, well Casascius has did that with BTC100 and BTC1000 in gold plated bar. It's really expensive though.

I don't think that would work, because you would need some king of company to produce them, and to guarantee that those physical coins are not forfeited. This is one of the reasons why we have banks, so bitcoin would step back from being a decentralized currency. By being virtual, and relying on the security of the blockchain, you don't need anyone else to do this for you, and that's a key aspect of bitcoin. I don't think a physical version would work.

Once you have physical bitcoin, it is no longer digital and decentralized.
It becomes fiat currency like dollar, pounds and others which are being controlled
and held physically by governments. The idea of bitcoin is to ease transactions across
various geographical divides avoiding laws, regulations, delays and several contriants
posed to fiat currency.

This is a very interesting idea. I feel like it would be very risky to be carrying around one single coin that is worth currently about $11,000 USD. If bitcoin made physical coins I also believe many of altcoins will make them as well. Then people will be carrying around coins instead of money. When you think about it this way we would almost be going back to old roman money where you carry around bags of coins.

I mean this is way beyond what you were talking about. I was just kind of thinking out loud.

I think it's not possible to see Bitcoin physically. Infact not only Bitcoin but all the other crypto currency also. Because they were designed like this. Crypto currency were launched for only virtual transaction. If Bitcoin comes to real then it will lose it's gained trust and also other positiveness. If you see wisely then you will understand if bitcoin comes real then the smooth, fast transaction won't be possible.
So I think Bitcoin is at it's best the way it is now.

I always think that just incase if we have more bitcoins in physical supply this will change the scenario of btc altogether. As  its virtual many people fear with it and do not put their hand in this cypto world. But if its goes in physical form it would be just like another currency which they use in their respective country and this might change the mindset of more users across world and would have a larger market worldwide with this way.

Yeah, the best decision in this case to my mind ))))))  ;)
Every person that dream about physical Bitcoin do not understand really what Bitcoin means and how it works, what the benefits are in digital coins and what they really gets when they have physical Bitcoin. Really even funny. How this physical Bitcoin may raise or fall in price? The price may only be for material that it is made from - metal, paper, plastic, gold or whatever. You may touch it, see it,. But I would prefer to see and to have the real digital currency on my wallet the cost of coins that changes into + )))) Lots of physical things you may find in the shop where you may ask to be made for you with the Bitcoin symbol. But it won't be Bitcoin at all. Bitcoin - it is trading process, it is something that you may feel emotionally when you see positive changes in your wallet. ))) and it decentralised, it is transparent and even safe if you remember and follow all the rules.

oh physical bitcoin in the less precise sense would be a coin with bitcoin logo minted on

in the absolute precise sense the coin would have to also be a hard wallet cointaining 1 bitcoin.

that is not dividable and the hardwallet must be anytime be examinable for validity.

That's not how it works.
Physical Bitcoin private keys are hiden behind the hologram sticker, if you remove the sticker then you know that the private keys are compromised.
Though it doesn't really matter, people who bought Physical wanted because of their collectible value, not the coins stored inside.

Not quite.
Just because it's a one physical Bitcoin, doesn't mean it has to be one bitcoin stored inside.
Most only has a few BTCs stored inside via a private key either engraved on the coin or behind a hologram.

Quote
that is not dividable
Bitcoin is divisible, their physical collectibles are not because it is collectibles.

Anyone can create physical bitcoin - it is not expensive. Just make Google request you will find many sites like this https://www.crownawards.com/StoreFront/PRR.Custom_Coins.cat

But idea is not good and this coins will not have any value, because many physical bitcoins were created before.

That's right than anyone can create his own physical bitcoin, but not all of them are not expensive, there is some physical bitcoin which Manufactured using gold or some expensive materials, then the coin will be too expensive and sometimes can reach 1 bitcoin for just a physical coin, So if the coin will be too expensive and reach 1 btc, then it will be valuable and not like you said.

Will soon, we will have no reality at all  :D. As for me bitcoin will never be physical, due to for this need something like gold or other expensive material or mineral, but the price of bitcoin is very unstable and no one decides to do this attractive but useless thing  ;)

Is not possible to have a physical bitcoin. Is the plain truth. Bitcoin works on a blockchain and its price is determine by market circulation and demand and supply of it. How do you want it physically. Do you mean storing it in a cold wallet? or you mean holding it physical? The former is possible . To store it in cold wallet. But the later seems complicated. I once saw a gold plated caret in a bitcoin form on Amazon for sale. I think you can go for that type if you still want to see your bitcoin physically. Convert your bitcoin to cash, then let a goldsmith mint a gold coin in a form of bitcoin for you. Hope that will help.  ;D

I see no point holding a physical bitcoin, while you can store the digital bitcoin in your safe wallet.
